After great consideration

Tigereye & ils

Would like to announce that the

Dublin
Survivor-Online
Meeting

Is to be held the weekend of

21st – 23rd October 2005
(Friday – Sunday)

As yet nothing else is arranged, we have not thought about the itinerary, the hotel /bb that we hope to use or where we will meet up etc so please bear with us on this. Once we have an idea of how many are coming and who they are we, can start to make the arrangements.

If you are thinking of joining us could you please state if you are definitely able to come or you are a maybe, if you would be coming alone or with a partner/friend, if you are bringing young children, what airport you would be flying from and what airline you would use if you are not in Ireland.

It would be nice if we could all arrange to arrive in Ireland around the same time and use the same hotel/bb as to make it a real party weekend.

Everyone is welcome, so even if you are new to the forum, we would love you to join us.

Tigereye & ils

Could a mod please pin this!

ils

BTW -We ended up choosing October because the 6 nations cup is held in Feb/Mar and the dates that we were thinking of clashed with Ireland playing at home!

Note from ils – I hope as many of us as possible can make this meet as the lovely Tigereye & Urk have been stars by attended at least 4 of the meets in this country. It would be lovely if we could take a big crowd over for the meet in their fair city. Do try to come if you can.

For those of you that can’t make the Dublin Meet and are looking forward to the next London Meet that will be held next February, details of that to follow in a separate thread in the near future.

TE and ils, I'm a definite maybe, as in I definitely want to go and could probably get permission to go, but depends very much on finances. I expect I'll be flying cheapy jet from London City airport and coming very much alone!

What airport will you be flying from Cat?

Luton probably...but if I do end up traveling on my own I will arrange to meet others at another airport as I am a big scaredy poo and terrified of flying so I will need to hold somebodies hand.

just had a quick scan on flights and found these so far

Return:
From: Gatwick £88 inc. taxes
Luton £74 inc. taxes
Newcastle £77 inc taxes
Leed/Bradford £93 inc taxes

Off now to do more checking, but I reckon that's kinda the benchmark to work to guys! I've worked out that if you take £80 as the average fare, and its 24 weeks til the meet, if you save £3.33 per week from now until then you'd have it covered.

BEER money is at your own discretion!!

There is a very small (or maybe not so small) chance that I may be able to make this meet. I'm currently planning to come to London for six months on a work visa...but haven't determined whether I will be going from about September-February or from January-June.

I'll probably be deciding within the next month or two so I'll let you know if I make any final decisions. If I do end up coming, I'd obviously fly in to Dublin from the London area.

Accommodation

Fee & I have spent hours searching the web, looking at suitable accommodation near the Centre of Dublin, and Fee came up with The Millennium Tower Apartments (http://www.latebreaks.com/destinations/countries/dublin-hotels-millennium.html)

Millennium Tower Apartments
Millennium Walk, Abbey Street, Dublin 1.
Finished to an impressive standard, our apartments provide the visitor with a home from home, avoiding the sense of tedium that so often comes with hotel lodgings. From our main apartment block, it is a five-minute stroll to the world-famous Trinity College where the Book of Kells can be seen. Most of Dublin's famous areas are within a few minutes' walk (Temple bar about 5 minutes).
» TV/DVD in all apartments
» Bed linen and towels
» Washer/dryer
» Iron/ironing board and hairdryer provided
» Full central heating
» Complimentary tea/coffee making facilities
» Cot/high chair available upon request
» Rollaway sofa bed in all apartments
» Elevator to all floors

1 bed apartments that sleep 1-3 people for 278 euros (£190) for 2 nights

2 bed apartments that sleep 2-5 people for 358 euros (£245) for 2 nights

which is pretty reasonable.

So we have booked a 2 bed apartment for 2 nights Friday 21st - Sun 23rd Oct.

Please pm Fee For All, if you require anymore details of these apartments ...

Isn't it a bit early to be asking for definites, travel arrangements etc? It's half a year away - why the need to have it all set in stone so far ahead? To be honest, I often don't know until a week or two in advance what's going on in my life, so making far off plans like this and having to give definite yesses or nos isn't possible for me.

I need to plan well ahead to secure my weekend away. I am the lowly person in this house hold and usually have to fit round everyone else's plans, so if something else does come up we have time to re-arrange things.

For example....driving down to Portsmouth means that lifts have to be secured for both boys for their respective footy tournements that day and possible child care needs to be arranged.

Basically I have to get in there first.

So in the words of Freddie Laker and his pals Toot and Ploot.."Book Early!"

Not cheap enough I'm afraid...I shall do a bit of looking around........although 5 sharing the tab of £245 works out at £49 each I think...so yeah that's cheap if it's 5 sharing.....

So who wants in with Coastie and her mum (like I said she is house trained but does snore, grind her teeth and slobber a bit in her sleep!)

Tigereye
14-04-2005, 04:31 PM
I'll have a look around for B&b's if you like Coastie - but they are nearly as dear as hotels over here. PM me your requirements, budget etc and I'll do a Hercule Poirot for ya!!!

Coastie

Marvellous! Details to follow TE!

May go for the room for 1-3 as my mums snoring can be a bit scarey and I apparently whimper and whine in my sleep so maybe we had best be on our own!

£40 a night....hmmmm.....does it include breakfast?

Has anyone thought of staying at the international youth hostel?
I've stayed there twice and it's pretty good. Although the rooms are supposed to be single sex when I went with a large group they let us all just take over one room which slept 16. Aslo there is no curfew.
I also satyed in a really nice B&B on the clontarf road it was about £25 a night, but it is a bus ride or 20 min walk. I also know of another great hotel right in the centre which is about £50 but I forget the name now! I'll hunt it out.

Forgot to say that the YHA do rooms for 2, 3, 7, 8 and 9 plus dorms
Prices are 20 euros but I think there may be a supplement for the smaller rooms. Good deal I think! It's very central too

I did consider all options Bob, but I thought the Millennium Tower was pretty good value £250 for 2 nights between 5 only works out at £50 each for 2 nights, I don't think you would get much better than that in the middle of Dublin.....

Cat brother senior is 49 and single - never married and not gay...just a pub/footy type...but very very funny.

Cat brother junior is 36 and in long term relationship - they live in Dorset and he is Head of Graphics for the Sunday Times you know. I'm not sure wether he is bringing girlfriend...but she is very nice and will enjoy her self...just not a huge swiller.

They would both fit in beautifully. I might even ask my sister yet....Cat Sister Super Senior she would fit in too.

We shall see.

Well I haven't booked travel things yet - but I am happy to share a 5 bed apartment in the Millenium Tower with anyone really! As long as it is 50 quid or so - I am easy - I don't mind the Youth Hostel either or a B&B.. But TE says B&B's are just as expensive as hotels - and you always have anonymity with hotels, but then you may get a really lovely landlady who cooks MEGA fantastic breakfasts - Oh I don't know??

Just call me easy!! If you DARE??

Well done flip flop. If Buzz, Patsy or any of my family can't confirm soon...I'm damn well going to book my flight..and we could be 2 of 5 in the Millenium Tower !! We could do it like big brother..no one knows who they are sharing with...strangers could walk into your apartment ready to spend the next 3 days with you!!!!!

This is so exciting

ils
14-04-2005, 07:12 PM
I think probably the best thing to do then, is once everyone who is coming has booked their flights, we can book some appartments and then decide who can share with who.

There are 2 bed appartments that sleep 5 and 1 bed that sleep 3, so I am sure we could fill a few of them between us.

My trawling round google has generated a couple of emails listing other apartment style accommodation, available for that weekend. If anyone is interested, pm me your email addie and I'll forward them!

Also www.gogartys.ie (/http://www.gogartys.ie/) has hostel and apartment type accommodation.

http://www.travelireland.org/dublin/bed_and_breakfasts.html has loads of b&bs. Most are around 36 euros for a double/twin and 50 euros single. Plus as they are more suburban, will be further out, but I'm sure TE can confirm costs of taxis back late at night etc.

I think Ils is right about flights though - once they're booked we can do Cat's bib brother scenario! Celebrity of course!! Who's going to be Jackie...

Right....Coastie and Mum are booked into the Millenium Hotel......having had a chat with mum she is happy to pay £40 a night so we've gone for it.....

also.....

Coasties mate has always wanted to go to Dublin so if she is around at the time she may well jump on a plane and join us so since we already have an apartment that sleeps 3 she can simply jump in with me n mum....she was my mums lodger for a year and so knows all about the snoring, slobbering and teeth grinding and my wimpering so she will have her ear plugs!

It'll be the only full day ye will have there, so we were thinking maybe you'd like to do something - I dunno - like hop on the dart and go and look at Bono's house [kidding - but Dalkey is a lovely place for lunch] or head up the mountains for a pint, or even just have a mooch around the city [with the sterling exchange shopping might be an option - get all your christmas pressies sorted!!]

and then maybe meet up in Temple Bar / Grafton Street in the early evening - 5 ish? - for obscenely large amounts of gargle and a nose bag?

Sunday maybe a jazz lunch for the craic?

Friday night - there's a place called the Gaeity Theatre off grafton street, and after the evening performance it opens up as three floors of different music gigs - last time we were there it was latin, rockabilly [!!?] and a rock band[and a cinema if you just want to chill!!] you can just wander around the theatre until you find what you like!! I think it's about £8 entrance...

There's also a place called Johnny Foxes ["The Highest Pub in Ireland"] where they put on a 'Hooley'

http://www.jfp.ie/hooley.htm

I know it looks a bit naff, but it's a brilliant night, the music is amazing and the 4 course meal is to die for....

anyhoo - just some ideas. We'll probably just find a boozer and make it home for the few days!!

I'd like to do all of those things TE!
The mountains you talk of, would they be the wicklow mountains? If so I'd love to head up there for a pint. I might just do that anyway before I head back if it's not on the agenda as my flight back is late Sunday afternoon.

I like all your idea's tigs, but I'm not a great fan of planning things, like to just see what happens.

The Cat Gang (as myself, buzz and patsy will now be known as) will be arriving in dublin around 5.30...I recon will will be ready to rock and roll between 7.30 - 8.00 (how far is the pub from the apartments).

Thats as far as I'm going to plan.

Actually Cat the best meets have always been the ones where nothing is really orgainised, we have just met in the pub, chatted, had a few (well more than a few) and something to eat and got chucked out at closing time....

So I am happy to just meet in a pub and go from there!

Bella I have added you as a maybe!

TE - just read the last page with all your suggestions on it - and I think they all sound abfab!!

And when we went to Edinburgh - that walk up to Arthurs Seat - was a treat for the tired eyes and it put those alcohol sodden cobwebs well and truly in their place!! So doing something other than sitting drinking all day is a nice distraction.

I am still working on the transport - cos the family are humming and haaing as to whether they should accompany me - and if they do it might as well be as easy to get the ferry over with the car.

Just checking out flights - for those of you who have booked what times approx do your flights arrive in Dublin? I can get a flight from Edinburgh with Aer Lingus at the cost of about £60 or if prefer I can fly with Lufthansa at the cos of £400!!! Now I wonder which one I should choose..........

I have decided just to come on my own, whilst it would have been great to bring en-familie it would have been a tad unfair to leave Mr B with the girls in the hotel room whilst I was out with a whole lot of nutters. And he will do something extra special with the girls at home while I am over in the Emerald Isle!

I had a wee look at your proposed itinery TE, looks fab! I would love to head up to the mountains and take in the scenery and cram in whatever there is to be done in Dublin and leave the drinking until the evening......but that's just me! The Gaiety Theatre sounds just the ticket! :)

Wow this is turning into a mini en mass Holiday!
I might have to pack my sun cream.
And do you know them annoying tourists who walk around all day with a camcorder filming everything - well thats me :w00t:

Shame we are not going with easy jet or we might have got on TV
We should write to ITV and get them to push easy jet out of holiday airport and for one night only film Ryan air from Dublin

Ooh..this all sounds so exciting...

At the moment it looks like I will be able to come...I got the final requirement filled out so my application to come to England is pretty much set...I am just waiting until next week when I head back home and hopefully find a job for the summer relatively quickly...which would have me coming to England in early to mid September..which would allow me to make this meet. The minute I find a job I am sending the application out...and will be purchasing airline tickets and the like. So I should know within about two weeks whether you can change my status to definitely coming or not. ;)
