i remember that moment from Trainspotting!!! ;-)

1. Italia 90 all of it!- the first time Ireland ever qualified for the world cup and we got to the quarter finals!!, I was only about nine/ten at the time but the atmosphere was just magic in the country , every kid on the street wore an ireland soccer jeresy, every day ireland played there wasn't a soul on the streets - it was just magic!

2. Ireland reaching the Quarter Finals in Italia 90 - We reached the quarter finals in style, there was a penalty shoot out between ourselves and Romania and it was 4 goals a piece then our goalkeeper made a save for the last shot and we went through!!

3. Saipan – The Roy Keane Saga – The last world cup…..the whole country from 8 to 80 had an opinion whether Mick or Roy was in the wrong!!

4. Premier League 95/96 season – I was about 14 and knew more about soccer during that season that I ever did and why….basically it was the season of Lee Sharpe, Ryan Giggs, Jamie Redknapp even Ireland had a few good looking players – Phill Babb, Gary Kelly, I had stickers of them all over my copy books in school

5. I still remember Steven Roche(Irish cyclist) winning the Tour de France in 87 even though I was about seven….the whole country was excited, dunno why but it has stayed in my memory!

Bruno vs Tyson - 1st time round.....I so didn't want big Frank to get hurt!

England 5 Germany 1 - the weekend that immediately preceded the events of 9/11.......a most surreal week.

Bruno vs Tyson - A brave attempt, and he did us proud - refusing to go down like a sack of spuds in the first 10 seconds of the first round, as so many of Iron Mike's opponents opted to do.

wimbledon - every year.

Norwich winning two premiership matches last year (more to come, hopefully:unsure: )

I was fortunate to have the opportunity to go and experience Wimbledon with my then girlfriend on two occasions), who was issued the tickets (something of a lottery I believe) I have to say it was a little disappointing - partly due to weather conditions. It seems to work better on the telly for me.

However, as my ex-g/f knew one of the Security personnel, we had the privelege of having lunch among all the stars in the Players Lounge (I was frozen in my chair and felt most uncomfortble in the presence of Aranxta Sanchez-Vicario, Goran, & co. - another very surreal experience! Luckily we were only sat opposite some Aussie "unknowns" so it wasn't quite so bad as it could have been. Truthfully I just wanted to get the ****** out of there! (you're not supposed to talk to any of them - very uncomfortable)

Norwich, now that they have Dean Ashton may just improve on their past results. My ex-g/f's brother was an Ipswich fan so I know all about the rivalry with the "Tractor Boys" - and it wouldn't do for them to be promoted, only for yourselves to drop back down.

~1~ Arsenal pipping Liverpool to the Championship in 1988/89......by going to Anfield......last game of the season......and winning 2-1.......in the final minute....Michael Thomas....(I was rubbing my hands at the wonderul prospect of grilling all those Liverpool fans (glory supporters) back at school. Oh, it felt good!

~2~ L.A. Olympics, 1984 - Track and Field. Steve Cram, Steve Ovett, and Seb Coe, all on the same track together, and just failing to achieve a Great Britain Gold, Silver, Bronze in the 800m (I think) I was watching it all unfold from a holiday caravan in Wales in me pj's...

~3~ Manchester United 1 (Norman Whiteside) Everton 0 - 1985 FA Cup Final.
Having beaten the other scousers in the semi-final, we pulled it off as underdogs. Kevin Moran was sent off for a mis-timed tackle on Peter Reid and we were up against it until Whiteside hit that fabulous winner in the dying minutes of extra time. It was all the more sweet a victory when one considers the players that Everton had during that era. Neville Southall, Pat Van den Hauwe, Gary Stevens, Paul Bracewell, Kevin Sheedy, Peter Reid, Graeme Sharp, Trevor Steven, Andy Gray - they were quite a force back in those days.

~4~ Eric Cantona's arrival at Manchester United.
Was having my hair snipped at barber's at the time and I heard the announcement on their radio. I had to ask the Hairdresser if she had heard what I just heard, and when she confirmed, I was doing somersaults and great leaps of joy (inside my mind, of course) and when I got home I had to make sure it was the absolute truth. How he transformed us.....

~5~ Great Britain's men beating the Germans in the mens Hockey Final at the Seoul Olympics (or was it the Barfelona...sorry Barcelona Olympics - I'm sure it Seoul in '88). I never had any fondness for that sport whatsoever, yet I still remember Sean Curly's name to this day......why it's Sean Curly of course!

Bjon Borg in his tight 70's shorts............

Kenny Dalglish playing his 1st game for Liverpool - in fact, I think I still have the newspaper cutting from the Sun the day after, packed up in a junk box!

Coventry City winning the FA cup........

Maradona's hand ball (the 80's)........

and the England 5 - Germany 1 game - mind you, anyone who ever works at my old firm will be unable to forget that, the MD had a pic of the scoreboard blown up to Poster size and its on the main notice board as you walk into the offices!!!!

Maradona's hand ball (the 80's)........

....I have many of those junk boxes full of cuttings myself!! - too many really...

I remeber the '87 final well - Keith Houchen's diving header. I've not seen a goal scored in that way for a while now. And of course Mabbutt's own goal. Such rotten luck! My best friend was a Spurs fan, so again, it meant more grilling to be done.....

Maradona's handball.......no, don't seem to rememb......ohhh yes...:)....such a swine he was, as I idolised him at every break-time in middle school.

~ein~ Winning the Primary Schools Cup Final with my team-mates 3-2. It meant we had achieved the double, as we already had the league sewn up. It was the first time in two decades that our school had won a trophy at all. We were quite a special team, coached by a very special teacher (he was a real character of a man - looked every bit the image of Santa Claus, with his fluffy grey-white beard, fluffy grey-white hair, and diminutive stature, and pipe-in-mouth, to boot) - we all adored him, and him us). It felt good knowing that we weren't the only ones with tears running down our cheeks at the end of the match. I could swear I saw a tear or two trickle down our coach's too. Some of our players managed to go on and play for the youth teams of professional clubs, such as Manchester City, and Crewe. They never did make the grade though. I never got the opportunity myself, as much as I wanted it so badly. And some of us went on to play for other schools and teams together. Great memories that I'll take to the grave with me.

~zwei~ Watching Great Britain's 4 by 100m relay team pip the USA to Gold last summer. It was breathtaking, and I really thought the American's had stolen it from us at the last. Well done guys - it was thrilling stuff.

~drei~ Being allowed to stay up late to watch all the big boxing fights back in the early-mid 80's. It was a wonderful era in pugilism, with great names like Roberto Duran, Sugar Ray Robinson, Sugar Ray Leonard, "Marvellous" Marvin Hagler, Barry McGuigan, an emerging Mike Tyson (and boy, how he emerged!..) and not forgetting our own loveable Frank Bruno. It may have been a struggle to keep the eyelids from dropping at 4am in the mornings but it was great to be up with dad, as he turned the fire back on while the build-ups unfolded (the build-ups were often better than the bouts themselves - "Frooooooommmmm The Hiltonnnnnnn, Laaaaaaaaaaas Vegaaaaaasssss, I present to you in the red corner, weighing in at........." etc etc)....those emcee's certainly knew how to get your adrenalin pumped! (it's quite possible that being so dedicated to getting myself out of bed at 3am on the odd occasions is the main contributary reason why I am such a nightowl today.....)

~vier~ Brighton missing out in the Divivion One Play-Off Final to Reading, in the early 90's. They were my second team back then (still are really) and I was gutted that they would not get the opportunity to play Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal & Co. I think they would have built up a team good enough to have remained in the Premiership (for a while anyway) and wouldn't have been just your average yo-yo team. However they lost, and from that point on they went on a gradual decline and ended up in the 3rd Division, which was very sad. Good to see them back in Division One again though. If only Bobby Zamora would come back....

~funf (hope that's spelt correctly...)~ Hearing that commentary by the Norwegian pundit when Norway somehow beat England in an International. It's one of the funniest things I've ever listened to....."Mag-eee Thetcha!!......Nee-yul Kinnuck!!........Rich-urd Bran-sun!!........No-wel Edmondz!!......are you lee-senning??.....No-wel Edmondz??......are you lee-senning???......your boys took one hell of a beating!!!" - wonderful stuff!
