View Full Version : I feel a bit gutted - how would you feel?
Critique 09-06-2005, 01:48 PM My computer is a lash up that my son built for me ages ago and has upgraded here and there but isn't exactly top of the range. However, it does all that I ask of it.
Mr C likes browsing through ebay and has a couple of flight simulator games that he likes the play about with so he bought a cheap second hand computer for himself which he has up in the loft conversion, where he keeps all his model aeroplanes and uses as a workshop.
For reasons best known to themselves Southern Railways, where he works, have decided to encourage all staff to get computers so they have instigated a scheme where they can "lease" a computer and the money is taken out of their wages before tax.
He phoned me up this morning and says that he has signed up for a sooper dooper top of the range all singing all dancing one that will cost him £5 per week and at the end of the leasing period he can purchase for £25!
The first thing I said was "Can I have it then and you can have mine?" He just laughed and said "I knew you'd say that". (It wasn't an outright no though :naughty: )
I'm struggling with my emotions here. Why do I feel so jealous when I have no complaints about mine? It does seem such a shame, though, that this fantastic computer is going to be consigned to the grubby, dusty old loft to be used only a couple of times a week at the most by someone who can't even send an email! But then he is paying for it.
Do you think he should give it to me and have mine? :naughty:
Bonsai 09-06-2005, 01:59 PM Hmmmm, its tricky as its work related - but if he wont use it then it is a bit of a waste.
Maybe you could suggest paying 1/2 each - and then you can use it most of the time, but if he needs to do something that the old comp cant cope with he can borrow it ?
Do you think he should give it to me and have mine? :naughty:
Definately!
maxine 09-06-2005, 02:03 PM If you're happy with the one you've got Crit, then I'd just let him get on with it. Maybe when he's had it a while and isn't really using it he'll give it to you, and think it was his idea.
Critique 09-06-2005, 02:14 PM Thankyou Bonnie and Max for your input. I have noted your comments and what you say makes sense BUT
Definately!
This is what I wanted to hear
Tigereye 09-06-2005, 02:26 PM I like Max's idea - clever girl!!
That way he gets to feel magnanamous and you get the computer - no brainer!! :w00t: :
Patsy 09-06-2005, 03:24 PM Of course Max is right. But I agree with ils. I'd sulk for days - weeks even.
Groucho 09-06-2005, 03:33 PM Break yours crit and start crying because you cant talk to your mates!
It'll work like a dream.
mazwad 09-06-2005, 04:25 PM Is this why rail fares are so expensive?
Only joking Crit grab it as soon as it comes through the door get it installed in your corner and tell him he can use it whenever he wants and never leave your seat long enough for him to get on it (that bit won't be difficult).
He will soon get fed up and make do with your old one and the sooper dooper one would be wasted on him and would get lost under the planes in that loft.
Bella 09-06-2005, 04:34 PM You could use...........or withdraw your womanly charms to get what you want, Critique!
Just tell him the atmospheric conditions in the loft are not suitable for a pc and really it should be kept in a controlled atmosphere and be used by someone who will love it and use it reguarly.
If he disagrees, just keep sending him virus' via e-mail and he'll ask you to fix it and then tell him to bog off it's his computer..... :angel_not
Ceridwen 09-06-2005, 05:36 PM I think it is all an elaborate hoax and is concealing a plot whereby he will install a wireless network so he can spy on your every move. :ninja:
Critique 09-06-2005, 06:22 PM Did somebody say Plot? Well yes, I think you're right but not for spying on me. It's more a ploy.
Let me elaborate. I was swaying between shouting like a shrew as soon as he walked through the door "How could you? That's bl00dy mean and cruel and a total waste of a lovely computer" or the resigned, quiet, dignified approach of "How nice dear and when will you be getting it" (complete with brave smile). I decided on the latter.
Unfortunately it came out as "Are you really going to put a beautiful new computer in that s hite-hole upstairs?"
Then came the ploy. "Well I've thought about it" he says "and this is the plan. I have your computer upstairs and you have the new one but on one condition - you will have £1400 worth of computer so you never say another word about how many aeroplanes I bring home!!! Deal?"
Is that bribery or blackmail? Oh who cares, he never listens to me anyway when I moan about "not another flaming plane" and just goes on buying them - so I don't think I came out of it too badly do you?

Bella 09-06-2005, 06:31 PM Oh good for you Critique! Bet you can't wait to get your mitts on the nw PC! :w00t:

I think you have got a result
Nice one, Crit. I like Mr C's style too. :wink2:
Patsy 09-06-2005, 07:10 PM Well done Mr C. Do you feel slightly ashamed Crit? Assuming the worst. I would. DYJHIW your other half does something out of character. :ranting:
mazwad 09-06-2005, 07:11 PM I shall look forward to seeing it up and running. I'd say that was the best result you could get as the planes will keep coming whatever. BTW has he built a runway up there yet :)
I wonder if Rick will get one too.
Sounds like you both win here - he gets to carry on buying his aeroplanes (and you stop nagging him about his planes:devil: ) - and you get a lovely new computer.
(now if only I could come up with a similar scheme to get my other half to stop going on about the number of CDs I buy...............................)
tigger 10-06-2005, 08:54 AM Oh well done Crit! Sounds like you got a good deal to me.
Now all I have to do is persuade my other half to buy me a new laptop.
Andrea 10-06-2005, 09:43 AM Ooh good deal there I think Crit:thumbsup:
Just let him carry on up in that loft with his little aeroplanes, and you can have lovely, intelligent conversations on here with us on your superdupa new machine:w00t:
Critique 10-06-2005, 09:59 AM Heee Heeee - thanks everyone, I did come off rather well there didn't I.
I wonder at what stage of signing up for this Supa machine he suddenly realised that I would be seriously jealous ;)
Roll on July (apparently we have to wait til then because of this leasing agreement thingy). Something to look forward to after the holiday anyway.
LOL - well done Crit for pulling that one off. But as flight sim takes a stack load of memory, I don't hold out much hope of you arguing that it takes a state of the art PC to post on SO if he's in the mood to play :D
