Moving to Surrey

It's possible I may be looking to move house to Surrey in a few months time (probably Ashtead/Epsom/Ewell area). Knowing how some of you live in that area, do you have any advice? For example, which areas are better/worse, what the schools are like, whether I'm going to have to sell the kids into white slavery to be able to afford a 3 bed semi... That kind of thing.

Any and all advice gratefully received! Smile

So can we be nosy ? Is there a reason for the move, or do you just fancy a change.

I'm not perfect, but im so close it scares me

Moving to Surrey
I'm looking to change jobs, and the one I'm moving to is likely to be based in Surrey. We'd been thinking to move house anyway, as it's starting to feel like we're outgrowing our present one, but I'm apprehensive about the difference in price between Kent and Surrey...

Why dont you go on some of the property websites and have a look at the prices around there. Some good ones are http://www.asserta.co.uk and http://www.rightmove.co.uk (i think.)

You can put the area you are interested in, what your budget is, and see what pops up.

Thats what i did when i moved to Suffolk. You can also request house details from the agents too.

Hi Mik

I live in Surrey, quite near to the area(s) you are considering actually. I think that average price for a 3 bed semi in those area's is probably comparable to certain areas in Kent (every county has its nice bits and horrid bits). I think the average price of a 3 bed semi in the areas you mention would be around the £250k-£300k mark - depending on which road /school cachement area etc.

Having said that, I don't know Ashtead that well, but Epsom is very nice! Close to the country (and the racetrack if you like the gee gees) and some bits are very community orientated. And although I can't speak from experience about Ewell, I've heard that its a pleasant enough town.

As to schools - can't help you there I'm afraid. I'm pretty certain that there are schools in those areas that perform well in the league tables (I know cos it affects the price of property), but I couldn't tell you which schools those are as I am childless and consequently fairly uninterested.

SF maybe able to help you further. He's a Surrey chap.

If at first you don't succeed, failure may be your style.

Those two are excellent Bons Smile Unfortunately it doesn't look like I'd be getting much for me money...

Epsom looked a nice place, and it came top in that Channel Four "best place to live" thing a while back (although the same programme placed Ashford [Kent] in number 4, which made me doubt their sanity...) It's also very near to Chessington, which'll be fun for the kids (if bad for the bank balance). But the traffic round that area has been very bad each time I've been there.

Yes, that looks a bit too far our for me. I've heard the A3 gets pretty bad in rush hour too.

I certainly hope so! Wink

Mik - we'll practically be neighbours!

I drive through Epsom on the way down to Portsmouth and we considered moving there but it was just too far out for my husband's work. We did look into schools though and they did have some good ones 10 years ago! Don't know what they're like now.

Anyway, best of luck wherever you end up!
