The aim of the game is to correctly identity the owner of the bookcase/shelf or pile

You are allowed to ask any of the people taking part one question relating to anything you have seen in the picture, you must name the person you are asking the question to first, but questions such as “do you own a book on nude camp sites in Normandy” [if you happen to see a book of that title displayed] will not be permitted. But you could ask have you ever been camping in Normandy? Or have you ever been to a nude campsite? Questions relating to objects other than books are permitted as long as they are on the bookcase

Post your question in the thread, but the person who is replying to your question has to reply to you, and you only via PM, that way not everyone else gets the benefit of your brilliance if you’ve thought of a simply superb question to ask.

You can ask anyone a question, but only one question per entrant.

On Friday I will start a new thread for everyone to post their guesses, each bookcase will have it’s own unique identification number, such as 1, 2, 3 etc

I will announce the winner the following Monday evening at 7pm

NB You may have noticed from the list of entries there is a member with no name and a red herring. If you have submitted an entry and are taking part in the guess you may wish to use one of these for your bookcase or you can double bluff and name your own.
There will be 1 point for each correct entry. If you name one of the red herrings in place of your own bookcase you still get a point, if you name your own obviously you get a point but you might give the game away to others then! Decisions decisions! If you don't name your own and you don't name one of the red herrings, you get nil points

Right, here is the final list of players

Bob I don't get the red herring thing...surely by using that we'll give the game away....or am I being very, very stupid here....?

How will you know which are the red herrings though?
You might think it's for example no.1 but that could be mine, so if you name that instead of your own you don't get any points, but however if no.1 was a red herring and you name it then you get a point.
I know what you mean though and I just thought of something! Arggggh hang on!
Ok you hve a list at the end with 21 guesses not 22. Don't write down red herring, only member with no name.
Sorry if that doesn't make sense but I'm making it up as I go along! :closedeye

Bob you have lost me completely here!!

So...are you saying that one of the bookcases really IS a red herring? Thing is what do we do about our own bookcase? If my bookcase is no 7 and I put 7 down as "member with no name" then everyone will know it was mine....if I put "7 = ceridwen" that will also give it away...

Perhaps it's best if we just all pretend our bookcase is someone else's, isn't it....? http://img116.exs.cx/img116/934/z0tdntknw.gif

Anyway it's an excellent game young Bob, well done!! http://img75.exs.cx/img75/9009/n4pclapping.gif

Good game, bob, good game!

Oh crap!

Ceri only you know which is yours.
You can choose to guess your own hence taking a chance, or you can try and guess one of the red herrings (but you don't know which is a red herring)

everyone will have a different opinion on which the red herrings are, so just becasue you guess no.7 against your name doesn't mean that you are giviing the game away cos no one knows if you really have got the red herring right (apart from the person who's it is- if you are wrong) and you don't know either

I've put in two red herrings, one is member with no name which is what you fill in, you don't name the other red herring, that should make it easy to disguise your own

Ceridwen
11-04-2005, 08:49 PM
But what I'm saying is, we will all have one "red herring" and one under our own name. Therefore, there is a 50% chance of either one of those guesses being "our" shelf and therefore a 50:50 chance, if you guess after, that you are going to be right. (i.e. if I guess that Bookcase 3 is mine and Bookcase 7 is the red herring, you know that either 3 or 7 is mine).

Please am I the only person to be lost here?

Yes I know what you are saying, but thats why I put in two red herrings but I'm only asking you to name 1
You could leave out your own name or you could include it or you may wish to throw away the odd point and hide your own name under another number.
No one knows which the red herrings are, it's only speculation.

Wouldn't it be fairer and more challenging to pm you the answers?

I spent a good 20 mins in the car this morning describing a bookcase to Mr F and giving reasons why it should be contestant Blah blah, and then the next 20 mins talking myself out of it belonging to them. I did the same with a few others too - ARGHHHHHHHHH!!!!:wallbash:

There's 22 different bookcase photos, 20 members named, one red herring and one 'member with no name'.

Nox, assign a number to as many people as you can, I put in two red herrings but called one member with no name just cos I felt like it (actually the bookcase of member with no name belongs to someone- a real person! but they are not a member!) I put in the red herrings cos originally we were going to post the answers on the board and to disguise your name you could use a red herring, I put in two so that not everyone who have the same red herring next to their own name and their name next to an obvious hoax bookcase (they are obvious to me) but you are not all going to guess them anyway so it makes it even more random and difficult.
You don't have to guess everyone, just as many as you can, but I wil award bonus points for people who spot the red herrings. the clues are all there.

So we send you a list of all the photos assigned to all the members plus one of the photos assigned to 'member with no name' and one of the photos assigned to 'red herring'. but I wil award bonus points for people who spot the red herrings. the clues are all there.

Since you posted this, I have been searching all the pictures for some clues as to which are the red herring photo's:wacko:

I think I have some of them, but others are totally confusing me.
I have printed the photos off and keep looking at them every time I go out for a ciggie:laugh:

Yeah but you haven't asked any questions!
I've seen them all obviously and there are givaways jumping out of most!
And thats just from bits and pieces that I have picked up from what folk say day to day.
Ask some questions!
As for the red herrings, they are soooooo obvious!

How many questions can you ask? Is it one each?

I am having a go at this but don't know people that well yet so I hope I don't offend anyone with my guesses as most of them are going to have to be done by the same method as they pick football teams to play in cup games.

I'm sorry but I haven't even had time to look at this so I don't think I'll be guessing - sorry Bob.

Bob, but can you confirm when the entries have to be in. I'll admit I'm too lazy to find the updated rules - sowwy. Is it midnight Sunday? I hope so as I think I sussed a few of them reasonably quickly but that leaves a lot which are going to be very hit and miss and I haven't had a chance to study them again.

Bob

I'm going to post them up when i get in from work on Monday and I promise not to stop by the pub this time! I should do around 6pm. I'll ost up everyones' guesses and then later post up the answers and crown the winner.

Hey Bella - do what I did - lol. Guessed some and then just put a name by each bookcase  I'm sure I have given children's books to folks who don't have them and vice versa. So nothing personal everyone - it's only a laugh.

Has those who have guessed, guessed their own correctly? Do you get a point for this or not or is guessing your own void.

Well?

Bob
18-04-2005, 05:08 PM
Yes you get a mark for getting your own right. I felt I had to do this as some people only got their own and I didn't want to look a right meanie.
But then there were others who I shan't mention (cough ..FEE) who didn't even get their own right.

Bella, stab in the dark, It'll take me a while to post up the new entries so, get copying and pasting, there is a prize you know.
marks are 1 per correct guess plus a bonus if you identified one of the red herrings.

I am just wondering how these two are going to make it to Portsmouth & Dublin, if they can't even recognise their own bookcases!
