Free advanced firewall

Intersting info for advanced PC users: Just a "heads up" really. Frustration with the lack of control in ZoneAlarm sent me looking for an alternative. I have come across Jetico Personal Firewall, which has a high level of granularity in all of its filter rules. It can be used by ordinary users, but where it really comes into its own (compared to ZoneAlarm free) is when an advanced user wants more specific control (e.g. over port numbers) than ZoneAlarm allows.

I've only had it installed for a couple of hours but already I'm well impressed. It's a lot more complicated than ZoneAlarm, and harder to learn, but that's to be expected. The help files are very useful and non-patronising.

So if you're a power user looking for an advanced and free software firewall, I strongly recommend Jetico. There's a bit of a learning curve, but well worth it. I'm planning to roll it out to my I.T. clients in future.

Update: fantastic news! You can use this firewall to block access to web images in Outlook messages (an option that was missing from Outlook pre 2002). This overcomes a common spamming technique to check whether or not your email address is "live".

If anyone wants a hand with this, send me a PM.

Probably no one will understand why this makes me so happy! :w00t:

EDITED to add: configurable stateful packet filter!!! Wahoo!!!!

Funny that you should just post this Blinkster as I have just downloaded an update to my ZoneAlarm and its blocking me like billio now. But I have just learnt how to use my new supery doopery digi camera and printer so that's enough input for my little brain today.

Its just popped up that its blocked internet access from a port - what does this mean?

It could mean that someone unauthorised tried to connect to your computer.
