Me and technical support

Apologies for starting such an ego-centric thread, but some of you may be interested to know that after years of the possibility staring me in the face, I have now started up my own I.T. business providing technical support, etc. I'll continue to pop in here for free though. Big Grin

I'm mixing this with my legal work for now. Just waiting to see what develops. If you're interested, feel free to follow the link in my signature. Feedback on my website would be most welcome. Smile

Sounds exciting Blink - all the best to you.

PS - and I'm going to reveal my lack of business acumen here - if it's an online service which I suppose it will be, how will you make an income? I mean how will you be able to charge a customer given that most people expect to be able to find a solution for free on the web?

Good luck with your new venture Blinkster, and I too have wondered how you make money from web sites?

However, if I can use some of my special freeby quota I have a poser for you.

My sister lives in a village and has trouble with her internet connection, BT has said they cannot fit broadband as she too far from the nearest connection. They havn't got a second phone line fitted - would that help? Or do you know of any server who specialises in rural village connection (sounds like an 80's pop band that).

The site looks great Blink.

The advice you've given on these forums so readily has been invaluable, and I'm delighted that you're going to try and make some dosh from your skills.

Have you had any bites yet? Best of luck.

Oh yes, I've only just seen the site which has answered my question about charging for services.

By the way Blink if you need any suggestions on ways of modelling system requirements I spent years doing it and can recommend UML as something that users and developers alike find easy to understand - but you may know this anyway.

By the way, what do you have to do to make sure potential customers can find your site among all the others out there?

Thank you Nox. That is a compliment indeed, from you.

Well I've not really advertised yet, but someone I know has indicated that he might like me to come and give his company "the works" - sort out their problems, upgrade where needed, tighten security, etc. It's a pretty big contract, if I get it. We'll see. Given that I haven't stopped practising law yet, I may have to take some annual leave to do such a big job.

Initally I'm aiming small. I'm going down to 4 days a week with my main job, and I'll use the spare day for other things - family time, getting the novel published, starting the new business, etc.

Goodness that takes me back to university days. Actually I don't think I'm liking to be taking on any job so large that I would need any modelling strategies. I may draw some pretty network diagrams, but that's about it!

Not really an issue. The internet will be a very minor advertising method for me. Mainly a place for clients to find out more. That said, I have already organised my site engine submissions.

But I'm not planning to do much work out of my area - I see plenty of need right here. So national/global advertising would possibly result in me working 100 hour days...
