View Full Version : Birth control - what do you use/recommend?
Gelastic 29-05-2005, 11:42 AM So, I really need to start using a better form of birth control than condoms, because I keep havng moments of broodiness, and it's too easy then just not to use them and honestly I know logically I don't want another baby for years - if ever. But trey telling my hormones that!
Anyway I was just wondering what everyone else is using and what your'd recommend I was thinking the injection pill might be best as it would mean I couldn't do anything daft, but then I also had that when I was about 17 and living with my parents, and my mum claims it turned me into the worlds biggest bitch :D
A lot of women seem to have the coil, but the idea scares me a bit. I don't know if I want anyone messing around down there, and I hear it hurts.
Sponges and diaphrams won't help cos I'll have the same problem, so I'm a bit confused
:ranting: My IE crashed as I was about to add the poll and now I don't think I can do it!
Patsy 29-05-2005, 11:43 AM A 5p piece between the knees.
Gelastic 29-05-2005, 11:48 AM 5p isn't going to be enough to stop me. Now maybe if someone gave me a few grand and said I could keep it if I held it between my knees for so long....
Reminds me what afriend of mine used to say, which went along the lines off, keep your legs shut or I'll sew it up :D

Try it again and ask one of the mods to delete this thread for you.
I find abstinence works for me! Mr B not so enthused with this plan, but there you go, can't have everything in life :)
Sterilisation works for me, although it is a bit drastic if you are not sure if you want anymore children!
Selotape and bubble wrapping.
A combination of SO addiction and stubborn cultivation of a Grizzly Adams beard had spectacular caelibatus results for me over last winter.
Gelastic 29-05-2005, 01:05 PM I just don't think you lot are taking this seriously *sigh*
Specially you Dab, I was just thinking what a fab idea cos I'm alrady half there, but then I realised I can't grow a beard :mad2: Should I grow my armpit hair instead?
Gel I was gonna say seperate bedrooms - but like you say that is not serious and it doesn't help at all!!
It is difficult to advise someone on something that is fairly subjective. A lot of women find the pill the best - for me no though - I forget. How about the injection?? I tried this for a while and it was fine - it meant that I know I was nearly 100% safe and I didn't have to remember anything daily. My sis swears by it.
Then there is the coil - now in my days the coil was the size of a supercharged V6 engine and most uncomfortable when inserted with a block and tackle - nowadays I am assured they are fine, minute little contraptions - and again lots of women swear by them. I had a bad experience with one - but like I say it was nearly the size of the QE2 - so that is not much help.
Of course, there is the drastic end of the spectrum like ils says sterilisation or the male 'snip', the latter works for me! But it has to be after both parties are through with procreation.
And that is all I can think of, apart from the condom, which I have never had much dealings with other than the odd party trick!
Good Luck - I would go see your GP or local nurse - and discuss your needs and fears - they are bound to have some sound and good advice!
Andrea 29-05-2005, 03:09 PM well, I use the pill and it is fab for me.
Makes my periods really regular, reduces the cramps and just generally no nonsense.
Although hubby is on the list to have the snip:devil:
But even the pill is only as good as the person remembering to take it.
Which I have found out, had a few scares along the way.
Don't really know much else about other types of contraception, never really needed to use them.

I used the pill, but once approaching 40 and a smoker (as was then) decided to stop.
I had another child at 37..this certainly helps as a contraceptive.
Ceridwen 29-05-2005, 05:50 PM I was on the Pill for years, and only after coming off it a few months ago did I realise that it kills your libido completely.
I cannot have children anyway and only used it to regulate my periods, which I have now decided to endure for a bit after 20 years of Pill taking. If I HAD to use something, I think I would still use the Pill to be honest, or perhaps I would have one of those implant things.
Don't know how you can use condoms, they bring me out in a horrible itchy rash. http://e.deviantart.com/emoticons/w/weirdface.gif

Gel, after I had Abbie (my second) we were certain that we didn't want to have anymore but I didn't fancy getting sterilised and Mr B did not want the snip (his brother has had problems for years with infections etc). I hated taking the pill as it made me very moody and irritable. I read up on coils and decided the Mirena would suit me best. You can read a bit about it here:
Mirena (http://www.ivillage.co.uk/health/whealth/repro/articles/0,,180663_185483,00.html)
I was told that it might be uncomfortable and could be sore but I didn't suffer from any of that. I did bleed for about 2/3 weeks afterwards but I did get it fitted 6 weeks after Abbie was born, so I reckon I was still bleeding anyway!
As I was breast-feeding I didn't start my periods for ages, but now they have come back you would hardly notice it. I don't bleed much at all. It is a bit undiginified getting it fitted and it was uncomfortable getting it fitted but as I say I haven't had anything since. I go back when Abbie is 5 years to get it removed and another one fitted (must remember to mark that in the Calendar - don't want any little accidents  ) And Flip is right, they definitely have been slimmed down, it is really small.
Go to your local family planning clinic and have a word with one of the doctors there.
Ok. Gel on a more serious note. I used to be on the pill and then I had my babies and then my blood pressure was too high for the pill so I had the depo injections which were great - no periods at all for two years and then thinking I was getting on abit and I should give my body a break Mr B went and had the old sniparoonie and so all problems sorted.
floopy 29-05-2005, 07:34 PM Keep out of swimming pools and don't go on holiday :bag:
I had the depo injections
What are depo injections?
Gelastic 29-05-2005, 10:06 PM Thanks everyone for all the info. I'm still a bit nervous about a coil, but I did look at the site so thanks for that. I will go and see my gp (as soon as I get time) and ask about that and the injection.
I will certainly be keeping out of swimming pools Floops, although yo do realise some people actually swim in them :D
Gel, a coin between the knees, sollotape, bubble wrap (I'm bemused) what makes you think we're not taking this seriously? :D
This is something you need to discuss with your partner and if appropriate with your GP - work out what's best for you and him.
What are depo injections?
It's full name is Depoproven or something like that and it is the mini pill in injection form as I am fabuously useless at taking tablets on a regualr basis. At 37 I have never finished a 7 day course of antibiotics yet!! so assuming responsibiilty for stopping pregnancy was far too much for me

Thanks Buzz, I thought it would be something like that! I don't ever remember being offered that, I was only offered the pill, condoms or the coil before I had my steriliation. I wouldn't entertain the coil as I didn't like the idea that it just stops a fertilised egg being implanted rather than stopping the egg being fertilised in the first place, that for me it would be just like taking the morning after pill every month. I think condoms are a bit of a pain in a long term loving relationship, so it was the pill for me, although I would have loved the option of an injection!
