Road tax went up in the last budget, seems hardly anyone picked up on that and people are going in their droves to PO's with their cheques written out and finding they have to pay more.

Another stealth Tax from our darling government - they kept this one quiet!

Actually, yes I did. Becaue our road tax is always due just after the budget and on going to the post office ready to pay £165 she politely informed me it was now £170. :ranting:

Nope - I was one of the hundreds of thousands who are blissfully unaware - well I am not so blissful anymore.:ranting: (http://www.survivor-online.co.uk/forums/misc.php?do=getsmilies&wysiwyg=1&forumid=0#)

To be honest I'm not bothered as the increase is within the bounds of inflation. What's the issue?

The Censor

Fair enough, but the issue is that no one knew about it, another stealth tax by this caring, open bunch.

Well me and Mr M had no idea either so it sounds a bit stealthy to me was it printed in the paper with all the others things or not because I never heard it mentioned anywhere.

Seems nobody knew, looking around other sites everyone is angry about another STEALTH TAX! :wink2:

Stealth tax - my ar$e.

I got it Dab!!:wink2:

But come on sf - I know it is a lovely one but how on earth are the government going to tax it publically, let alone stealthily.

Are they going to creep up behind you one day, and whilst you are distracted buying the paper - stick a big sticker on it saying - now Mr SF [cos they use capitals] your ar$e is now taxed and you owe us some money?

Or worse still - not tell you and then one day you will be reading the paper and you will recieve in the post a court summons for not paying the tax on your ar$e - and because you didn't know you will something like 'Drat and double drat, I didn't know about this, that was very a stealthy movement by the government'?

Now do forgive that little foray into fantasy land? If the masses didn't know about it, if it wasn't made public knowledge before people like Andrea actually went to tax her car - then if not stealth, perhaps we could say 'sneaky' or 'underhand' or 'covert'?

The issue is that it is ludicrously too high anyway. :ranting:

Yeah - go on then.

I am no fan of Blair and his government, but I suspect any other govt would be bad in their own way. You see, when someone (eg Censor) has got it in for the govt, they will use every opportunity to have a dig at them, and language is a clever way of doing it. For instance, if you support the govt, then this road tax is simply a rise less than the rate of inflation (HOORAY). If you dislike the gov't it becomes stealth tax (BOO).

Is the real issue that it wasn't mentioned in the budget? Is that when road tax is increased, or can it be done at any time? If it wasn't mentioned in the budget and should have been I agree it sucks, but I wouldn't make an issue over a fiver unless this sets some kind of precedent.

Surely making motoring cheap encourages more cars on the road - which is a bad thing?

I've got no quarms (sp?) with paying tax.

I didn't notice the £5 increase... nor would I have cared if I did .. :)

The cost of running a car plus car taxes are some of the highest in the world in this country, yet it keeps growing and growing. So I really don't think it would make that much of a difference to be honest.

Also, wouldn't making it more expensive to run a car mean that only the rich could do so?

I do understand what you are saying SF, but the Government and Ken Livingstone keep putting up road taxes and congestion charges on the promise of improving public transport. Has it happened yet? Hell no!

I just have a problem with the Government sucking more money out of the people and not showing the benefits in return.

We werent aware of the Road Tax increase either......I guess that could be down to how the Government/Media presented it

But I have to agree with what Tiggs says, its not the point of them taking the money off us, its about not seeing it well spent! I would LOVE to take a good look at a balance sheet showing Income and Expenditure for the UK, I bet it makes bluddy interesting reading!

I personally think that no matter who comes into power - though they may be sincere and have the best intentions will be guilty of this.

Censor - did you know that the Labour government is to blame for the death of DC Oake - it says so on the front of today's Daily Mail. Do you agree with them?

I don’t mind if the conservatives get in

My business always thrives when there in power, because when people are miserable they go out to the pub more to drown there sorrows

It’s funny the bigger the rescission the more work I get

Surely no one is seriously bothered by a £5 increase? Inflation (based on the RPI) is running at 3.2%. £165 increased by 3.2% is £170.28. So actually, car tax is 28p cheaper! Stop flapping about it.

Incidentally, in researching this post, I discovered the National Statistics Office's handy economic indiactors page, >here< (http://www.statistics.gov.uk/instantfigures.asp).

Totally off-topic, but within those pages, I found the authoritative statement concerning the well-known "Jedi Knight" issue: 'At the time the Census was carried out, there was an internet campaign that encouraged people to answer the religion question "Jedi Knight". The number of people who stated Jedi was 390,000 (0.7 per cent of the population).'

Only 390,000 lunatics in England and Wales? That surprises me. Or maybe they're the only sane ones...

Perhaps at the next Census we can get a few thousand to put down "Survivor Online" as their religion! :) What a great marketing idea! I'm sure we could get a few with over a 1000 people a day visiting SO.

Or perhaps it's just that people have more money in their pockets when a party that promotes lower general taxation is in government.
