4) The Twin Towers fell - 9th September 2001
Remember this one too. At home, hubby had gone for a haircut, for some reason he wasn't at work. And saw it all happening on TV. Just sat watching with my mouth agape as it all unfolded. I have been up one of the towers.
5) Operation Shock and Awe - US against Iraq - 22nd March 2003
I'd be somewhere round here with two kids under 4 so can't really remember exactly.
Bella 25-01-2005, 05:10 PM Good Thread, Coastie!
1. 22nd November 1963 - Kennedy shot.
Wsn't born until 1968 - must ask my parents where they were.
2. The Argentians taking the Falklands - April 1982
Can't really remember where I was, at school or home. One thing I do remember about that though is that one of neighbour's sons was aboard one of the ships and she was sick with worry until he returned.
3. Princess Diana - 31st August 1997
I had just found out I was pregnant and we went to my cousins in the Lake District for the weekend. We got up in the morning and my cousin turned on the TV to get the Lottery numbers, and there on Teletext is huge writing Princess Diana killed in car crash. At first we thought, no but then went to the TV stations and they were all reporting on it. My cousin shouted up to her husband that Diana was dead, his reply.............Good!!! We went to IKEA in Warrington that day.
4. Twin Towers - 9/11
We were at a friends and her sister phoned to say that a plane had crashed into one of the Twin Towers. She turned on the news, by that time the other plane had crashed and there were reports of a plane crashing into the Pentagon. When I got home, I switched on the TV to see the towers crashing to the ground.
5.Operation Shock and Awe - US against Iraq - 22nd March 2003
Can't really remember where exactly, probably at home but the whole thing had been impending for days, so it wasn't really any big surprise.
Here's another two:
Where were you when John Lennon got shot? - 8th December 1980
I remember it being cold and close to Christmas and I got up in the morning and my dad had the radio on and he told me that there was one less Beatle as one had been killed, I thought he had killed a beetle!!
Where were you when Elvis died - 16th August 1977
I don't exactly remember where I was, again probably at home with my parents. I do remember writing about it in my news jotter the next day and drawing a picture of Elvis on stage!!
Edited to say: I like your new avatar, Andrea - very you complete with red hair!!
Coastie 25-01-2005, 05:45 PM Where were you when John Lennon got shot? - 8th December 1980
Gosh erm....would have been at school if it wasn't a weekend...I was 7...I can remember being sad about it because 'Imagine' was my fave song at the time!
Where were you when Elvis died - 16th August 1977
Oh gosh I was 4...seriously can't remember...I know I didn't like him much...oh and I was actually 8 for the Faulklands...eek!
1) Kennedy was shot - 22nd November 1963 - Can't remember. It was too long ago even for me!
2) The Argentinians took the Faulklands - April 1982 Learning to spell 'Falklands' :wink2: I can't remember the specific moment when the Argentinian flag was raised over Stanley, but I do remember reading about it, hearing about it on the news, and talking about it on the train.
3) Princess Diana died - 31st August 1997 Probably asleep because it was a Sunday morning wasn't it? I think I flicked the tv on for no specific reason other than to set the video at about 10.30 and it was being reported on every channel.
4) The Twin Towers fell - 9th September 2001. I was definitely at work, in fact I remember quite specifically that I didn't have much to do and was browsing the this MB when I saw the news which is when I switched on the radio and discovered the awful reality of it.
5) Operation Shock and Awe - US against Iraq - 22nd March 2003 - Asleep again I think. But I remember watching the news avidly that day and for weeks afterwards.
tonee 25-01-2005, 05:57 PM I wasn't born on the day JFK got shot.
I don't remember clearly where I was for any other event (rumblings but not exact where and when) except Diana because I was working in a hospital in London in my nursing days and I broke the news to the staff early (just before 7). Afterwards (a day of disbelief) I remember seeing her picture plastered to a rotating stand in a garage and that summed up for me the absurdity as well as the shock and pervasiveness of it all.
Twin towers I was working in a hospital again and it seemed so surreal.
John Lennon - I heard in the middle of a school exam.
It is funny what is recalled in detail and what is vague.
I tend to shy away from war events because I hate the reality of them.

3. Diana - In my flat, sleeping the sleep of the very drunk - I had no idea till about 6.00pm that evening when my mum rang me.
4. At work in central London, next to a very high office block - it was the most surreal day.
5. Don't really remember this one as I was jetting off to the caribbean to get married - i was probably swathed in chiffon and sparkly stuff :cool2:

3. I was asleep (still in school @ the time) When I woke up I went downstairs and put on the television.....it said that the princess of wales had been confirmed dead. I shouted to mum & dad who was in the kitchen that Diana had died. They told me not to talk so stupid! I said well its on every tv channel and it says shes been killed. They rushed into the room and couldnt believe it! In the village where I live you didnt see anyone outside all day. It was like a ghost town

Woodstock 26-01-2005, 08:21 AM So where were you when:
1) Kennedy was shot - 22nd November 1963
n/a
2) The Argentinians took the Faulklands - April 1982
I was telling me dad I wanted to paint a rainbow effect on my wall rather than have him paste wallpaper over it. "YMCA" was playing on the radio and then some news reports came on declaring that Britain was at war with Argentina. I then asked dad "whose side are we on?....."
3) Princess Diana died - 31st August 1997
I had just arrived home from worky-poo's and noticed the news network had commandeered all channels. Difficult to miss really.
4) The Twin Towers fell - 9th September 2001
I was sat at home playing a football managerial game on the PS when I think I had just lost my 18th consecutive match, and through extreme annoyance I decided to watch "Neighbours" instead. However.......Neighbours wasn't on.....there was a live image of two towers with smoke bellowing out from them. I could immediately tell the broadcast was American 'cos it was that kind of picture that you can get only from America. From that moment on my eyes were glued to the tv set for a further 6-7 days at least. All rather surreal.
5) Operation Shock and Awe - US against Iraq - 22nd March 2
Well, it was kind of like waiting for a live broadcast of a heavyweight boxing bout to begin. Counting down the hours until the Master of Ceremonies grabs the mic and starts proceedings. We knew it was coming, it was a question of when?, and would it be so shocking?, and would it be so awesome?. In fact it was so terrifying and tangible, that I even ducked myself on more than one occasion, as the bombs rained down on Baghdad live on tv.
Suggestion:
Where was you when Boris "Boom-Boom" Becker was diving around on the grass on his way to a first Wimbledon title?
