Anyone live near / visted Edinburgh?

Sorry to start a whole thread about his, and I hope it isn't too cheeky, but I wanted some info.

Four of us want to go to Edinburgh in January (yes, we know it'll be cold). We know what we want to see, but we are having trouble finding somewhere to stay. There are lots of decent hotels in the Edinburgh area, but one of our friends (whose birthday it is and that is reason we are going to on the trip) have their hearts set on staying in a Scottish castle. Problem is, although there are several Castle hotels within 30 miles of the Edinburgh area, they are all either really expensive or get really bad reviews on the holiday travel forums. In fact, most of the expensive one get duff reviews.

Can anyone recommend a Scotish Castle near Edinburgh? Failing that, can anyone recommend a decent hotel?

Fig, I live in Edinburgh but have only stayed in one hotel and that was on my wedding night! It was lovely, very quaint and has a fantastic restaurant attached. http://www.channings.co.uk/index.html

I know The Witchery at the Castle has rooms but I think they will probably be a bit pricey. http://www.thewitchery.com/inner2.html

If you wanted a cottage, you could rent the cottage that is next to Rosslyn Chapel. The film crew stayed there when they filmed The Da Vinci Code. It is part of the Landmark Trust, their website is http://www.lanmarktrust.org.uk It is called Collegehill House.

Sorry I am probably not much help at the moment. but hope the above info will be useful.

Thanks for the info. We'd already looked at Channings, which does look great and we may well end up booking it. The problem was that my friend wanted a castle.

I must admit I like the look of The Witchery. I'll send it on to my friends.
