Lord Chief Philips Has Finally Lost His Marbles.

The prisons are over crowded they say. So they shout let me out, let me out.

The prisons are not very nice places to be, We demand, we demand that you improve them at your expense. Red plush curtains, flat satelite TV screen, Hi fi and a pine bed and bedside locker please!

A murderer, rapist, serial fraudster and another vile serial paedophile shouts this is inhuman, to be incarcerated what about out rights, our rights.
The lord chief justice shouts, oh these poor misguided souls need less cruel prison sentences because the prison system is very barbaric and close to our Victorian past.Outdated, outmoded, unfashionable. AH.AH,AH. Oh please do that again. I can take all the pains of the world.:boxing:(Sadly there is no miss whiplash smilie which is probably more appropriate.)

What are we to do was the cry of government, I know lets go lenient, and license the shoplifters to steal more.

What of our serial rapists, let them out to do it again, what about all the murderers, oh shut up, they are reducing the population count which is beneficial to the health service.

We can reduce the prison population lets use police cells to detain them, or better still let them loose on a community service order, after all whilst doing abit of gardening they can be planning which house looks like it would hold the most swag. This would be good for insurers who have fallen on hard times.:mad2:

Better still we could finance a jewellery specialist to make us coded and electronic tags at the tax payers expense, so little Johnny will never stray to far.

But what are we to do about rehabilitation, rehabilitation. Err what exactly is that? Integrating people back into society and work etc, Don't swear now. But that is a bit much isn't it, I thought we'd solved that with the license to re-offend, oh gosh so prison is no longer their part time or full time home. Dearie me.

Whatever shall we the Government do next, I know - I know, of our own we'll give them a cash award of err...what can we afford emm emm....47.00 yes fortyseven pounds. And emm emm what can we afford to pay the foreigners so that they don't come back...emm..emm..2.500.00 err two and half thousand pounds. Mm that should just about do it then.

Problem solved.

The lord chief justice isn't the only one who has lost his f - - - - - - g marbles.

He might be making a good point though. Maybe treating all offenders the same way irrespective of the crime (ie locking them up in a cell) is the wrong way to go about it.

Isn't one sign of a developing society the ability to change the way things are done, if so simply building more and more prisons may not be the best answer.

The problem I have with Lord Philips views is that I feel that truly hardened criminals are being let off the hook, whilst the rest of society pays for these mistakes through taxation.

It also seems a little cavalier just to allow shoplifters, vandels, those guilty of offences against the person, who repeatedly re-offend a license to do so. Tagging doesn't work, community service orders doesn't work, meeting curfew details doesn't work.

In my view if prison doesn't work it must be because they've gone totally soft and lax.

Admittedly some folks really could do with a better start in life, but the system is designed to give the best possible education to offenders in the hope that it will help to rehabilitate. Some prisoners have studied so well at her majesties leisure they have degrees, some have skilled trades, they might never have gained on the outside. There are social help programmes to assist people into self employment, but some people have got to used to the way of life inside and in reality don't want to leave this cosy environment. No bills to pay, no rent, no shopping to do. Its all done for you.

I am not against rehabilitation for those guilty of the vast array of minor offences, but for those guilty of commiting some of the most horrific and gross offences, justice should mean punishents to fit the crime.

Here are a few who in my books got off to lightly;-

Jan 2006 Alan Webster, 40, raped a 12 week old baby in his care and took pictures of the abuse. Tanya French 19,admitted rape and four indecent assaults. Webster got a life sentence with a tariff of six years French got five years, the court of appeal increased Websters sentence to eight years.

April 2006 Lewis Wainwright, 16, smashed a wooden fence post over the head of 44 year old John Wilson, leaving him needing 24 hour care for the rest of his life. The maximum sentence was life instead he got 12 months youth detention.

Sept 2006 Nolan Haworth ,19,admits causing death by dangerous driving after killing junior Doctor Margaret Davidson whislt speeding without insurance or license. The maximum sentence is 14 years, but the sentence passed was 4 years.

The judicial system will also reduce all these terms by one third or more for good behaviour.
