Windows XP startup problems

My laptop has just decided that all it will do is start up saying that windows did not shut down properly and a bunch of jibberish about safe mode etc. So I have tried each of the options but it just goes to the Windows logo with the blue bar dots going across and then the screen goes blank and nothing happens. Does anyone have any idea what is going on?
