Time to release Ronnie Biggs or not?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6930826.stm

He originally got 30 years or something, but only served 15 months after he climbed the wall and spent 35 years on the run.

He then went on to live the high life in Brazil, the only reason he was willing to come back to this country was for the free health care.

He's served probably about 6 yrs in total now.

Make your own mind up - 77 year olds are still subject to the law, no matter how ill they are. Even really ill prisoners don`t get to go home just cos they`re feeling 'poorly'.

I'd let him out - their original sentences were OTT I think, especially with what's dished out nowadays.

Yeah let the old man out. Another example of an OTT sentencing was the Krays, I know they were murderers and nasty pieces of work but again as compared to what happens today and the mediocre slaps on the wrist that are metered out, keeping them in jail until they died seems rather harsh for this day and age. I thought Ronnie Biggs was dying anyway, didnt his son use that as a reason for his release ages ago?

I thought he was dead!

I'd release him, he's hardly a danger to society is he!

Although I have to say the film "Buster" portrayed the Train Robbers as dodgy geezers with hearts of gold - which I don't think was true - they were habitual criminals - still not a reason for such long sentences.

as a point of interest (well to me anyway!!) when I was very young my mum used to say the great train robbers would be getting released when I was 13. In my confused young mind and being as I thoght I was the centre of the universe - I thought they were coming to get me when they got out!! i really used to worry about it!

... i only came online to visit Delia's site for tips on how to season a frying pan ...

When I was in my 20s I worked behind the bar in Norbury, South London, where Charlie Wilson, one of the Great Train Robbers was a regular along with his wife and daughter who was then around 15. A nicer more polite geezer you couldnt hope to meet!

I used to work with Jimmy Hussey's wife, years ago. He was a nice guy as well.

I hear he was very polite when he 'coshed the driver' - said thank you afterwards.

You've heard more than Slipper* of the Yard then - I don't believe the person that hit Mills was ever identified.

*Gosh, that's not our Slipper is it?

In which case he probably politely stood by while someone else coshed him.

and he had nice friends too

Quote:Noye served a 14-year jail sentence for his role in laundering the gold that was stolen in the Brink's-Mat bullion robbery at Heathrow airport in 1983. Police believe part of the proceeds was ploughed into drugs trafficking. Some of the money was used by Charlie Wilson, the great train robber, to finance drug shipments from Spain.

Sorry but there is really no such thing as a gentleman crook... in one way or another other innocent peoples lives are affected.

That's not to say that Ronnie no longer presents a threat per se but please do not be fooled by thier appearances.

The ironic thing about life is that no one gets out alive...Huh
