Facts of life....when??

i had a very interesting discussion at lunct today as to when is the best time to tell a kid about the "facts if life" (even that term sounds so old fashioned now!)

and also is it best to put your 16 year old girl on the pill/ give your son a packet of condoms for his 16th or is that just encouraging them to have sex in the first place???

Many people were of the view that it is definitely wrong to do either of the above as it was just encouraging kids to have sxex for the sake of it,

what do you guys think???

PS - i was told nothing about the FOL by parents, i found out everything through my friends! Sex was NEVER discussed in our house but i formed my own view that it was special and waited til the time was right.

I'd be really interested to know what your views are on this as i was surprised how conserative a lot of people are still about disussing it with their kids.... and also when you were told/learned and how it influenced you!

Facts of life....when??
I learned through PE lessons when all us girls were taken off for lessons on periods and std's. Also through biology lessons when one teacher demonstrated how big and strong a condom was by putting it on the end of a tap and filling it until it became a big balloon and went pop.

When my cousin was around sixteen his mum (a district nurse) gave him a bunch of condoms, she was bright red and mumbled that they were for his or his friends use as they were important and if he or his friends needed more he was to just ask. He said she was more embarressed by it than he was.

I don't know if there is a right age, I think it depends on the individual child, what they have seen, experienced and understand. It therefore makes it a difficult subject with a school setting as it tends to be a blanket approach and if left at home some children may still think that if they pour coca cola in after sex they won't get pregnant (Yes I heard that one when I was at School.

Facts of life....when??
Sex and the likes has always been openly discussed in my family.
My dad gave me "the talk" when i was about 12/13, which is when I was learning about it in school as well. Oh how I giggled...
My uncle used to joke with me that he had bought me some condoms and was going to give them to me on my 16th birthday (but he never did!)
I don't think it's entirely necessary to autimatically give your son condoms or make you daughter take the contraceptive pill as soon as they turn 16 - people don't autimatically go out and start shagging as soon as they come of age do they? Well, most people don't...

Some start a lot earlier than that!

It was the same way in my house....my parents never gave me "the talk."

As for what age is appropriate? I think it all depends...when they start asking more questions about it I think it's a good indicator of maybe having a chat about it. Kids usually know about all that stuff long before the parents realize they do tho i think. lol.

I don't think they should necessarily feel obliged to give them birth control or anything tho....but I also don't think that if they gave it to them that it would be condoning sex. If they're going to have it they're going to have it...

I just think parents should be totally open and honest about it to their children...there's nothing more annoying than a parent trying to avoid the truth when the kid knows that they are doing just that. It's much more healthy just to be open about it..

Facts of life....when??
I got 'the talk' together with my best friend after our mothers had been to a preview of the sex education we were about to have at school. It was delivered by a 'specialist' who was a retired spinster teacher (when spinster really did mean spinster).

My mother told me later that she and most of the mums had wept with silent laughter throughout the whole thing. They did the right thing telling us - some of the girls came away so confused they thought pregnancy resulted from going swimming at the 'wrong time of the month'

I still wouldn't walk through a park after dark with a chap though - apparently it gives them uncontrollable urges.

Facts of life....when??
My son's homework the other night was to make up a game about sex education! Me and my husband were in fits of giggles talking about penises and scrotum but the kids thought we were very childish and remained straight faced. Eeeeee, it weren't like that in my day.

I gave my daughter the facts about 3 or 4 years ago when she was about 10 but never quite managed the dizzy heights of the 3 hour talk my husband managed with my son!
