Accident

Today my husbands brother went home to find that his whole road had been sectioned off. There were police everywhere and he had to be escorted to his house by police officers. His fence had been knocked down, through to next doors and there was a car smashed into the third house down.

There was blood everywhere and clothing in the front garden. The police told him that an elderly woman had lost control of the car. There was a married couple walking on the pavement and they had been hit by the car, the ladies foot had been taken off and the husbands leg broken. They are both in critical conditions, a helicopter ambulance had been to collect them. Evidently they are both likely to die. The driver is absolutely fine.

I am really taken back by this, I feel so upset. Life is so fragile. These people were just walking along the pavement and now they may die. Should elderly people be made to take driving tests?

I think everyone should have regular driving tests, regardless of age. That way people who are unfit to drive for whatever reason will be taken off the road.

That's horrible Claire. I think that may be just around the corner from me. I noticed a road cordoned off and loads of police about.

It is quite worrying when you see a doddery old person getting into a car when they don't even look in control of their walking let alone a car.

Apart from old people though, there are plenty of people out there who are driving without passing a test in the first place or driving without insurance or registering their vehicles.

I agree Rothera, it would hopefully make the roads a lot safer!

Yes it is Maxine, you know which Road. They will probably have an article in the Croydon Advertiser as they came knocking on their door to give an interview.

I hope to hear what happens to that couple.

Just in case anybody is interested. The male pedestrian has died. The lady was not actually his wife, simply another pedestrian, but is too in a critical state.

It's very very sad Claire. You go out one day and you don't come home and the knock on effect is like a mini tsunami (sp?). very very sad. and I mean for everybody, right down to the poor sod who has to scrap parts of the road to the copper who has to inform relations, to the people who witnessed it .... all very very horrible. And as you so rightly say it shows the fragility of life.

... i only came online to visit Delia's site for tips on how to season a frying pan ...
