View Full Version : What naff things do you like?
Dolores 15-11-2004, 09:17 PM Ok time to 'fess up. What do you secretly like which others have sneered at or openly ridiculed?
For me it's vol au vents! I love 'em! and yet they are treated like the outcasts of the "nibbles" world.
So come on what do you like which others sneer at? it can be food, clothes, a tv programme, whatever!
karenh 15-11-2004, 09:25 PM I used to collect garden gnomes. I had about 10 until Mr H made me chuck them because they creeped him out. But, I still secretly quite like them.
I know they are tacky. I know they are the epitome of bad taste. I know a lot of people think they are slightly creepy. But sorry - I think they're kinda cute.
jaycee 15-11-2004, 09:25 PM I LOVE Buffy the Vampire Slayer & Angel
My sister has the whole kit & caboodle & I borrow & watch them constantly.
Love it that karen - a bit of a style queen - can like garden gnomes:laugh:
One of the most lovely old men I know has a garden with gnomes in, he bought not one - they appear AND he gets postcards from them - he has no idea who does it - but it keeps him happy and us all terribly amused. I have no idea either - but love his stories of his gnomes adventures.
Dol - I lick the inners out of Vol au Vents as pastry gives me indigestion.:p
Naff stuff I like??
Gosh this is hard - naff to one may not be to another. I like proper rose bushes in the garden. I like the proper old fashioned shape of a proper car - not the generic ones that abound today. I like Gin and Tonic - and this is such an old fashioned drink it has got to be naff. I like cheese and pineapple on sticks. I like men with hair where it should be - not the all over smooth look.
And I realy really love landline telephones as opposed to mobiles - which I detest.

 Thanks Flip, I think you just cured me of my love of the humble vol au vent! :)
karenh 15-11-2004, 09:46 PM Love it that karen - a bit of a style queen - can like garden gnomes:laugh:
Flip - you total darling!
You have made one person feel very happy tonight. :)
LOL - I thought the gnomes normally left the garden (by some means as yet undiscovered) and while they were off on their jollies sent postcards home. I've never heard of gnomes just appearing in a garden. Do they send postcards and then just turn up on the doorstep and expect to be given accommodation? :)
I don't know how to tell you this (hangs head in shame), but I've got some fridge magnets on my fridge. But they're really cute, they're little birdies and trains and bunnies.... ok ok, it's naff.
I almost forgot, I also love Ferrero Roche. :ninja:
Andrea 15-11-2004, 11:03 PM dare I say it..................cross stitching:ninja:

I have some as well - actually I have loads
Sylvia in Stilettoes 16-11-2004, 03:02 AM I don't know how to tell you this (hangs head in shame), but I've got some fridge magnets on my fridge. But they're really cute, they're little birdies and trains and bunnies.... ok ok, it's naff.
lol....me too.
About a year ago I thought my kitchen looked really untidy with all the magnets and I binned the whole lot.The strange thing is that the front of my fridge is covered in the damn things again......yes I've been buying new ones.
At this ridiculous hour,I can't think of anything else but I'll sleep on it again and post later.
Sylvia in Stilettoes 16-11-2004, 03:07 AM Before I go back to bed.......I love chicken and mushroom pot noodles :D ,now THAT is mega-naff.
And I realy really love landline telephones as opposed to mobiles - which I detest.
OH! ME TOO. I must be the only person in the land who dosn't own one (apart from John Humpries the newsreader). I hate them. My BIL has an original Baker Lite phone that works in their house and I always admire, touch and gaze adoringly at it when visiting. Baker Lite is the new avente guarde.
I like children with manners, pampus grass and displayes of glittery bullrushes at xmas.
for starters...I will be back :ninja:
Voice of reason 16-11-2004, 12:07 PM I like cross stitching too, 'tis very therapeutic and it stops me stuffing my face with crisps and chocolate of an evening :) I also prefer drinkinking tea to coffee, which is considered a bit naff these days too.
Ceridwen 16-11-2004, 02:11 PM Despite the fact that I'm a very good cook and can produce a whole range of fare from good old fashioned home cooking to international cuisine of every kind, I still regard a doner kebab as a treat .
Bonsai 16-11-2004, 02:21 PM Hmmm naff things
I like watching old black and white movies, and having a little sob when the heroine dies.
I like hot chocolate before bed .... is that naff ?
I like old fashioned slippers, the ones that are like little boots - which are made out of sheepskin. I dont know why anyone wears those little slip-on things with a feather ontop as they dont keep your feet warm.
Ceridwen 16-11-2004, 02:22 PM Bonnie your slipper thing is hilarious!!
But I can't talk - I have an electric blanket and I LOVE it.
sheoque 16-11-2004, 02:34 PM I have clothes for 15 years that are sooo naff. I have naff taste in ornaments. I have the first hairdyer i bought age 20, an orange Krups. I collect kinder egg toys and have a whole cabinet full.....I have collections of comics. I want the animated christmas figures from B&Q.
I like tapestry and sewing clothes.
The only modern thing I like that I own is my computer.
For my Fiftieth i have saved £400 over four years it is in cash and has been secreted away. I thought I would try this birthday lark...Now I can't decide what to do I and my heart set on a Kenwood Chef Major Industrial with a few attachments. I also want/need a tumble drier (my first) and I almost am keen on a digital camera that is like a cine camera with a CD in it.
I have to have a clean tea towel and dish cloth for each washing up session. My main counter has to be kept very clean and anything on itis just so. My towels are folded just so. I know i am coping if I can do my naff stuff even if it means I am almost OCD about it.
Like bonnie I love my slippers, For years I have worn tarten boot slippers with the collar that buttons up, I am looking at the zip up booties with reknewed interest.
I'd forgotten about the kinder egg toys She. I have finally thrown mine away after they'd been hanging around in the bottom draw for years.
I hadn't really thought about slippers, but you're right. What's the point of those mule type slippers accept as a fashion accessory, your toes would be blue with cold in them.
I watch all the naff series like pop stars, and I suppose IAC is also one. And I've rediscovered cornflakes.
Sammy 16-11-2004, 04:14 PM i got a thing for tomato sauce on toast with loads of butter no ordinary thin toast got to be a door step type one lol my other half thinks its minging espec when i eat it at like 7am!
oh and i have to always be the one to open a new coffe jar got a thing about sticking a spoon in the seal and smelling the fresh coffe lol
And I've rediscovered cornflakes.
I love cornflakes - they're not naff are they:sad:
I kind of like the Bay City Rollers stuff - now that is naff:blush:

Not in my book blue eyes
sheoque 16-11-2004, 06:42 PM I'd forgotten about the kinder egg toys She. I have finally thrown mine away after they'd been hanging around in the bottom draw for years.
I cannot understand it Nox.......I am dumbfounded.
There are no words, just imagine an appropriate smiley as I can't do them yet.
LOL Cat and Rob. You're dooooomed. Doomed to reside in a dark place where the only light is that emanating from lava lamps, the only food is that you cook yourself on a fondu set and the only entertainment is provided by the kareoke machine that's set to permanently repeat Gloria Gaynor's I will Survive. :laugh

Doomed??? Whats doomed about that, sounds bluddy marvelous. :)
She, I'm overwhelmed with guilt now.
The little plastic car confined to the dustbin, the plastic monster no more than part of a landfill site. Are there still toys in kinder eggs, or for that matter can you still buy them if I want salvation for my misdeeds and start collecting anew? :)
Andrea 16-11-2004, 07:58 PM Nox, you will be pleased to know, yes you can still buy them. My kids love them.
Problem is, I put the toys together, they play with them for 10 minutes, then they get put in the toy box and swimming around at the bottom of the toy box are hundreds, nay, thousands of tiny little pieces of kinder toys.
sheoque 16-11-2004, 08:42 PM OH Andrea I swipe there toys I swap with spares I am cruella if they got one I want. I collect and they are now numbered and the mix of toys is harder so I am not so good and they cost more than 20p too. BUT I love the ingenuity. I have the wooden series from 1984 ans thousands since then on. I have never collecteda full set despite once getting bulk from a cash and carry. I ahve been known to have bags of kinder chocolate shells in my freezer. Dizzy has asked me if I want 50 kinder egg on my birthday we remembered whe I got thirty three and the dogs ate half of them.
I like little uselees interesting cute things thats why I live surrounded by children
... Nox I may have to PM you on this one, prepare yourself or reconfigure your block button...mmm maybe I won't tell you how i feel about kinder toy destruction 3623 posts to my 622 or whatever don't worry no competition to each there own.....sheoque slinks away
Following orders ;)
Nadia's new song and video and any other naff single
Pandora 16-11-2004, 09:37 PM I like Star Trek :)
Nadia's released a single?
Add to the general naffness any reality tv star whose CD you have bought. Own up now.
She, I can't put the things together without the instructions that's why I gave up!
In no particular order:
Bad Girls
Countdown
Internet Message Boards
Katie Melua
Maths
Voice of reason 17-11-2004, 03:03 PM I have just remembered, I like Jigsaws as well. Especially really big complicated ones with lots of one colour in that take you the best part of a month to finish and spend ages cluttering up the dining table so that everyone can try to put a piece in when they have five minutes to spare :)

 a woman after my own heart. I love jigsaw puzzles, and like you, the harder the better. I often have one ongoing in the dining room.
I have some brilliant ones, maybe i should send some to you ?

I like a good jigsaw too.
One of my husband's naff loves is his Larson pictures. Not that Larson is naff in itself but when he photocopies pages from his book, frames them and dots them around the bathroom (to amuse guests) that is naff.
jaycee 17-11-2004, 04:12 PM Line dancing :excl:
I know I know, I didn't expect to but I went & now I'm hooked.
Oh & my mates at work think my love of all things 'Reality TV' based is naff
I like a good jig saw too...children had just got to the age where you could leave one unfinished....then the funkey fredster came along. All put away for another time.
Never mind.
I like the way it totally absorbes you, you can loose a couple of hours in minutes.
Andrea 18-11-2004, 09:53 AM Just thought of one. I love watching the weather reports. I get all excited about high and low pressures.
When I lived in America there was a whole channel dedicated to the weather, I used to watch it all the time.
I am often found pressing the red button on BBC to go onto the weather reports:ninja:
Bonsai 18-11-2004, 10:04 AM Just thought of one. I love watching the weather reports. I get all excited about high and low pressures.
I like doing that too :wink2: Every morning when i wake up i turn on GMTV to see the weather. I also watch it after the 6:30 news to see what the next day will be like.
But us Brits do like the weather dont we.

Aww that's kind of you Bonnie, but with us packing up and selling come the New year I probably won't have time to do one. But you can have custody of ours when we go to NZ if you like :)

Yes we do, but maybe not to this frenzied tizzy!!!
Coastie 30-11-2004, 01:59 PM Naff stuff.....hmmmmmm
I have several fridge magnets and the collection is growing as I have asked friends to buy the naffiest, cheesiest fridge magnets for me whenever they go on holiday....I tell ya I have some reall crackers!
Bon...old b&w movies are fab darling not naff in the slightest.....I have a bit of a collection myself...Carey Grant makes me swoon and I just love Jimmy Stewart! :)
I feel that my obsession with film and cinema justifies my rather cool collection of DVD's, Videos, Posters and like minded books and games.......however I also now have 9 action men all named after my fave film stars (on the totty scale) which I might add have been given to me over the past year or so by my nutty friends who know I don't have the heart to get rid of them once they have been named.....they are all different (action men from various ages picked up a car boot sales and charity shops). The only problem is I refuse to leave them nude and so have had to in the past make a few outfits for them.....including a tuxedo or two....but my mates now challenge me to make other outfits from the films the boys star in.....I am particularly chuffed with Russell Crowes Master and Commander out fit and Pierce Brosnans Naval Commander number one dress uniform.......
I am now going to bake my head in the oven as I have clearly lost touch with any part of reality and totally lost any respect I may have had on this board....
