Hi, hopefully this will interest a few...

I'd like to know:

Do you take Mulitvitamins or food suppliments?
Which ones?
What purpose are they supposed to perform?
Do you think they work?

Previous advice from a doctor is that taking Multivitamins whilst eating a balanced diet is a waste of both time and money as they come out in your poo. The back of Vitamin containers convince you that they help various parts of your body.

A question I ask myself is "what is a balanced diet anyway?" Personally, I eat 3 meals a day, I sometimes snack in between, I usually eat veg at night but usually forget to eat fruit during the day. On average I definately don't eat 5 portions of fruit/veg a day. Does this mean Multivitamins will help a person like me?

I take:
Cod liver oil tablets (to prevent Arthiritis when Im older)
Calcia tablets- supposed to help maintain strong healthy bones and a healthy body, contains Vit D, C, B1, B2, B6, B12, calcium and iron.
Zinc tablets- to give me energy and for healthy skin

I don't know what changes I see in myself, I'd like to think that in the future, I will have better joints, health and skin than the average person my age but am I just wasting my money?

I just take one Sanatogen Gold a day.

Makes me feel slightly better about the rubbish I eat.

Claire - I often wonder whether vitamin supplements work?? I don't take them as a rule, neither do any of the family. However, I generally have those fizzy vitamin C tablets in the medicine cabinet - and find that if any of us get a cold they do seem to help us feel a little better and a little less lousy.

We do have a pretty good daily diet - and I would say that we all do get at the very least our 5 protions of fruit and/or veg, quite often much more. So I suppose I think why waste my money on them when I can spend it on food instead?

I sometimes take a course of cod liver oil tablets at the onset of winter as I find this helps fight off colds....but all the others....nope don't bother!

Don't bother myself.....only time I use them is if the kids have been ill and then I give them Minadex to kick start their appetites.

I take 1,000 mil of Vit C every day (fizzy tablets) and I swear by them as I rarely, if ever, get colds, even when my colleagues are coughing and spluttering around me. I also take cod liver oil (makes your joints supple and my skin is really baby soft).

Who really eats a “balanced diet” these days, especially if you are young - take aways, snatched sandwiches at desks and depleted vitamins in your body by drinking and smoking and stress.

Yes I would say vitamins are v important.

Vit D in the winter, dunno if it helps.

Glucosamine all year round...I swear by it, fantastic for relieving arthritis in humans and animals,my dodgy knees have never had it so good, and my eldest kitty and Silver have improved amazingly after being on this wonderstuff.

I take this as well Marmy. I suffer with arthritis in my ankles, wrists and hips and before taking this i was at the doctors LOADS and had a lot of time off work with swollen ankles that were impossible to walk on. Since taking Glucosamine i have been fighting fit and raring to go, and *touch wood* havent had any problems since.

I also take a multi vitamin with iron, and omega 3 fish oils.

You see Im only 23 but I heard if you take Cod liver oil tablets, that it prevents arthiritis later on in life. Do you think I should take those too?

Well, put it this way Claire, have you ever seen an arthritic cod? I rest my case.

I take multi-vits with iron, because at this crazy time in life I just don't have the time to prepare healthy food.

I take cod liver oil, because I am probably wrecking my hands playing percussion, and I think the cod liver oil has a useful placebo effect.

I started taking cod liver oil about 25 years ago at about your age. My sister who is four years younger than me laughed at me. Now she has the start of arthritis (in the family) and I have absolutely no sign. I rest my case.

I'd pop into chemists' and ask the pharmacist about that .... cant see it being harmful tho.
