Why don't people READ anymore?

Whenever I get on a bus or a train, I notice something which is becoming more and more apparant with every passing year.

People just don't read anymore.

Now, by READING I don't mean thumbing through some trashy, God-awful "Britney's New Man - exclusive pics inside!" moron vomit - 'cos that is NOT reading. I mean an actual BOOK, or hell, even a comic book - something that inspires the mind, causes us to think, to imagine, to laugh and cry. To CARE about what happens next.

And, you know, it just doesn't happen anymore. If people aren't reading gossip mags they're sitting mindlessly tapping away on their ****ing mobile phones. And as the technology improves and more and more people can watch movies on a screen the size of a postage stamp (WHAT IS THE POINT, people?!), the noble art of actually reading something will be even more forgotten.

You know, I'm trying to write this without sounding like some elitist snob (for once), but Christ, I know people that have NEVER even read a book outside of school. It just seems.. pointless to them. I had a chat with a guy a few months ago about Catcher In The Rye, and I offered to lend it to him (even stressing that it wasn't a long book) and he declined, saying he'd never read a book and he'd "wait for the movie." I wish to God I was making that up.

People seem to think that books are boring and "difficult", but they don't have to be. I'm not suggesting settling into the Complete Works of Shakespeare or Stephen Hawkin's latest - but READ, dammit.

Thank-you. You just inspired me to revisit some of my favourite BLFC entries.

Just inspired me to click that link. Shouldn't have bothered. Bottom paragraph gave me a laugh though.

Maybe the reason people they don't read is in case they suddenly become ovecome with the urge to write a 3000 word review on what they've just read.

then get hissy about it :wink2:

This place only "buzzes" when there's a bit of controversy and you're not the only bee in this hive, mister.

i know loads of people who read, and not just trashy chick lit...... personally i like historical fiction - especially about the Crusades, Knights Templar and anything which casts doubt on the Church.......as well as biographies of INTERESTING people who have lived a life (not your Colleen and Wayne Rooneys who are only just out of their teens :glareSmile, I usually carry a book around in my handbag and I can often have more than one book on the go at the same time!

At present I am reading The Tenth Insight by James Redfield, follow up to The Celestine Prophecy, as well as The Secret by Rhonda Byrne and Sarum (fiction) by Edward Rutherford........

my favourite authors are:

Ken Follett
Steve Berry
Bernard Cornwell
Kate Mosse
Wilbur Smith
Jack Whyte
Raymond Khoury

Good for you.

Oh, by the way, you've misquoted Oscar Wilde.
