View Full Version : Wimbledon! get your strawberries here!
Dolores 20-06-2005, 07:48 AM Ah yes the start of Wimbledon today. What a glorious time of year, we are now in for two weeks of non-stop rain and Cliff singing!
I shall as always NOT be rooting for Tim Henman and I would like to see Roge win again, such a nice young man!
I think we had quite a little "We don't actually like Tim" Club going last year didn't we PJ? Are you still a member?
Although having said that I do think the pressures the British media put on him must be intolerable and if a gentle bit of air fisting relieves the strain for Timmy then so be it!
tigger 20-06-2005, 08:08 AM You do realise Dol, that by naming the thread the way you have, you will attract a certain presence into it? :kid:
Andrea 20-06-2005, 09:04 AM Big punnet for me please, and may I try some Pimms, never had any before.
I would love to become a member of the hate Tim club, although I think you are right Dol, the British media just won't leave him alone.
Wooooo, not long now:thumbsup:
Bella 20-06-2005, 09:08 AM Oh, I love Wimbledon and as much as I am not a fan of Tim's I do think that the media give him a hard time. He has still done well in the Championships and we should give him credit for that! I am rooting for Andrew Murray this year, the young lad from Dunblane who won the Junior US Open. I don't think he will win but I will still be cheering him on!
And I will miss Andre Agassi this year, he has always been a favourite of mine.
Must remember and put strawberries on my shopping list! :)
Patsy 20-06-2005, 09:09 AM I, too, can't stand Tim Henman, but still support him for patriotic reasons. I haven't been able to watch Wimbledon for years, due to work commitments, etc, and the fact that it's one of the sports Mr P doesn't particularly like, so we don't have it on much and my interest has kind of wained.
I know if I was able to sit and watch it, I would get right back into it again. Watching highlights just isn't the same.
I am no fan of Tim Henman but he is really the best we have so I hope he does well!
I don't really have any favourites anymore! My two favourites were Jimmy Connors and Chris Evert!
But you can add me to the "We don't actually like Tim Club" Dol :D
Bonsai 20-06-2005, 09:56 AM I must be the odd one out, but i hate tennis and never watch Wimbledon - unless we Brits make the final. I dont like watching sport full stop really.
I like strawberries though
I like strawberries though
I think we should start a 'I love strawberries' club
Andrea 20-06-2005, 10:09 AM I think we should start a 'I love strawberries' club
I wonder who should be the chairman?:wink2:

bridge 20-06-2005, 01:15 PM I really dislike Tim Henman, i just feel he is a upper class snob, i hope he loses at Wimbledon......................................... ........again. Hee
Becks 20-06-2005, 04:57 PM The only good thing about wimbledon is the strawberrys and cream and thats only if you are there.
BBC always goes mad and moves programmes around so that we can all watch the balls go back and forwards between two grunting people.
Becks 20-06-2005, 04:57 PM oh dear just read my message - that could sound really bad - sorry
It does Becks but it is hilarious
Safin's looking good, isn't he?
I think we had quite a little "We don't actually like Tim" Club going last year didn't we PJ? Are you still a member?
Absolutely. I believe I've now been promoted to treasurer of said club.
I would encourage everyone to join us. You know it makes sense.
Hard time by the media or not, his arrogant air punching and abysmal acting in those Arial adverts are unforgiveable.
Patsy 20-06-2005, 06:17 PM The only good thing about wimbledon is the strawberrys and cream and thats only if you are there.
Way overpriced and not that nice anyway Becks.
Tesco Strawberries are half price at the moment and very nice too!

Coastie 21-06-2005, 10:20 AM Ivanisevich....yes...phwoar...
Ahh Wimbledon....
Since I detest Tim Henman I hope he goes out soon as...sorry but he leads me to be less than patriotic...can't stand him!
I would like to see Fedorer or Hewwit win as I like their style...although Phillipousis is looking good after his first round match...I wonder if he can make a come back from all his injury problems?
Oh and I have a strawberry phobia so someone else can have my share!
Oh and I have a strawberry phobia so someone else can have my share!
I'll have em Coastie
bridge 21-06-2005, 11:04 AM I hope Goran win's Wimbledon again because he always takes his top off ( COR) and throws it into the crowd, i would'nt mind having his sweat covered top thrown right in my face! Hee

Strawberry phobia?????? thats just plain odd. Is it like a spider phobia where you scream when you see one or do you just not like them???
Bella 21-06-2005, 12:55 PM Apparently so is M&S strawberries
I got the M & S ones at the weekend and bought the Tesco ones yesterday and M & S were by far the best. They also won with the cherries, they are more expensive that the Tesco ones but it's worth for the taste!
Andrew Murray has won his first match though in straight sets! Well Done!
Well done to Andrew Murrey (18) for winning his first grand slam game on grass in straight sets
Bella 21-06-2005, 02:57 PM Oh dear...........it's not looking good for Tim........... He's down 2 sets at the moment! And the other player is better-looking too.......shallow, moi?! ;)
maxine 21-06-2005, 03:12 PM Oh dear...........it's not looking good for Tim........... He's down 2 sets at the moment! And the other player is better-looking too.......shallow, moi?! ;)
Well I hope Tim loses - I'm getting sick of him giving me an anti climax every year.
This is shaping up to be the best Wimbledon for years! If Timmy goes out in the first round we can watch the good tennis players on the telly for the rest of the tournament. :)
Bella 21-06-2005, 03:28 PM I'm getting sick of him giving me an anti climax every year.
Oh-er, missus, for that reason alone Max, he deserves to be shown the door! :D
Well even though I don't like Tim much, I would still love him to win Wimbledon, although it is not looking likely!
Well he is through to the next round - just :shocking:
ooops Greg has not started to well! One set down!
I must be the odd one out, but i hate tennis and never watch Wimbledon - unless we Brits make the final. I dont like watching sport full stop really.
I like strawberries though
Nope Bonnie - me too!! Can't stand the darned thing!! All the faux grunting and people pretending to be interested with their heads going left, right, left, right, left, right, sitting in unbearable temps. or being peed upon or worse being sung to by Sir cliff.
Nope keep you can keep the lot.
And the strawberries?? Well they are OK - but soooo overated! They can't be English strawbs - can they??? Mine are all still v. green! If they are English then I forgive Wimbeldon just this once!
Grumpy Old Women of the World UNITE!!!
Oh dear Greg is out, great game though!
Tim and Andy tomorrow!
I was soooo hoping Greg would come through that one, but it wasn't to be.
Great shame.
Come on Tim and Andy!
Damn shame! I'd have loved Greg to do well this year, after the crap he's been through.
Tims on Center Court at 1pm and Andy is the 3rd match on Court 1 today!
bridge 23-06-2005, 07:59 AM Oh has Greg gone out already? Hope Tim goes out today, sorry but i just don't like him, Has Goran played yet? can't wait to see him banging his ball-s at Wimbledon. :bag:
It is the 2nd round Bridge

Hate to be the bearer of bad news Bridge, but I don't think Goran is playing this year!
Mark Philipousous also went out yesterday, though he was out-played by Safin.
I'll be rooting for Andrew Murray today though as he is playing a seeded player in this round, but I hope he comes out on top!
Andrea 23-06-2005, 09:19 AM Hate to be the bearer of bad news Bridge, but I don't think Goran is playing this year!
I thought the same thing as well, that he wasn't playing.
Shame really, I like him.
Bella 23-06-2005, 03:32 PM Phew! That was a close one!
Bella 23-06-2005, 03:48 PM Bye, bye Tim! :bye: All hopes rest on Andrew Murray now!
Andrea 23-06-2005, 03:58 PM Hehehehe................erm, oops sorry. Oh dear, Henman's out.
As Dab said in another post, now we can get down to watching some proper tennis without all this Henmania taking over the screens.
maxine 23-06-2005, 04:11 PM Oh yes! No more Henmania, Henman Hill or Tiger Tim. Tiger, my @rse!

Thank you i'll do that.
bridge 23-06-2005, 04:26 PM Hate to be the bearer of bad news Bridge, but I don't think Goran is playing this year!
Awww No, oh i am so disappointed, No point watching it now then. what a bummer.
Bella 23-06-2005, 05:32 PM Henman Hill is now renamed Murryfield or Murraymount! Talk about shallow! And I just hope they give Andrew Murray a break and don't hype him up too much, he is only 18, although he is playing some fantastic tennis and looks as if he is going to dump the 14 seed! And with some of the seeds gone from his end of the draw, he might have a next few easy rounds! *fingers crossed*
What a fantastic performance by Andy Murray! And how lovely he has stayed behind to sign autographs!
Well done to him and I loved his celebrations!
Ranked 312th and he has just beaten the No.13 seed in straight sets
Bella 23-06-2005, 06:09 PM What a wee star, Andrew Murray is! A fantastic performance and who would have believed it, a Scot through to the next round and not an Englishman in sight! ;) And wasn't it great that he stayed behind to sign all the autographs.
I really don't think he will win it this year but what a future he has. He has got to be our next Wimbledon hope.........what did I say about the hype....
Well Done Andrew! :smartie:
I love to see the passion with which Andrew Murray plays - boy was he chuffed when he won!!
I think it may be a few years before he wins Wimbledon though - remember -
"You can't hurry a Murray"
Dolores 23-06-2005, 08:13 PM I enjoyed the Murray Stefanek match today ... it's first bit of tennis I've got around to watching so far this year!
It was a good exciting match with plenty of volleys, unlike the Roddick/Baccellia match which was all heavy serves ... very boring!
survivorfan 24-06-2005, 10:34 AM Here's one for the strawberry fans.

He's what we call, around these parts, "British." (He's not allowed to just be Scottish, we want his success too... like with the other (very few) sports that welsh and scottish are better than english).
It was a really good match to watch, some long rallys!
He just seems to hit the ball where the other player isn't, and he is deadly accurate! A much more entertaining game than the Henman game.
Murray seems to put everything into it and he's got a bit of a character about him. Given a few years he could be one excellent player.

That's only cos he is through to the next round, Flyo! If he had been put out he would have been Scottish! Btw, did you hear the commentators, I think it was John Lloyd, he said that Andrew Murray is very patriotic and that he hates being called English but loves being called Scottish!!! Er, that's because he is Scottish and I think most Scottish people hate being called English......(and vice versa), except if you are Princess Anne........or Flip!

Look at the size of your berries SF:shocking:
Bella 25-06-2005, 04:56 PM Oooooh, c,mon Andrew!! Anyone else watching this? This guy is a star in the making, yes he has had his serve broken a few times but he just get right back in there! It is fantastic stuff!
Patsy 25-06-2005, 05:42 PM I reckon he threw away the third set as he knew he was losing it and he was trying to conserve his energy.
This is nail-biting stuff.
Fee For All 25-06-2005, 05:51 PM Oh I say...
I didn't expect this at all!!
Patsy 25-06-2005, 05:55 PM Can you believe, someone's waving an England flag around?
Hold your serve Andy.
Fee For All 25-06-2005, 06:02 PM C'moan ya wee beauty !!!!
:w00t:
Bella 25-06-2005, 06:30 PM He can still do it!! What a superb game of tennis this is! Isn't it great not having to watch just power serves and aces? Credit to them both, they have played a blinder!
Maybe they ran out of Scottish flags, Patsy!
Fee For All 25-06-2005, 06:42 PM Aww shame; but what a match...
Bella 25-06-2005, 07:06 PM I need a drink now! Well played and when he comes back next year he will have bags more experience!
I've not heard him interviewed yet but I got the impression he's a bit sulky. is he?
Dolores 25-06-2005, 07:45 PM I've not heard him interviewed yet but I got the impression he's a bit sulky. is he?
I saw him interviewed the other day and he was a bit sullen! i just wish the tennis players would look they are enjoying themselves a bit more! Where's the humour and the ironic laughs all gone?
I have to say Mr Murray is another one who wont be top of my list ... he reminds me of Pete Sampras, who I never liked either!
But credit where credit is due, Murray played a blinder today. Although I knew he didn't stand a chance when the commentator said that Nalbandian had never come back from two sets down!! Talk about the kiss of death!

True Dol, remember the antics of Connors, McEnroe and Nastase and even Becker to a certain element was entertaining. I never liked Sampras either, he relied to much on his serve and was pretty boring, and I hated the fact that he never went to the end of Tournament Dance.
Thank God we have McEnroe and Connors (who still looks remarkably young) to do the commentating! Although I had to laugh last year when McEnroe was giving a player (can't remember who) a hard time for time-wasting and trying to put the other player off!! Talk about Pot....Kettle....Black!!
Dolores 25-06-2005, 09:18 PM Thank God we have McEnroe and Connors (who still looks remarkably young) to do the commentating! yes! you can tell the other commentator is taking the pee ...but dear sweet John takes it all in good part!
Andrea 25-06-2005, 09:41 PM Absolutely fantastic game to watch.
I only started watching it when Murray was 2 sets up (following the goings on in BBhouse too much)
Murray played brilliantly in a match that he wasn't expected to win. In an interview yesterday he was asked if he thought he had a chance of winning and his immediate response was "no"
He is young, he needs to get his fitness up (although playing a 5 setter like that he is pretty fit) but Nalbandian has more experience.
But it was a fabulous match to watch, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Well done Andy Murray.
Can you believe, someone's waving an England flag around?
What with it being in England and everything, who'd have thought it, eh? (I know what you mean though, they could have just stuck to the odd "I love you Andy!! Instead of waving another country's flag (Though I bet you get english flags in a lot of matches))"
I like the way you get loads of rallys in his matches, that makes it more interesting to watch, and he shows some emotion. And just the fact he's only 18, when he's older and stronger then he can go far!
Islandman 26-06-2005, 03:23 PM It's been an interesting Wimbledon so far...a lot of top players getting knocked out so early....but Venus is still in...so I'm happy.
