A friend of mine (same one as in the "truth" thread) was quoted in the local paper after her son had been sent down for arson for six months as being shocked at the sentence. It made it look like she was outraged at such a harsh sentence.

On speaking to her it turned out that she was more relieved that it was so lenient, she thought it would be longer.

But the newspaper choose to use the other slant.

Isn't it annoying when you get quoted out of context?

I can't help myself. I read the Times and the Mirror and our local paper, cos it's free at work! But our local paper is really really scuzzy sometimes and even though I know a lot of it is lies or distortion I still read it!

The last time I bought a tabloid newspaper was the week before Diana was killed - and it was covered in pictures of her and Dodi on the yacht, and I thought, FFS why cant you just leave them alone, and give them a bit of privacy, which is when I decided if I didnt like what I was reading WTF was I buying one in the 1st place!!!!!

friend of family got accused of sexual harassment, trial hit front pages of most of the major papers. A week or so in it turned out the women involved had made up the stories and sold them to the tabloids. By which point his very good career was wrecked and never recovered. only one of broadsheets printed the outcome of the case in a short piece on pg 10.

I have only recently (2 or 3 years) given up reading them, and to be honest I don't know what it was that triggered it off. I just remember thinking I am not going to pay good money to read this crap anymore....

I feel the same, as most of it was full of what celeb was shagging who, or about someone suing somebody else for something utterly ridiculous. Mr B brings home the Scotsman from work and I buy the local Evening News which I do enjoy reading.

Piers Morgan was on R & J the other day, and he is now got a book detailing memiors of celebs he has taped, and he thinks it is his divine right to let the public know!!!! Well, suppose he can't get a job anywhere else!

I saw this too, and had forgotten that Piers Morgan had been sacked, over the alleged brutality by Brit soldiers in the Iraq conflict - turned out they were a load of lies too!! So he got his comeuppance .... however his book is the greatest breach of trust that I think I have ever heard!!

He made it plainly obvious that he was writing a memoir, and that because it was about him he felt that he had to be brutally honest about all his 'off the record' quotes!! I was appalled - how on earth can anyone ever ever ever trust a journalist if people like him are made national editors??

OMG I didnt realise that the low life scum bag could sink any lower but you have just confirmed if for me Bella and Flip!

WHO does he think he is??? And they talk about women scorned!!!!!! I suppose something has to pay for his lavish lifesyle that he has managed to get through others pain and misfortune!!!

The trouble is, the uneducated masses will be out there snapping it up with their dole money, their foolish minds convincing them that some of his fame and fortune will rub off on them! No wonder the youth of today think that they dont need an education to succeed in life, they see the celebs with their obscene wealth (paid for by them FFS, when they buy these mindless publications), and they think that they too can become like them, the only problem being, most of these kids will only ever gain wealth like the celebs is through a life of crime!!!

Not all newspapers are crap. I think the British Independent is a seriously good newspaper. If I ever need to get up to speed with world events I check this out.
Over in the Emerald Isles, the newpapers are so interesting, an eye into the culture. Each week they report something to do with the state pathologist. Fascinating. The social circle is so small, that any reports of biggies like Bono et all are like daily chat.

Piers and the tabloid newspapers are a different breed. Setting up people for stories. Limited ethics. Chasing. Take it all with a pinch of salt and use it for tomorrows chips.

IMO he's a treacherous sleazeball. He got away very lightly with putting many people's lives at risk and I hope no one buys his book.

I don't have a daily paper, as I tend to get most of my news from the TV, or quite often from the net these days. Now and again, there'll be something that takes my interest and I'll buy a paper for a specific report. However, if I was somewhere and the News of the World was lying around, I'm not saying I wouldn't read it, because I would - it's funny.

Sorry but even tv has gone downhill since 24hr news converage. Was speaking to someone that works for tv news the other day. They said it was'nt uncommon to have a van with a dish in a foreign country and london to fax a script across of what was going on and blonde bimbo to appear on screen and give the "latest update on the ground". They said the days of going out and reporting what was going on around them is dead, the country is used as scenary now to the report.

Its not just the newspapers, its cheap journalism.

Shame on them they even had Jamie Oliver in tears on TV last night during his school dinners programme. There he is doing his best to get better food for our kids and some scummy publication was going to print a completely made up story that he beats his wife up. It cost him a lot of money to get a court injuntion stopping this. They should have put their energies into getting behind him and embarassing the government into supporting his drive and enthusiasm for a healthier nation.
