Lunar Standstill

The world's biggest optical illusion takes place tonight at moonrise. It was pretty spectacular last night, but tonight's the main event.

Every year, immediately after the Summer Solstice when the sun is at its highest point of the year in the sky and the full moon at its lowest, the moon appears massive as it rises over the horizon. Last night it was a huge glowing ball, with a wide orange lume, hanging over the hills opposite my house for ages.

But tonight is something really special, because this year our Summer Solstice also coincides near the peak of a 18.6-year cycle of the Moon as it circles slightly eccentrically around Earth. Astronomers call this a “lunar standstill”, which means that the Moon is even lower.

So if I go quiet in about an hour you'll know I'm outside, singing to the glowing moon.

I'm going out with my camera at 11pm. Hope to get some good shots.
It's supposed to be at it's most spectacular at about 11.15pm Smile

The winner says it may be difficult but it is possible; the loser says it may be possible but it is too difficult
:yahoo: He's here!

Depends on where you are, Pats. Don't know about London, but I'm expecting it here in about half an hour and Bob's expecting it up her way at about 11.15.
