View Full Version : Thoughts on Germaine
Eternity 08-01-2005, 01:14 PM Found this on another site, and it really made me chuckle, so I have to share! (I have deleted any other name references so I won't get shot!)
Lot of young women nowadays have absolutely no clue who Germaine Greer is, so I suppose any way of making them aware who she is and what she stands for is a good thing, if it leads them thinking about wimmin stuff..
that post is way, way too long, all you had to really put was....
Lot of young women nowadays have absolutely no clue
:cool2:
Lyndsay 08-01-2005, 02:35 PM To be honest, I'm not fond of overly strident people, and she's one of them, some things she says make sense, others are patently daft.
Eternity 08-01-2005, 02:38 PM You know something Lyndsay, it's a sad fact that if ever a woman needs to get a point over they have to be strident or no one listens to them.
Think about those who have got us to listen, and you'll see I'm right!
Pandora 08-01-2005, 03:07 PM She's Janet Street Porter's slightly more introverted twin .... Her gobsmacked look when John McCrirrick starts winding them up is so funny. I think only Jeremy Edwards has got him sussed so far in that he just laughs at him. Germaine, Lisa, Caprice and co, get all het up ...... and he revels in the attention and the fact that he has stirred up a hornets nest.
I expected Germaine to be more gobby actually, she seems a bit stunned at the moment.
secrets 08-01-2005, 06:10 PM It's early days yet for comment on my part, she may well make half way or further though.
Dolores 08-01-2005, 07:13 PM To be honest, I'm not fond of overly strident people, and she's one of them, some things she says make sense, others are patently daft.I don't like overly strident people either Lyndsay (loving that phrase btw!). But I think she has mellowed with age and is lot more chilled now. I think 30 years ago she would have come across very very strident.
I like Germaine - so far her and Bez are in my team!
Oh yes and I completely agree with you about the sometimes daft things that she has said in the past!
tonee 08-01-2005, 07:43 PM I like Germaine and her cousin JSP because they are not afraid to be who they are vs the strong pull to conform to the feminine stereotype. Let's hope she flaps her strident wings in BB house.
floopy 08-01-2005, 07:50 PM Well I love her - I love the fact that she does say daft things too, makes her more real, and I don't doubt that she laughs at herself for those things too.
I am really warming to her!
Lyndsay 08-01-2005, 09:24 PM Well I love her - I love the fact that she does say daft things too, makes her more real, and I don't doubt that she laughs at herself for those things too.
I'd like to see her laugh at herself, I'll be watching for it.
Andrea 08-01-2005, 10:51 PM Watching germaine on BB is really interesting.
Her diary room comments on all the other housemates tonight were very insightful.
But she is coming across as someone who would be really interesting to sit down with, bottle of wine open and just have a chat. Chatting about nothing in particular but just chatting.
I am surprised I'm actually liking her.
floopy 09-01-2005, 11:44 AM Agree Andrea, shall we invite her over? :drinking:
I'm liking her too, her diary room comments were certainly astute.
I like here hair too.
Pandora 09-01-2005, 04:26 PM Very intelligent woman, bides her time and takes no prisoners. So much easier on the eye and ear than Janet St Porter - who seemed to be rather John McWotsit like in her efforts to get her opinions across.
Germaine is cool.
Eternity 09-01-2005, 04:33 PM She is definitely one of those people you feel you could sit and just talk to, and feel comfortable with. Age has mellowed our old Germaine, she is a lot wiser and common sensicle (good word!) than in the old days. But back then she was fighting to be heard on what she believed in, and to be honest, she was mostly right on the issues, if not the way she approached them.
I would love to meet up with her, couple of bottles of wine, comfy chairs, and I think an interesting evening in hand.
She has my full backing so far, but she did the moment she walked into the house anyway!
I have always liked Germaine Greer, although quite honestly I have not always agreed with her forthright views and I positively cannot stand the word 'feminism' - but in truth I am a bit of a one [although am loathed to actually say the word] and be associated with the sterotypical feminist i.e. Germaine Greer.
But I think she is cool, wise, groovy, looks good in grey [like me] and funny. I think she has mellowed with age and that suits her just fine - I do think, however, the older you get the more outrageous you can be without too much objection/controversy or backlash!!
And Lyndsay - strident!! I shall make this my word of the week - in fact I want to be a bit strident now!!
Dolores 09-01-2005, 05:27 PM I positively cannot stand the word 'feminism' -
Me either Flip - and I often find that women (like my Sister In Law) who bandy it about like confetti have very few real feminism principles.
I like Germaine alot more now she is older. But I totally support her outrageous comments of her youth - she would have got nowhere by being in the back ground without those forthright views which she wasn't afraid to share. I'm a mouse by comparison and I need a lion to fight my corner for me. So thanks for that Germaine!
I always admire people like Germaine - we need 'em - they are national treasures! ... that's not to say I could spend too much time in their company.
Andrea 09-01-2005, 10:29 PM Agree Andrea, shall we invite her over? :drinking:
We should get her to come to the meet.
christine 10-01-2005, 12:47 PM I also have always liked her, I don't always agree with everything she says, but I love her belief in herself and her thoughtful obsevations. I have read her book, and its true, as others have commented, that she has mellowed with age.
I think she is sitting back and observing her fellow housemates, if she decided to write a book on her experiance in the BB house I would be first in the queue at the bookshop. She handles John very well, if he had behaved to me the way he did to her when she joined him for a cigar, I would have happily strangled him. She has the patience of a saint!
I think she is great - she reminds me of my mum..........
I am torn between her and Bez at the mo!!!!!
