New Doctor Who announced

The new Dr Who, who will take over from David Tennant is Matt Smith.

At 26, Matt Smith will be the youngest Dr Who ever. He'll appear as the Doctor sometime in 2010. (that year date looks so futuristic to me - it's only next year!)

On the face of it he seems ok. I just hope he doesn't try to play it like David tennant at all - he really needs to make a character of the Dr for himself.

That said - my youngest was nearly in tears- he just loves Dr Who and cant imagine anyone else apart from tennant playing him.

It's going to be weird for me I think. I have never seen Doctor Who when David Tennant hasn't been playing The Doctor, so it will be somebody playing Tennant's part to me!

I'm going to reserve judgement til I see him in action. He *seems* a little young to be able to do the whole old universal time traveller bit, but he may just surprise me.

Digital Spy members have been kicking off already though. I don't get it, how can they possibly judge?

You're not born lazy, it's an acquired skill

I just wish they had got someone more well known for the part. IMO Tennent has been the best Doctor Who and it will be tough to make the part your own after he has done such a good job with it

I think he could be a good choice - but I'll wait until I see him in action - he was good in the Philip Pullman adaptations.

Not sure that a well known actor would be any better - most of the Dr Whos in the past were not all that well known before they took the part.

What's so funny about peace, love and understanding?

I'm not a fan of David Tennant as the Doctor so I am looking forward to seeing what Matt Smith can bring to the role.

I thought David Tennant made a fantastic Doctor, although I really liked Christopher Eccleston too. Both actors played the roles very differently.

I agree with Buzz, this new chap needs to make his "own" doctor out of the role. I hope he doesn't try and mimic any of his predecessors.

I don't agree that this Matt guy is "too young" for the role though. Where is it written that Dr Who needs to be portrayed as a mature character?

I'll reserve judgement until I see him doing the job.

If at first you don't succeed, failure may be your style.
