What are the IT department like where you work?

Mine are quite knwoledgeable but a total pain in the bum to get them to actually do anything - the modern day car mechanics in fact. I ask for a simple thing and I get 16 reasons why it's not that simple. When in fact it really really is that simple but they can't be chuffed to do it themselves.

I have a theory though, that the best IT departments are the ones where the IT staff mess about on the internet playing games all day - the only reason they can get away with it must be beacsue their systems are running themselves and all problems are dealt with.

Share your IT tales here.

Well, I voted What's IT?:w00t:

My own personal IT dept, here at my desk, runs as smoothly as a fully filled up with water, steam iron tackling a crinkly pair of jeans:thumbsup:

I've gone for "What IT Dept?".

Seriously, my company doesn't have one as such. We have a part-time bloke who deals with hardware issues and upgrades to the network, but there is no-one dedicated to any other IT problems.

Its an IT consultancy of only 40 staff, so its pretty much all hands on deck. If something goes wrong and you can't fix it yourself, Plan A is to try and persuade amore knowledgeable colleague to help you out. If that fails, call him something really rude and move to Plan B, which involves you shouting loudly around the office until someone helps you out for the sake of a quiet life.

It seems to work, but its amazing how often Plan B gets invoked.

I am the I.T. department, and frankly, I'm amazing.

I'd go along with that one Blink!

Our IT dept is ok but ya gotta butter them up a lot before they'll do anything slightly above and beyond ... and sometimes (I know some will find it hard to believe) I just can't be arsed to be charming!

However I have done a couple of things which have left the head of IT impressed and he now seems to think I know a lot more than I do, which I don't, so I'm loathe to call him now in case he "finds me out"!!

I had to vote for 'They work like a well-oiled machine' because I work in the IT department.

I voted that too Mink, as Mr B works in an IT dept too, and it brings the pennies home!

I went for the "well-oiled machine" too. My business partner is a genius progammer. I slide all the complicated stuff towards him and he sorts it out in a multi-tasking wizardly fashion. Bless him.

I blush at all the things I used to call the IT Department, now that I am self employed:unsure:

I voted 'they're ok but eat too many doughnuts' because that is our IT department down to a tee

That’s a sign of a good IT department that is it means that it is all working how it should and they have nothing to fix

I voted fix it myself

Our IT Dept have a "Hotline" which is always switched over to answer machine. I asked why this was once, and was told "we are maxed out" - which I think was english for "we are really busy" but I cant be sure.:glare:

Either way, if I come in in a morning and find my pooter is playing up, its easier to try and fix it myself !

Basically our IT Dept is a pile of :pooh: Ohhhhhhh I so wanted to use that new "smiley" !!!:w00t:

We have one guy in I.T. who knows what he is doing...the other far to many to mention...are a waste of time and space and you are better off figuring out your problem without them! :pooh:
