The Lottery thingy. Yes I know it was Saturday night and I don't normally watch it but I was trapped at our local Leisure Centre with 12 yr old grandson who goes to the Roller Disco from 7 til 9. All I can do is sit in the Bar and watch whatever they have on the TV in there.

The guy who presents it gave a big slimey build up to Rod Stewart and all but kissed his feet. Then Rod Stewart tried to sing "Blue Moon". It was absolutely AWFUL! I couldn't help thinking that if he was auditioning for X-Factor they would have told him to stop wasting his time

There was more slime and boot licking afterwards about his "fantastic voice", blah, blah and I just sat there stunned at the insincerity of it all.

Yes, he was good in his day, doing what he did, the rock and pop stuff but why do these has beens then go on to trying to do the classic Sinatra type stuff? It's a trend isn't it - Robbie Williams started it and now Westlife (who also sound terrible). Why can't they just retire? They are living off their former reputation and getting away with it. A bit like "The emperor's new clothes" story. No one has the guts to say "that was terrible mate - you've lost it". Maybe you don't agree? Be interested to hear what you think.

Sorry this is a bit out of date but I forgot about it until I saw something on Richard and Judy this morning about his wife.

OK. Rod has actually been undergoing ops on his throat, I think for tumours, but can't remember full details for sure. That is why he has gone more into crooning these days, he has admitted he can't sing like he used to anymore, and never will be able to again. In fact it was thought he would never sing again.

I think a lot of people admire him for the fact that he is at least trying to make new discs for his fans, he sure as hell doesn't need to financially, and he is the first to admit he isn't what he was, but is doing the best he can.

Oh right. I didn't know that about his throat ops etc. So I guess he gets a sympathy vote then. Do his fans really want this though, I wonder. It's quite sad to see it. I'm sure he would get the same adulation if he just stood there and said a few words, without having to struggle to sing. Maybe I was a bit hard on him in the circumstances but it was pretty painful to watch.

I've seen Rod loads of times in concert, and he is ultimately a performer, it's what he loves to do. He sounds fine when he's miming - all the tweaks have been done, but he should know better than to try to sing live now. Having said that, I know studios screw up and the 'mime to bits' don't always appear as should!

He's the same age as me, and I have had his music through most of my adult life, so would be happy to see him perform however rather than never again - but miming would be preferable for everyone.

Don't feel you were too hard on him Critique, you just didn't know is all! :)

ROD ROCKS! Dont you dare disrespect the old man! I absolutely adore Rod Stewart although he is considered totally naff now. In my younger day (and his) I remember going to see him at Sutton Odeon and 17 year old me was SO impressed as he drank a litre bottle of Southern Comfort on stage. When I hear his gravelly voice it takes me back to those happy days in the 1970s - sad really!!!
