waylander 05-03-2005, 10:12 AM A change of tack from a differnt thead on films which books gave you nightmares when you read them?
The scareiest book i've read was a compilation from H.P. Lovecraft the true master of horror
maxine 05-03-2005, 01:15 PM I read 'American Psycho' a couple of summers ago. It was truly horrific and disgusting and sick. (Yeh, I know I should put it down). When I finished it I binned it but it still comes into my mind occasionally.
The Exorcist and The Omen are the only scarey books I have read, and I was 18 when I read them, I havent read a horror or thriller since cos Im a big girlie  :p
Voice of reason 05-03-2005, 03:38 PM Stephen King's 'It' I've never felt the same about clowns since!
Islandman 05-03-2005, 04:00 PM Red Dragon...the prequal to Silence of the Lambs. yeesh! Altho, it doesn't help that I was reading it in our basement late at night because of a tornado warning in my town. My family was all in the basement asleep, except for me because the book was so good I couldn't put it down...but also so scary I could barely keep reading. lol.
Stephen King - Gerald's Game, I couldn't finish it and it really really really scared me witless!:shocking:
Cheekychops 05-03-2005, 11:00 PM Stephen Kings Pet Semetary. Oh my god had the horrors for weeks and still can't look at Ginger Tom's without thinking about that book
Minklemar 07-03-2005, 11:23 AM Stephen King's 'It' I've never felt the same about clowns since!
Exactly the same for me V!!
Voice of reason 07-03-2005, 12:01 PM Sounds like Stephen King has a lot to answer for!
(Mind you, 'The Stand' is one the the best books I've ever read for entertainment value)
waylander 08-03-2005, 04:24 PM I think stephen kings "non-horror" books are his best the stand, the green mile( the only book thats ever brought a tear to my eye), The Langoliers, and a few short stories some horror some not.
Rothera 06-04-2005, 04:37 PM Stephen King's 'It' I've never felt the same about clowns since!
:shocking: I tried to read this book when I was in my early teens and was so freaked out I couldn't finish it. It was so scary!
Spooky 07-04-2005, 11:36 AM The first few pages of Black Angel (Graham Masterton) sickened me so much I couldn't carry on reading it.

Pandora 08-04-2005, 11:39 PM Stephen King's 'It' I've never felt the same about clowns since!
Im so with Voicey on this one. The book - though brilliant, was one of THE most scary Ive ever read. They made a mini series too, which was very true to the book, and I could only watch the first episode. (shudderrrrrrrrrrrr).
Another very creepy book is called Summer of Night by Dan Simmons (I think its him), its very Stephen King-ey, but to be honest, has a lot more truly creepy moments in the book.
Its still available on Amazon, so anyone that wants a truly scary read, buy Summer of Night ..... http://www.click-smilies.de/sammlung0304/aktion/action-smiley-036.gif
tonee 09-04-2005, 01:02 AM I think I must know not to read books that will frighten me. There is nothing worse than being guided into the horrors of the imagination. I am pleased to note several books to avoid, if ever I was at a loose end!
I was halfway through reading Salem's Lot - the scariest book I ever read - when I joined a new ship for a short trip. We sailed within minutes of me joining. I didn't really have any duties until we got to where we were going, and I didn't know anyone onboard, and I was tired after my long journey to join the ship, so that first night I went to bed early and finished the book.
That night I had a bad nightmare - something I'm not used to. It was horrible. Early next morning I overheard two men outside my cabin, saying "did you hear that new bloke shouting last night? Gonna be great if he does that every night he's here!"
That taught me not to read any of that scary stuff. Ugh! I can still remember the nightmare, 25 years later.
Stephen King's It, like others have said, has got to be up there with the scariest books ever written. We should send Coastie a copy for her birthday - she loves clowns!
I read 'It' in chronological order. If I remember correctly, there's three possibly four time frames, and I got so confused during the first few chapters I worked out which was past, which was present and which was future and read the book in order. Still scary though.
Pandora 09-04-2005, 11:15 PM The first few pages of Black Angel (Graham Masterton) sickened me so much I couldn't carry on reading it. I read this book all the way through, Spooky, and to be honest I really wondered about the author at the end of it. I cant repeat the type of things that were at the beginning of the book, but my goodness, it really does make you think about the minds of some authors. Saying that, I recently read Mirror by Graham Masterton and he didnt rely on shocking scenario's to "entertain" this time. The book is about a boy child star of the 1940's who is brutally murdered in front of a Mirror in his home. The Mirror has strange properties........
Its a right creepy book !!!!
MariaRob 13-04-2005, 03:33 PM The Film The Shining gave me nightmares, really creepy.
