The Custom House
[Image: CustomHouse.jpg]

Built in the 18 century by James Gandon, this is one of Dublins most magnificent buildings. It was designed to be looked at from all angles and is rich in structural detail.

Of particular interest are the 14 keystone heads which represent the 13 Irish Rivers and the Atlantic Ocean, the cornerstones of Irish trade. Particular interest to whom I wonder?

Dublin Castle

This marvelous fortress was built in 1204 by the dashing King John (a one with ladies history would have us believe, dispite his lisp and unfortunate gait). Though built as a fortress it had diddly squat to do as it was never seriously attacked, only minor scuffles such as the Easter Rising in 1916 where it was attacked by a gang of left wing extremists dressed in egg shaped costumes as they charged over the hill.
It was destroyed by a fire in 1684 and rebuilt so unfortunately very little of the medievil structure is left, what little is left is the staffing toilets where graffiti can still be clearly read
"King John is a scoundral he doth lay with my wife!".

The Four Courts

ZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzz....OOPs sorry wakey wakey. Ahhem!
This marvelous building of intrigue contains the Supreme Court and the High Court of Ireland. It was built by....you've guessed it - our good old friend James Gandon. His wife must have been chuffed to billio with him for winning all this contracts. As usual with our Jim, nothing is simple - no four walls in a square for this high flyer No Sireee - this little beauty was designed as a quadrangel!!
WHY JIMBO, WHY?

Its original use was to just store records and when it was damaged during the 1922 Civil War most of the documents were destroyed, which it is why it is now very hard to trace relatives in Dublin - yeah that and the fact they were always so sploshed they couldn't write their own names.
