View Full Version : Pancake Day
floopy 08-02-2005, 12:43 PM Hoorah, pancake day. :eat:
Wil you be partaking? What's your favourite topping? Will you buy them ready made or make your own? Do you toss? (.......)
Yeah I know it's a relgious festival and so i shouldnt be taking part, but hey, pancakes rule :w00t: .
I'll be lemon juice and sugar-ing, btw.
Woodstock 08-02-2005, 12:50 PM Some people flip, though I'm a tosser myself......(if ever there was a set-up for somebody.....)
I adore pancakes. I'll take just the eight - maybe ten, with a squeeze of the old Jif Lemon and a sprinkling of sugar, fold it up, more Jif Lemon, followed by another sprinkling of sugar - de-lish.
floopy 08-02-2005, 12:56 PM somebody had to bite, Woody :naughty:
claire 08-02-2005, 01:26 PM Now I've forgotten how to make pancakes. Anybody got an easy recipe for me... one that works, not one that gets all the mixture stuck to the bottom!!
I love pancakes with vanilla ice-cream in the middle, a bit of cinnamon and sugar sprinkled and then some honey or golden syrup over....mmmmmmmm :w00t: all rolled up. My mouth is literally watering, Im a sucker for food!
Cockney 08-02-2005, 01:29 PM as the Tosser said above I love them with sugar and lemon
I make my own and I always toss which makes me a tosser to
I once put to much oil in the pan and when I tossed it the oil ran down the handle on to my hand then the pancake landed on it just to make sure
I have just looked and don't have the scar anymore Which is good
Andrea 08-02-2005, 01:31 PM I'd actually forgotten it was pancake day.
But the other week, Aunt Bessie's pancakes were on offer in Morrisons, so I'll be pulling them out of the freezer later on.
Although my kids don't like them, I love them, with lemon and sugar on.:eat:
Andrea 08-02-2005, 01:34 PM Actually an easy way to have pancakes (well kind of) after a sunday roast, is to eat any left over yorkshire puddings with sugar on, yummy.
We always used to do that as kids. Mum always had to make double the amount of yorkies so we could have them after dinner.
Well I made 23 last night in readiness for today, the boys had 4 each for breakfast and I had 2 and Mr F had one. So that leaves how many for tea??
Claire - just a normal yorkshire pudding batter will suffice, but 1 egg + 4 ozs plain flour + milk - whisk to a fairly sloppy consistency.
Heat a non-stick pan up on quite a high heat, put a teensy bit of butter/oil/marg into the bottom and then chuck a bit of pancake mix in - I always throw my first away - as it is sort of just getting used to the pan and getting the pan to the right temp.
After that only put the teensiest bit of butter in every 3 or 4 pancakes, pour a small amount into the pan, and swill it around as much as you can, allow it to cook for a minute or 2, edge up the edges with a palate knife or fish slice and turn it over, allow the second side to cook for slightly less than the first side, as it is already cooked through - you just need to brown the second side.
I make tons at a time, and freeze them or put them in the fridge for later - and it is so easy just to heat a frying pan up, NO BUTTER needed, and fling them in momentarily to heat them through - or chuck em in the microwave for a few seconds each.
OH and I am a sugar and lemon girl!!
And I neither toss nor flip - I gently turn! I can toss if I want - but they I treat all food with respect and tossing them to the heavens is courting disaster!!!:shocking:
I'd actually forgotten it was pancake day.
That's because miss ils is not here to remind me :(
The boys aren't over fussed and neither am I, so I think we will probably give them a miss this year!
Bella 08-02-2005, 02:38 PM I had forgotten too and it wasn't until Judy from the Tweenies was reading a pancake story that it suddenly dawned on me, so we will be having pancakes for pudding with syrup and bananas!!
Claire - easy peesy pancake recipe:
4 oz (110 g) plain flour
pinch of salt
2 large eggs
7 fl oz (200 ml) milk mixed with 3 fl oz (75 ml) water
2 oz (50 g) butter
Sift flour, break in eggs, whisk, pour in milk a little at time to get the batter, melt butter in pan (see Flip's post) for cooking and you have pancakes. I put the timer on and cook one side for about a minute and the other for about 20/30 secs. I sometimes add a wee bit of bircarbonate of soda and a splodge of sunflower oil, don't ask me why it was in one recipe I had and I still do it sometimes.
Voice of reason 08-02-2005, 02:52 PM I'd actually forgotten it was pancake dayOpps!...and me  Actually my pancakes (well all my cooking actually) are rubbish, you'd be taking your life in your hands to even go near one, so I think we'll wait until himself is here tomorrow night and have them then instead!
claire 08-02-2005, 03:14 PM Thanks for the recipe's ladies, will let you know how I get on... :smartie:
 Am I the only one who buys a pancake mix then?!?!?!?
I DO have the ingrediants to make my own, I just cant be assed!!! Im a bit of a savoury pancake person.......the amount of Festivals where all we have eaten all weekend are crepes doesnt bear thinking about.......
I tend to do cheese, ham and "whatever" for a light snack for lunch at the weekends - Mr Q and the kids adore them......
 Am I the only one who buys a pancake mix then?!?!?!?
No :D
If ever we do have pancakes we always buy the pancake mix.....
Dolores 08-02-2005, 05:05 PM  Am I the only one who buys a pancake mix then?!?!?!?
god lord I should hope so!, although ILS's answer has me disppointed!
I love my food (check out my photos!!) but one thing I can't stand is pancakes, they make me gag  just the smell of them. But cos i am a good mum (sometimes!) I shall make some for my son, who loves them and loves them with syrup - another foodstuffs that makes me gag!

Ceridwen 08-02-2005, 05:17 PM They don't tell you how much mess it makes tho.......
floopy 08-02-2005, 05:18 PM We just had ours and they were yummy :)
Hell it got messy though
Bella 08-02-2005, 05:22 PM They don't tell you how much mess it makes tho.......
That's part of the fun, the two tiddlers helped me, they had a great time! The pancakes were yummy, but boy do I need to sit down now!!
I buy pancake mix, no need to go to all the effort eh? Although I'm not so lazy that I buy them ready made afterall half the fun is tossing them. Up until last pancake day I didn't own a frying pan, I made them in a wok last year (not the same) so I boughtt one for this year and it does them a treat. I like sugar and lemon on mine and also maple syrup
I refused to make them - im such an  witch, but when I asked what Shrove Tuesday meant they couldnt tell me, and then there were the sarky jibes from Lewie about me not doing it because its a "Christian" thing.... so I said I will make them later in the week and gave them Raspberry Brulee (sp?) cheesecake which more than made up for it!

Are you MAD???? Let them pair loose in my clean beautiful kitchen (for those who dont know how bad i am, think Monica in Friends  ) they are not allowed in there unsupervised when I am in "residence", when Im not, well thats a different matter - what I dont know wont hurt me......till I get home and have to clean it all  :wallbash:
Dolores 08-02-2005, 07:29 PM Are (for those who dont know how bad i am, think Monica in Friends  )
well you just never know someone till you know them do you?!
I never had you down as anally challenged Queenie!
Ceridwen 08-02-2005, 07:33 PM Queeenie, I am anal too. *But see Orgasmatron thread.
I throw a fit if the "tea" "coffee" and "sugar" written on the front of my storage jars isn't facing EXACTLY forwards and all the jars equally spaced!!

 my ex flat mate was here at New Year and spent about an hour comparing notes with Mr Q at just how anally retentive i am - something to do with curtains being closed properly, loo rolls on the "right" way round, rugs and mats being "set straight" etc, etc, etc.....
im sure I dont know what they mean.....:glare:
must have lived on my own too long......that or im a complete control freak
BACK On topic........I have actually BOUGHT ready made pancakes and passed them off as mine :naughty:

:shocking: is that not normal behaviour then??????
Andrea 08-02-2005, 09:15 PM I must say that Aunt Bessie doesn't make that good pancakes.
They were quite thick, like American pancakes.
I like them lovely and thin and crispy round the edges.
That'll teach me to try and cheat.

Deadly serious here - how times have changed.
Edited to add i don't usually bother - but, looking in the fridge there are some 'sweet pancakes' that you just heat in the microwave.
With Cornish icecream and strawberries ..... ummmm.
Coastie 10-02-2005, 11:53 AM I forgot.....not that it needs to be pancake day for me to eat pancakes...love em...have had to stop eating them though...I was becoming addicted....not overly healthy
My recipe is far simpler than the others- for 4 pancakes:
Put directly into mixer:
2 eggs
2 table spoons flour
Top up to the 0.5pint mark with milk
1 table spoon oil in the pan
Serve with:
Lemon and sugar
Banana and chocolate
Bacon and sausage
ooh anything really!
I completely missed pancake day this year and didn't even realise it was Shrove Tuesday until I saw this thread. I adore pancakes with oodles of lemon and treacle, but they are a bit of a pain to make. Either you've got to eat them or pass them out as you make them or find some way of keeping them warm until you get a big enough pile.
So, has anyone given anything up for lent?
Voice of reason 10-02-2005, 06:42 PM So, has anyone given anything up for lent?
Yeah, pancakes :bag:
floopy 10-02-2005, 07:11 PM and religion
So, has anyone given anything up for lent?
Swearing - which is odd, cos I don't as a rule, and I couldn't actually remember when Lent started officially - which is shameful when I type out weekly services and reflections, and even take the odd service!?!
