View Full Version : favourite line in a song....
Dolores 10-05-2005, 08:20 PM so what's yours? it doesn't have to be from your favourite record by your favourite band, but what is your favourite line from a song?
For me it's Pink Floyd - Happiest Days of our Lives:
"when they got home at night their fat psychopathic wives would thrash them within inches of their lives"
love it! love it! love it! .... the line ...not getting thrashed!! lol!
Fee For All 10-05-2005, 10:38 PM Oh Dol...I like hundreds of lines!
Like:
A schoolboy yawns, sits back and hits return
While round the world computers crash and burn

Ceridwen 15-05-2005, 05:45 PM I like Alanis Morrisette's lyrics, like this one from "You Oughta Know":
"An older version of me, is she perverted like me
Would she go down on you in a theatre?"
Brilliant.
Mine is from a Pulp song called "sorted for e's and whizz" it makes me snigger and cringe at the same time, cos I have felt like that many a time in the past
And you want to phone your mother and say
"Mother, I can never come home again
'cause I seem to have left an important part of my brain somewhere
Somewhere in a field in Hampshire".
Oh and like Ceri, same song different lyrics......
It was a slap in the face how quickly I was replaced
Are you thinking of me when you **** her
I wasnt bitter at the time  not much
Ceridwen 15-05-2005, 06:49 PM That whole song is fab...
Did you forget about me, Mr Duplicity?
I hate to bug you in the middle of dinner
That whole song is fab...
Did you forget about me, Mr Duplicity?
I hate to bug you in the middle of dinner
I so KNEW where she was coming from on that one!
Ceridwen 15-05-2005, 07:04 PM I also liked "Ironic" with the line,
An old man turned 98
Won the lottery
And died the next day
I also liked "Ironic" with the line,
An old man turned 98
Won the lottery
And died the next day
Lets face it Ceri, the whole album is pure class :wink_kiss
Ceridwen 15-05-2005, 07:13 PM Tis indeed...the lyrics are absolutely wonderful.
Patsy 15-05-2005, 07:15 PM I agree, ladies. One of my favourites is "Perfect". Made me cry when my oldest was a toddler, thinking about all the high expectations he would have on his little shoulders.
Fee For All 15-05-2005, 07:17 PM Mine is from a Pulp song called "sorted for e's and whizz" it makes me snigger and cringe at the same time, cos I have felt like that many a time in the past

In a similar vein, the girl in this song takes me back to my student days...
I picked her up in my new VW van.
She wore a peasant blouse with nothing underneath.
I said, "Hi". She said, "Yeah, I guess I am."
Dean Friedman - Ariel
Like a bird on a wire
like a drunk in a midnight choir
I have tried
in my way
to be free.
Leonard Cohen (Bird on a Wire)

Dean Friedman - Ariel
Also Dean Friedman, possibly even same album, Well Well Said the Rocking Chair - track called S & M.
"Well I was strutting by a hoochy bar on Jane Street
Trying hard to dodge a doo doo in my path......
When I heard footsteps behind me in the same beat
And some joker went and grabbed my ass......."
Same album again, Lucky Stars, cheesiest line......
"I may not be all that bright, but I know how to hold you tight........"
yeeuuughh!
"I may not be all that bright, but I know how to hold you tight........"
yeeuuughh!
This song has now taken residence in my head. Thank you Patsy.
Patsy 17-05-2005, 08:53 AM "What are you, crazy? How in the hell can you say what you just said?"
"I was talking to myself, shut the door and come to bed".
Shall we take it to the pub?
You know it makes sense. :wink2:
Crystal Lights 17-05-2005, 10:53 AM My all time favourite lyic is
"Love will tear us apart" - Joy Division....simple but how true!
Some other lyrics i love are
"I guess you have to go right down
before you understand just how, / how low,
how low a human being can go"
from Jarvis and Pulp in the song Mileend
and also from Jarvis
"This bed has seen it all,
from the first time to the last,
the silences of now,
and the good times of the past.
And it only cost ten pounds,
from a shop just down the road,
but that was seven years ago,
and things were very different then"
I really like that one! :)
My favourite oldie is
I can't make you love me If you don't
You can't make your heart feel something it won't - Bonnie Rait
And a recent one
I can't keep wasting my time on your game
No more, no more
No more wasted time
Playing your game
I've seen this all before
Time and time again - Will Young
secrets 17-05-2005, 07:18 PM The Beatles - take your pick.:)
I Am the Walrus
I am he
As you are he
As you are me
And we are all together.
See how they run
Like pigs from a gun
See how they fly. I’m crying.
Sitting on a cornflake - waiting for the van to come.
Corporation teeshirt, stupid bloody
Tuesday man you been a naughty boy
You let your face grow long.
I am the eggman oh, they are the eggman -
Oh I am the walrus GOO GOO G’JOOB.
Mr. City policeman sitting pretty little policeman in a row,
See how they fly
Like Lucy in the sky
See how they run. I’m crying - I’m crying I’m crying.
Yellow matter custard dripping from a dead dog’s eye.
Crabalocker fishwife pornographic
Priestess boy you been a naughty girl,
You let your knickers down.
I am the eggman oh, they are the eggmen -
Oh I am the walrus. GOO GOO G’JOOB.
Sitting in an English garden waiting for the sun,
If the sun don’t come, you get a tan from
Standing in the English rain.
I am the eggman, oh, they are the eggmen -
Oh I am the walrus. G’JOOB, G’GOO, G’JOOB.
Expert texpert choking smokers
Don’t you think the joker laughs at you? Ha ha ha!
See how they smile,
Like pigs in a sty,
See how they snied. I’m crying.
Semoline pilchards climbing up the Eiffel Tower.
Elementary penguin singing Hare Khrishna
Man you should have seen the kick in Edgar Allen Poe.
I am the eggman oh, they are they eggmen -
Oh I am the walrus GOO GOO GOO JOOB
GOO GOO GOO JOOB GOO GOO
GOOOOOOOOOOOJOOOOOB.

Patsy 17-05-2005, 09:31 PM You worry me........
survivorfan 18-05-2005, 12:06 PM I want my coo-ca
I haven't got any, will Horlicks do?
Islandman 18-05-2005, 06:55 PM I rather like the lyrics of Robbie Williams' "Sexed Up"...such as this line:
"Screw you
I didn't like your taste anyway
I chose you
That's all go to waste it
It's Saturday
I'll go out and find another you"
Way to break it to her easily...lol.
Fee For All 18-05-2005, 07:01 PM ...and then to the next one he says:
Won't you be my number two
Me and number one are through
There won't be too much to do
Just smile when I feel blue
Men, huh!
(Joe Jackson btw)
Patsy 18-05-2005, 07:33 PM Also Joe Jackson, one of my big faves.
Fools in love, are there any other kinds of lovers?
Fools in love, is there any other kind of pain?......
Fee For All 18-05-2005, 07:58 PM Carly Simon's another good one with sentiments -
And tomorrow we might not be together
I'm no prophet, I don't know natures way
So I'll try to see into your eyes right now
And stay right here, 'cause these are the good old days.
or
Better not tell her, that I was your lover
Better not make her jealous of me
Better convince her there was nothing between us
I'm not those initials in your diary
But if you slip and my name comes up
Don't deny that you knew me
Just leave out the white nights
The moon in your window
The break in your whisper
The promises after
Coastie 20-05-2005, 04:44 AM Robbie Williams - Strong - classic lyric...- infact he has written a zillion cracking lyrics IMHO
'Early morning when I wake up
I look like Kiss but without the makeup...'
The Rembrandts - I'll be there for you - theme to friends...the whole song....
So no-one told you life was gonna be this way
Your jobs a joke your broke
Your love lifes D.O.A
It's like your always stuck in second gear
But if it hasn't been your day, your month or even your year....
I'll be there for you...etc...
The 'there goes Mr Hum Bug there goes Mr Scrooge' song in Muppets Christmas carol when the little mice look out from their hole in the wall and sing...
'And no cheese for us micies' :kid:
secrets 25-05-2005, 11:11 PM ’never wait or hesitate
Get in kid, before it’s too late
You may never get another chance
’cos youth a mask but it don’t last
Live it long and live it fast’
Rod Stewart - The killing of Georgie.
karenh 20-08-2005, 05:23 PM I like lyrics that make me laugh. Lithium by Nirvana has a couple of great ones:
"I'm ugly, but that's alright 'cos so are you"
"I'm so horny, that's OK my willy's good". Sheesh - you gotta love that line
Aondeag 23-08-2005, 10:04 AM Where to start...so many songs....but I guess I'll just put part of may all time favourite.....
'I skimmed across black water without once submerging on to the banks of an urban morning, that hungers the first light...much much more...than mountains ever do.
And she like a ghost beside me...goes down with the ease of a dolphin, and awakens un-learned, un-shamed un-harmed'.
She is a perfect creature, natural in every feature......................
'Bright Blue Rose'..JMC.
In my opinion the most beautiful song ever written...sigh.
Voice of reason 25-08-2005, 07:25 AM Oldie but goodie. Hazel O'Connor - 'Will you?'
... You drink your coffee while, I sip my tea and we're, sitting here, playing so cool thinking "what will be, will be" It's getting kinda late now. I wonder if you'll stay now, stay now, stay now, stay now or, will you just politely say "goodnight".

msgirl 28-08-2005, 02:33 AM "Somewhere Over The Rainbow". "somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue and the dreams that I dream of really do come true. some day I'll wish upon a star and wake up where the clouds are far behind me." I squall like a baby when Judy Garland sings that song in the W.O.O. Also "Iris" by the Goo Goo Dolls...the whole song!!!
