floopy 21-02-2005, 02:24 PM I voted Paris, cos I work in Stratford and although the area needs rejuvenation, I dont think this is the way forward.
If it is to be held in the UK, I'd prefer it to be in Birmingham or Manchester, somewhere central that can cope with all the extra visitors. London's kinda full enough already.
Bella 21-02-2005, 02:52 PM As long as it is not New York!! America have had it far too many times, let someone else have a chance!
I think it would be great to have it in London, but like Floopy I do hope that they hand it out round the country.
I would like it to be held in London .....
tonee 21-02-2005, 04:45 PM I have to say I am a London fan too.
maxine 21-02-2005, 04:53 PM I reckon Paris - I just don't think London's transport system could cope.
tigger 21-02-2005, 05:27 PM Being an East Londoner myself, and being in one of the boroughs that pays some of the highest Council tax already, I don't want it here, as we have been told that our Council tax will rise significantly if it were so. I don't have a problem otherwise. Let the hefty rise that Ken Livingstone is putting on the congestion charge, pay for it. :glare:
floopy 21-02-2005, 05:30 PM here here.
And doubtless if the olympics did end up in London, the congestion charge would be extended to all of greater London because of it
Woodstock 21-02-2005, 07:41 PM I had to opt for New Yoik, simply from an "tv viewing entertainment" perspective. The Americans do razzmatazz extremely well (opening/closing ceremonies etc) It makes me cringe slightly at the thought of what our own choreographic masterminds would come up with. And the ceremonies are what make the Olympics for me............along with track & field, swimming, and some of the other water-based sports. If they're not convincing it spoils the entire show, Sydney was perfect, and even Athens did the biz - but London?? no I'd very surprised if they could pull it off......it'd take more than just a clever fireworks display I'm afraid......
If New Yoik, don't gayt it, den.......Paris must. (I adore the city)
Andrea 22-02-2005, 01:00 PM I have a sneaky suspicion that New York will get it.
In a kind of rememberance of the twin towers.
Myself, I think it would be great for it to be in London, but I do agree with what everyone from London has said, in that they will be paying for it.
So I say, give it to Paris.
Coastie 27-02-2005, 05:26 PM I voted London but I think Manchester would have been a better choice for the UK.
Woodstock 12-03-2005, 02:19 PM A new train of thought......the Olympics should be jointly held in Wales & Ireland.....
.....if only....
claire 13-03-2005, 03:59 PM Paris, and I don't know why (this is one of those posts that are a huge contribution to the thread) :wink_kiss
A new train of thought......the Olympics should be jointly held in Wales & Ireland.....
.....if only....
Why?
Dolores 13-03-2005, 05:01 PM I voted New York - cos the time difference suits me! They'd be starting around the time I got home from work!
Woodstock 13-03-2005, 06:20 PM Why?
'cos the Irish are friendly, warm, and welcoming - and it is also a beautiful country. And Wales also, because it too, is a beautiful country and should have its chance to be seen independently from England by the rest of the world. It would be a Gaelic Games, and i think it would be a lovely idea to have them running on both sides of the Irish Sea. Then, rather than just awarding the event sometime in the future, to London, they could span it out and award it jointly to Scotland and England. We're only a wee island (not much bigger than New York itself, possibly tinier even) - surely it would be logistically possible to have other parts of the UK involved in the event.
By all means have London as the main spotlight of attention - the Olympic Stadium, and major facilities etc, but surely the athletes do not have to all be rigidly assembled in one single Olympic Village.
I have to say I am not keen on that idea at all, I think it should all be in the same place, or it wouldn't be the Olympics....
Woodstock 13-03-2005, 06:52 PM is our little island not "all the same place"??? (It's smaller than quite a few of these locations that have been awarded the even in the past. We're such a lazy bunch......)
is our little island not "all the same place"???
No, there are 3 countries, small I give you, but 3 countries all the same, in our little island....

now geography's not my specialist subject, but really Woody I think this is way off beam - check your atlas!
Oh my - I am surprised!! Being a northerner I had not really considered the cost to our Capital.
Will it really cost Londoners to have it here?? I thought that the Olympics brought millions, nay zillions to the host country not only during but for years afterwards!!??
On second thoughts, if it were to cost us lots, then New York would be my second choice, likeAndrea said about the Twin Towers [memory of]? But I wonder whether they would be nervous about security??
I am not sure whether I would be happy with it being in Paris, only cos of the strikes and stubborness ... what a disaster if the Parisians decided to have a strike on the day of the Marathon for eg?
Madrid would be nice - but there is always Eta to consider and there prediliction for mass bombings!!
Gosh is anywhere safe??
Woodstock 14-03-2005, 03:07 AM No, there are 3 countries, small I give you, but 3 countries all the same, in our little island....
which is why i suggested that Wales & Oirland 'ave it next toim aroind...sorry.....have it next time around (i get so carried away with the Irish accent.....), and Scotland and England four years later..... (http://www.survivor-online.co.uk/forums/misc.php?do=getsmilies&wysiwyg=0&forumid=8#)
Woodstock 14-03-2005, 03:17 AM now geography's not my specialist subject, but really Woody I think this is way off beam - check your atlas!
New York - 47,831 square miles
England - 50,352 square miles
..........not much difference....(Scotland can hold it in unison with the other Gaelic's.....) - America's a big place Dolly.....fifty-two different countries it can be looked upon as.....(some of the folk drive 117 miles just for a bottle of milk......then another 117 miles on the return trip.....)
........give it to the whole of England, or not at all - London alone would fail the world. Are you listening Seb..........??
