I have a fairly eclectic bookshelf, but most of it is of the chick lit variety..and I know I'm not alone. ;)

So who are your favourite authors? Best books? Novels you started but couldn't finish?

Let's all hail Bridget and co. :D

.....I'm more Phil Collins than Jackie, but he doesn't write romance - he sings it...

Well that's a matter of opinion.

Nah, he has done some good stuff, credit where credit is due.

I'm not a big fan - just a fan of a few of his songs.

I don't like chick lit, or that is to say I never read it these days. Although I am currently reading Chocolat - I'm not sure if that's classed as chick lit.

I'm much more poncy and prefer "classics". My favourite author is probably George Orwell

I haven't actually read 'Chocolat', for some reason it just doesn't appeal to me.

George Orwell..now that's freaky, the last thing I listened to this morning was 'Sexcrime (1984)' by the Eurythmics. Nothing at all to do with this thread but a coincidence nonetheless. :D

Oooh, chicklit, I had loads.

Bridget Jones is obviously up there with the gods, but apart from that, I never miss a Marian Keyes.

Marian Keyes is one of my favourites, and her new one's out in paperback next month. :D

I especially enjoyed her books about the Walsh girls.

Me too, and I've just bought Shopaholic and Sister, (can't remember the author), loved the previous ones though.

Sophie Kinsella, yep, she's good too.
Did you know they're making a movie of 'Can You Keep A Secret'?

And she also writes as Madeleine Wickham, with a totally different style. Not quite as funny.

Ohh I love Marian Keyes and Sophie Kinsella......I spend hours at the book stall on Totnes market rooting for chick lit.......Im also a bit partial to Patricia Scanlan and Fiona Walker........

As for whats on my bookshelf at the mo - thats a bizzare selection I can tell you, there is all the girlie novels, with Mr Q's fishing books which include "The Bass Fishermans Bible" which are also alongside "The Vagina Monologues" and "The Truth About Witchcraft":laugh: and a fab book I have about The Round Table, which is far too heavy for bedtime reading!

Floops, if you are a big fan of the Shopaholic books (which are brilliant), try reading Jenny Colgan's books. Start with the first one "Amanda's Wedding", which is so funny I was laughing out loud when reading it on a greek beach, much to the amusement of others.....

I think i've already read that one, but I'm hopeless at remembering authors names.

Also read My Fake Wedding which my sister bought for me to read on the plane to Dominica when we got married.

Nice girl my sister ....

I don't read chick lit at all, a friend kept lending it to me to try and persuade me but it's all the same!!

My favourite authors are Minette Walters, Patricia Cornwell, Mo Hayder, Mark Billingham and Dennis Lehane.

You will by now have gathered that I'm in to crime/autopsies, etc.

I also enjoy a lot of factual stuff, mainly philosophy, and also books about trivial stuff like the Darwin Awards and "stuff you don't really need to know but why the heck not"...

Minnete Walters is okay, but she changes too much, I particularly like 'The ice house', and possibly 'Acid row.'
Please tell me you are a Kathy Reichs virgin?
Anyone who has read Patricia cornwell as religiously as myself, would put her at least on the same level? (Read them and tell me i am wrong?:wink_kiss )
Karin slaughter is pretty good too.
Now then, try reading Michael connelly and you will find them addictive.

I have read every one of Kathy Reich's books but I just end up falling asleep - I keep persevering in the hope that one day I will "get it" but I think her style is dull, dull, dull!!!

Karin Slaughter rings a bell, I think I may have read some of her books.

But Mo Hayder is the best. She writes the darkest, sickest, most disturbing stuff I have ever read.

...But if it comes in a pastel cover, with funky writing and a picture of a shopping bag on the front, I'm there. :D

Lol - thats how i pick a book. Sometimes i crave something easy to read and girlie. As mentioned in the 'what are you reading now' thread, im reading a book by Katie Fforde. I havent read anything by her before, but its fantastic. I have real trouble putting it down. I think i will have to buy all her other books now as im a fan.

I also love Jill Mansell books. They always make me laugh out loud.

I like books that are set in the UK as you can recognise the places mentioned, and also the shops that are discussed. You dont always get that with american writers.

Edited to say - i also love books that are about 'real' women. The woman in the book by Katie Fforde goes to weight watchers and is a "good size 14". I hate reading about stick insects as it makes me feel inferior

It is totally how its presented isnt it........I scan the picture and speed read the plot on the back and thats it.......

I know what you mean too Bon, I like it when they are more "real life", with a cr@ppy job they hate, living in a rented flat, no food in the fridge, weekends on the lash or recovering from the night before etc........................... although I still love a good Jilly Cooper, and thats miles from my reality
