View Full Version : The Brit Awards
Bella 09-02-2005, 12:07 PM You probably know that it is the Brit Awards tonight, but it won't be shown on TV until Thursday - did this used to be live, I seem to remember not knowing who had won until it was actually shown on the night. No doubt the winners will be splashed all over the papers tomorrow.
Who do you want to win: The Nominations (http://brits.co.uk/artists/)
British Male - undecided on this one, although I do quite like The Streets.
British Female - not keen on any of them
British Group - Has to be Franz Ferdinand
British Album - Again, Franz Ferdinand
British Single - George Michael, Amazing
British Breakthough Act - You've guessed it Franz Ferdinand
British Live Act - haven't seen them live but see above!
Brit 25 Best Song Award - Torn between Joy Division and Queen, although Robbie's Angels was fab too.
Pop Act - McFly
International Male Artist - Brian Wilson "they are having a laugh, surely". Only heard of Mr Puppetstrings above, Eninem and Usher and not keen on any really, so not really fussed!
International Female Artist - Anastacia or Kylie
International Group - The one and only Scissor Sisters, although I do quite like Outkast too.
International Album - Scissor Sisters.
International Breakthrough - Scissor Sisters
Andrea 09-02-2005, 12:32 PM Yes, it used to be live, until the Sam Fox and Mick Fleetwood debacle.
I didn't actually see that one, but on hearing about it, I felt quite sorry for them, it wasn't their fault. Apparently there was a 90 year old woman on the autocue that really shouldn't have been.
But anyway, here's my predictions....
Best male solo - I don't think I've heard of any of the Streets stuff, so I don't know for this one, cause the others are all a bit rubbish.
Female solo - Again I'm not a big fan of any of them, but I'll go for Joss Stone
British group - between Franz Ferdinand and Keane.
British Album - again between Franz ferdinand and Keane, can't decide.
British single - Keane, everybody's changing.
British breakthrough - Same as above, between FF and Keane
British Urban - Joss Stone
British Rock - FF
British live - I'd go for FF, I imagine them to be quite good live.
Best song - I'd go for Kate Bush, wuthering heights
Pop - I think, for my sins, I'd have to pick Girls aloud:ninja:
International male - Eminem
International Female - Gwen Stefani
International group, album and breakthrough act all go to the Scissor Sisters.
Just as an aside, I'm off out to Norwich on Sat, and one of the clubs I was looking at on the internet, called the Riverside, had Scissor Sisters play there last year, I wish I'd been there.
Bella 09-02-2005, 12:37 PM Yes, it used to be live, until the Sam Fox and Mick Fleetwood debacle.
Oh I remember that, it was awful!!! I also remember when Jarvis Cocker jumped on stage when Michael Jackson was playing, if I remember wasn't he protesting about Michael Jackson's relationships with children?
The Scissor Sisters are performing at the Brits, I am sure they will be fantastic, something to look forward to on Thursday!
British Male - Will Young
British Female - Jamelia
British Group - Keane
British Album - Hopes and Fears Keane
British Single - Everythings Changing - Keane
British Breakthough Act - Keane (have you spotted the trend here)
British Live Act - Muse
Brit 25 Best Song Award - Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart, I have always loved this!
Pop Act - Dont really "do" pop so I dont know........
International Male Artist - Eminem (not only is he talented but he is as fit as a butchers dog  ).
International Female Artist - Gwen Stefani.
International Group - Scissor Sisters.
International Album - How to dismantle an atomic bomb - U2 OR Scissor Sisters - torn between the 2......
International Breakthrough - Scissor Sisters.
Andrea 09-02-2005, 12:48 PM The Scissor Sisters are performing at the Brits, I am sure they will be fantastic, something to look forward to on Thursday!
Apparently they are opening the show. They always do something big on the opening act, so it should be great.

they are incredible!!!!! I bought the album ages ago and my mates slated me because of the Pink Floyd cover.....I predicted last March that they would be the next big thing, that they would headline all the Festivals and that my mates would soon be buying the album.........fast forward to October last year, and one of those mates says "im going to see the Scissor Sisters at the weekend" so I said, but you slated them, I thought you said they were pants....she denied the whole conversation the blagger!!!!
yeahbutnobutyeahbutnobut - oops wrong show!!
I get annoyed about the Brits - I love love love watching them - but the blinkin press release all the winners and any scandal the day after and before we all get to see the show - so it is not a nail-biting, fun-packed show that it used to be!!
British Male - Will Young (of course)
British Female - Jamelia
British Group - Franz Ferdinand
British Album - Franz Ferdinand
British Single - Will Young - Your Game
British Breakthough Act - Keane
British Live Act - Franz Ferdinand
Brit 25 Best Song Award - Love them all but would have to go for Joy Division Love will tear us apart
Pop Act - Between Girls Aloud and Avril Lavinge
International Male Artist - Usher
International Female Artist - Gwen
International Group - Maroon 5
International Album - Maroon 5
International Breakthrough - Maroon 5
I voted for FF & Maroon 5 because miss ils likes them although she also likes sister sister but it is not really my type of music....
Bonsai 09-02-2005, 03:50 PM I feel old
claire 10-02-2005, 09:12 AM I didn't watch but have it recorded...
Just had a look on the sun website... click on the link ...Didn't everybody look stunning?
http://www.thesun.co.uk/article/0,,2-2005062427,00.html
Dolores 10-02-2005, 09:33 AM I felt this show meant something when the likes of Pulp, Blur and Oasis came on the scene, but now there is too much so called "R&B" music that all sounds the same and is usually over produced.
But the Scissor Sisters are absolutely sensational, one of the best most original bands in years and years and years!
Andrea 10-02-2005, 09:51 AM Isn't Gwen Stefani just brilliant.
Apparently she went up on stage to collect her award with 4 geisha girls.
And I can't wait to see Scissor Sisters in their "eggs":pimp:
Bella 10-02-2005, 10:05 AM I am delighted that the Scissor Sisters cleaned up, they are amazing! They were playing in Edinburgh at New Year but it was way too cold to stand out and watch them but from all accounts they were fantastic. I would love to see them next time they hit town though, preferably indoors!!
And Franz - 2 awards, well done!! They are simply amazing too. The pop industry is full of manufactured bands by the likes of Waterman, Cowell, so when bands like this make it, it makes a nice change! Looking forward to watching it on the box tonight though!

I agree with you 20000000%. I used to love it when bands were different and edgy. Now they all look and dance identically. I mean, how many boy bands can we possibly have on this planet ????? And they dont have longevity (sp). They only release 1-2 songs and then dissapear.
Well, I thought I'd give the Brit awards another try. I haven't watched it much since the days of the first wave of Britpop. There is only so much Robbie, Kylie and Westlife I can stand.
I was pleasantly surprised. Apart from Robbie who I can take or leave, I thought the show was pretty good. None of the prize winners were too far up their own backside and most seemed to accept the award with some degree of grace which was good to see.
I thought the solo artist section was a bit weak compared to the bands who are strong this year, but that's probably because they just weren't to my particular taste.
This killed a couple of hours and it was quite pleasant.
I was pleased Robbie & Will won a brit each for their respective singles... and I thought Chris Evans did a good job as compare!

I agree ils.. Chris Evans did a good job last night. I was MIGHTILY naffed off that that bloody Joss Stone was on stage with Robbie though. :ranting: I cannot stand that child - for thats all she is. I'll  now
Bella 11-02-2005, 07:22 AM Yes, it was good to see Chris Evans back, he did do a really good job. I let Katie stay up and watch a little of it as we are on holiday today. She loved the Scissor Sisters, their act was just brilliant and they thoroughly deserved their awards. Franz Ferdinand were fantastic too. In fact I loved all the bands, was hugely disappointed with Daniel & Natasha Bedingfield, they destroyed one of my favourite songs as did Lemahr and Jamelia.
Buzz, I really enjoyed Joss Stone with Robbie, loved Robbie's comment about the media getting a dig at him. Good on him for winning his award, they can slate him but he has stood the test of time and I reckon he is going to be around for a good time yet!
Dolores 11-02-2005, 07:48 AM I enjoyed the Scissors Sisters, I'm also a big big fan of Chris Evans - I've always thought he was fabulous, but as soon as that gurning idiot came into camera shot I had to turn off. So that was the end of my Brit Fest - thanks Robbie! you little :pooh:
I loved every second of it!!!!!
Great to see Chris Evans back.......
I felt that Jamelia and Lemar were the best double act of the evening....... they made such a striking couple - so cool and sexy......she is GORGE isnt she!!!!!
I love Joss Stones singing voice, but she gets on my nerves the rest of the time, Im sure she will grow on me as she gets older - I keep forgetting she is only 17!!!!
I thought that Keane played a blinder - I cant WAIT to go and see them ....they deserve it, they are very talented, the same goes for Muse and Franz Ferdinand...... and I was impressed as usual with the Scissor Sisters.....
It makes such a refreshing change to have talented singers/songwriters and musicians PLAYING LIVE instead of manufactured pop drivel.......
and finally......... I think I may just fancy Snoop  :naughty: hes sooooo :pimp: COOOOOL!!!!!!
The highlight of the show for me was Natasha and Daniel Bedingfield - the duo they did was sensational, gosse-bumpingly awe inspiring - I LOVED IT!!
I also loved the bit where Chris Evans asked Billie Piper out for a bag of chips afterwards and she replied she was busy!! Was that Gazza she was with???

We turned over at 8.30 to watch Cheffy - so didnt see Natasha and Daniel doing their bit.....
It certainly was Gazza Flip!!!!
It certainly was Gazza Flip!!!!
:shocking: is there a relationship there then??
[QUOTE=Flip]:shocking: is there a relationship there then??[/QUOTE
Noooooo!!!!! he is one of Chris Evans bessie mates, Im sure I read somewhere (OK probably) that Chris Evans has taken Gazza in as "lodger"........
So are Chris & Billy back on?
Bella 11-02-2005, 09:00 AM So are Chris & Billy back on?
It would be nice if they were, even though there was an age gap, I thought they made a lovely couple.
Isn't in interesting that we all loved and hated different bits? I thought Daniel & Natasha were really really bad, I like Daniel as a solo artist but I jsut haven't taken to Natasha. And I agree that Lemahr and Jamelia looked sooooo good together, I guess I am still living in a time warp and loved the original when Robert Palmer  sung it! I thought Robbie done okay this time, he usually waffles a load of :pooh:, but he kept it short and to the point. And the duo with Joss Stone was brilliant, there was a real chemistry there. The thing I liked about Joss Stone, is that yeah she is only 17 but she isn't one of the skinny manufactured, pretty poppy girls, she has a curvy figure and looks great with it. The Scissor Sisters still stole the show for me though, even their speeches were fab. And you know what else I liked about the award winners, is that none of them were linked to the screaming teeny boppers, none of them were your pretty boys from pop, in fact there were a few of the winners that looked very geekish, but talented geeks!!! :w00t:
Andrea 11-02-2005, 01:41 PM I can't believe I missed this, I was out last night:sad:
I hope they repeat it on itv2 over the weekend.

well they repeat everything else on ITV2 Andrea!!!!
Bonsai 11-02-2005, 02:44 PM I watched this last night, and almost enjoyed myself
I like Natasha and Daniel Beddingfield. Im not fans of either of them, but i thought they did the song justice.
I was dissapointed in 'The Streets'. I adore that song, but the live version was a bit pants.
Scissor Sisters were FABBY. I got their CD for Xmas and havent stopped playing it since. I was really chuffed that they won loads of awards.
Im not a fan of Robbie either, but i liked his duet with Joss Stone ... although she irritates me.
Gwen Staffani (sp) was brilliant. How she stays vertical in those shoes is beyond me. I wish she would get rid of the sickly girls though.
Pandora 11-02-2005, 05:22 PM The Brits were terrific, and only spoilt a little bit by the fact that the arrogant gurning chimp Robbie was present and that they gave Bob Geldolf an award for his "Outstanding Contribution To Music"..... Huh?????????? He was in possibly the worst "punk" band of all time - liked only by school kids and roundly criticised and loathed by real punks and the punk bands of that time, and he has had ONE top 20 hit since then !!!
He cant have been given the award for BandAid, as that was a collaboration of four other musicians, including Midge Ure, and I didnt see them going up to collect an award.
I agree about the Scissor Sisters - totally brilliant, but when Bob came on, I switched off.
Voice of reason 11-02-2005, 05:29 PM I didn't watch it (loathe awards ceremonies (?sp)) but agree with Bonnie about Joss Stone, she irritates me as well. She's 17 and from Devon, so why has she got an American accent?????
Oh I knew there was a question I needed to ask and even more than that NEED an answer to.
In the catorgory for Best Solo Male artist - not only were The Streets nominated - but they won?????
How come??

I didn't understand that either Flip ..........

....must have picked it up from the tourists.....

The Streets consist of one man, so my niece tells me.
The Streets consist of one man, so my niece tells me.
Well there were 2 men singing (if that's what you could call it) on stage last night!
Pandora 11-02-2005, 06:20 PM I enjoyed the Scissors Sisters, I'm also a big big fan of Chris Evans - I've always thought he was fabulous, but as soon as that gurning idiot came into camera shot I had to turn off. So that was the end of my Brit Fest - thanks Robbie! you little :pooh: Think we are in a minority here Dol, but I cant stand Robbie either. I read his autobiography, Feel, thinking that if I knew more about him, I might like him more. Nope. He comes across as an insecure diva, with a foul mouth, who talks to people like they are rubbish. He is vain, fickle, arrogant and says he isnt happy with all the money he has. Why not give it all away and get a different job then Rob? Please.
Saying all that, I DO like his songs, though I think he is missing the input of Guy Chambers if recent efforts are anything to go by. The award for Angels was deserved. Just a pity we had to look at him and hear him spouting his usual load of arrogant piffle when he accepted it.
Pandora 11-02-2005, 06:24 PM Well there were 2 men singing (if that's what you could call it) on stage last night! Well my niece is sticking to her guns. She thinks Im an old fogey anyway so I darent contradict her lol ........... I have to say Im not a big fan of The Streets, whether they be one man or a duo .... hated that single of theirs, it was such a dirge.
I didn't like any of the duets much. Daniel BeddingCentre annoys the heck out of me so he was onto a loser from the start. Lemar and Jamelia were ok but didn't do the song justice IMO. And what has Jamelia done?
As far as Robbie and Joss were concerned, at least Joss made an effort whereas it all seemed too much bother for Robbie. And personally I've seen more chemistry between a couple of fruit flies than between those two.
Well my niece is sticking to her guns. She thinks Im an old fogey anyway so I darent contradict her lol ........... I have to say Im not a big fan of The Streets, whether they be one man or a duo .... hated that single of theirs, it was such a dirge.
Well they must be classed as one man as they won the 'Best solo artist' but there were definitely 2 of them.....
One was coloured and one was white! one sang and one spoke!

She's 17 and from Devon, so why has she got an American accent?????
Mr Q said pretty much the same thing last night Voicey, only not quite as politely as you
Voice of reason 11-02-2005, 08:23 PM Apparently Robbie was originally meant to duet with Morrissy (the mind boggles) but M snubbed the Robster so he had to sing with JS instead, perhaps that's why he looked unenthusiastic.
Andrea 11-02-2005, 08:32 PM From the official brit site about "The Streets"..
Mike Skinner grew up in Birmingham and North London. From the ages of 15 to 19 he worked to finance his forays into garage/ 2 step music, and by 20 had released a first single, Has It Come To This, on Locked On records – home at the time to Artful Dodger and Craig David. March 2002 saw the release of a debut album, Original Pirate Material. Its social-savvy themes and clever rhymes marked it out from the rest of party-heavy UK garage/ r&b enough to ensure a US release and it sold over a million copies worldwide. Skinner’s follow-up album, A Grand Don’t Come For Free (May 2004), has so far generated two singles - Fit But You Know It (April 2004), and Blinded By The Lights (Sept 2004).
So it looks like it is one guy.
And I've seen the show is going to be repeated on itv2 on Sunday at 11.15. Don't think I'll be watching the whole thing but at least I can see the opening with the Scissor Sisters which is really all I wanted to see.
Andrea I believe you and Pan you'd better believe your neiece - but I can count and so can ils - and there were defo two guys singing - and numerous amounts playing instruments - and another thing if you are one person how can you be called The Streets - ok I know I am The Flipster, but I am not proclaiming to be a nominee of Solo Artist - and secondly I am not known as the The Flipsters - which indicates numerous peeps!
So it is all a load of young un-understandable rubbish to me!!
Voice of reason 12-02-2005, 03:16 PM Perhaps the other bloke was his backing singer!
Perhaps the other bloke was his backing singer!
Well if he was he hogged the limelight Voice - they stood like a duo, and the camera flimed them like a duo!
I thought that The Streets was just Mike Skinner......so I was a little confused when there appeared to be loads of them! Seems a bit unfair if there are loads of them, to be in an "individuals" category......
