Minnie Driver - Everything I’ve Got In My Pocket (EMI Liberty)

I got this CD after hearing her sing on Jonothan Ross. She has the most amazing voice. Its quite a mellow record but very relaxing and quite beautiful. Perfect ending to a stressful day. I don't think it's everybody's cup of tea but anybody else have it or heard her sing? What do you think?

SOME acid-penned brethren have chosen to rubbish this debut from the Hollywood actress out of hand, which probably says more about them than it does about Minnie Driver.

Fact is that while it is unlikely to change the world, this is an honest piece of work with a style of its own – a dreamy combination of laid-back alt-country and a Bristolian sprinkling of strings and electronica.

Driver can most definitely sing, and her relaxed delivery suits the laid-back mood and the wistful, intelligent lyrics.

Features an unexpectedly slow version of Springsteen’s Hungry Heart.

It’s hard not to approach a musical endeavour by a Hollywood star with a healthy dose of skepticism. But, upon a first listen to this debut by the award-winning English actress, one’s skepticism is thrown out the window and rapidly replaced with respect and admiration for the soulful songwriter.

Boasting 10 original songs, along with one cover, Everything I’ve Got in My Pocket showcases another side of the acclaimed actress. What many aren’t aware of is that Driver — best known for her roles in movies such as Good Will Hunting and Grosse Pointe Blank — began singing in London’s jazz clubs as a teenager before her acting took her career in a different direction.

Here, Driver covers Bruce Springsteen’s “Hungry Heart” and gives it a haunting, piano reworking, as each syllable drips off her lips with heartfelt emotion. The title track kicks off the disc with a lilting song of comfort. “Invisible Girl” showcases Driver’s deftness with creating lasting images with her lyrics such as this song’s chorus: “Heart shines like a neon sign/ For tonight won’t you just be mine/ Invisible girl, in the sodium light/ She’s the Queen of the night.” Other highlights include the sombre “Deeper Water” and the folk, pop infused “Down.”

Sporting a seductive, angelic voice that is reminiscent of the styles of Sarah McLachlan, Dido, the Cowboy Junkies’ Margo Timmins and Eleni Mandell, Driver delicately weaves her way through songs about love that avoid clichés through original metaphors.
