View Full Version : Janet Street Porter
Apparently a few years ago she was quoted saying something along the lines of:
I hate reality shows like Big Brother and Im a Celebrity. I'd rather watch a goldfish bowl
Think I'll back her to win now :closedeye
Pandora 19-11-2004, 04:29 PM I already have :wink2:
Andrea 19-11-2004, 09:26 PM She was on steve wright yesterday saying that she admitted to saying those things.
But then she went on to say, that she's getting on now and just thought, oh why not. Well something along those lines.
From her appearance on tv and stuff, I can't abide her, but it will be interesting to see how she is in the jungle.
longshot 19-11-2004, 09:42 PM then she probably thought hang on, I havent got much work for the next couple of years more like it.
Bloody awful woman.
rhiannon2000 19-11-2004, 10:46 PM your right longshot she is a bloody awful women.her voice makes me wanna scream!hopefully she'l be voted out first

She is getting on and as a great commentator I feel iher decison shows much reality TV has evolved into an acceptable entertainment art form. JSP is or was the patron or something like that for the ramblers association. She is a risk taker and doesn't take herself too seriously. I feel she is one of the few who don't need a profile hype, though i am sure this appearence can only widen her already nicely balanced like/hate public image.
She is the only one of the line up I am remotely interested in watching and more out of curiosity than real interest.
longshot 19-11-2004, 10:59 PM "I feel iher decison shows much reality TV has evolved into an acceptable entertainment art form"
Sorry sheoque, I still think it shows how desperate she is for some pep in her later life career.

Sorry sheoque, I still think it shows how desperate she is for some pep in her later life career.
Lol, so true Longshot :)
But that is of course what makes it fun, the more desperate the 'sleb' the more interesting and amusing the whole thing is for the viewer :wink2:
Pandora 21-11-2004, 03:33 PM Believe you me, Janet Street Porter will be the first to kick off with someone in the jungle.
She is a tough cookie, has had to fight her way to the top and takes no prisoners in an argument. True she has a voice that could slice bread, but Joe Pasquale has one that makes my ears bleed, so Ill let her off lol ......
I doubt she will be popular but she may make it very watchable !
Pandora 21-11-2004, 09:40 PM Ooooh I told you she was going to be a cow, lads and lasses !! She is renown for being a right grumpy, outspoken person and she is going to be sheer entertainment for the next two weeks, I guarantee it! She will wipe the floor with Natalie Appleton if she carrys on whingeing about everything ..... :) I hope.
Hopefully she is going to be the Rhona Cameron of the group. Basically not giving a ****** what people think of her, and saying what she thinks ....
Dolores 21-11-2004, 09:44 PM I wouldn't like to be within a 100 mile radius of a character like Janet! But i love her in the 6 foot radius of my tv screen! Keep her in, at least until the last three!
The only thing about Janet that disappointed tonight was HER whinging about riding those horse - good lord the woman is outdoors, trekking, camping sort of gal - what is the problem with a bit of horsing around??
The rest was pure and unadulterated Janet - and I for one am going to love her intercourse with her fellow contestants!!
Pandora 21-11-2004, 10:00 PM Her welcome to Brian was classic, "Awww nooooo, not another bladdy smokahhhhhhh"
i liked janet very much tonight. I would personally have decked Nat the twit.
I hope she stays the course. :D
Pandora 21-11-2004, 10:08 PM i liked janet very much tonight. I would personally have decked Nat the tw@t.
I hope she stays the course. :D Join the club, Cat. I like people that dont feel they need to play to the cameras. And yes, if Natalie A had of woken me with her yawping after being so exhausted after that horse trek Id have made her eat that spider ..... :ranting:
survivorfan 22-11-2004, 07:46 AM It's a fine line between speaking your mind and being a loud mouthed whinger and I think JSP falls on the wrong side of the line - although she redeems herself by being funny. Let's hope we see her funny side up the jungle.
I didn't take to JSP. All the pre-publicity has had her slating her competitors before she has even arrived -yet she was quick to whinge at a jungle task (the horseriding) she didn't want to do.
I suspect she reckons being denigrating is going to be amusing -well, that may be so for we, the scathing viewers who are forking out for the privilage and 'entertainment'. But she is out there and could show a little camaraderie and support and less pleasure at the prospect of being nasty.
I prefered Sheila 3D Ferguson.
Billy Whizz 22-11-2004, 09:27 AM I think there may be a power struggle to be the dominant person in there between JSP, Sheila and Huggy Bear....should be fun.
Hey Billy, "loud and opinionated" doesn't necessarily mean "dominant". :wink2: The two quiet strong men fit that bill better, I think.
jonnyboy 22-11-2004, 11:23 AM Janet should make for good viewing if nothing else, so I ask you please to keep her in a for a while because she really will rock the boat.
She is known for being very outspoken and calling a spade a spade.
I for one am really looking forward to when her and burrell clash
Minklemar 22-11-2004, 12:13 PM From what I've seen so far I quite like JSP.
The things she was saying about the All Saints girl we're the same things that I was thinking.
She doesn't take any crap and gets on with things. And she's not one of these girly girl types that I can't bear!
culabula 22-11-2004, 12:27 PM what is that accent she has anyway? where's she from?
what is that accent she has anyway? where's she from?
Great to see you Culabula!!
She does have the MOST irritating voice ever. I don't know for sure but I reckon it is south east London or Kent way?? Am I right??

Goodness me we don't talk that way down in Kent. :wink2: I thought she was Essex...

Don't be sorry longshot.
JSP will attract viewers that would not normally watch, I sat with one who just had to see how one of her favourite columnists was doing and on bin duty this morning the neighbors had had a glance....just to see JSP. Sheila Ferguson will get Bonny Prince Charlie watching!
Career revival, maybe...maybe not, who cares but living life to the full. absolutely.
I thought JSP's arrival outfit was awful and her whinging about riding acceptable as she is a respected long distance walker.
culabula 22-11-2004, 12:34 PM hiya flip! its great to be back. i missed this place. it was banned from my last job but now i've a brand spanking new job in TV... its deadly!
i was thinking brummy, i must be way off!!!!!
Whoops I have gone and upset Max!! Max forgive me, I thought Essex was near Kent, sout east Londonish!! Way off obv. sorrrryyyy!!
And cula - I know you are in Dublin - but Brummie??? Even further off than me!!:wink2:m Great news about the job btw - and the perks of being allowed to come here!! Way to Go!!:)

Gosh Flip I'm not in the least bit upset. I don't know where JSP's accent is from really. It's not her accdent that irritates me, it's just the harsh, nasal way she has of speaking.
culabula 22-11-2004, 01:09 PM oooooh i thought it was an accent... well thankfully there isn't a colony in england somewhere who all talk like that then :D
Bella 22-11-2004, 01:13 PM Hi Culabula! Great to see you again and I echo the congrats that Flip sends to you! Well Done!
JSP, she is terribly outspoken and I cannot understand someone with her money not wanting to do something with those ghastly teeth of hers. I did watch a bit of her doing the rambling programme and thought she was very good on that as she came across quite well and wasn't doing her usual of slagging other people off in the most horrendous way. She will let sparks fly though I think, think Christine Hamilton and multiply it by about 10 or 20 and you have JSP!
Welcome back calabula - long time no see :bye:
I thought her accent was South London (sorry to any one from south london)
Pandora 22-11-2004, 02:47 PM I think it IS South London. The problem with Ms Street Porter is that those huge gnashers get in the way and she tends to mumble and strangle all her vowels. The accent is no bother, its just the fact that I can only understand one word in ten of what shes saying ....... Pity really, coz we will only catch half the argument when she starts bitching and kicking off lol
secrets 22-11-2004, 04:56 PM It seems she was born in Wales.

Dolores 22-11-2004, 05:04 PM I think her accent is supposed to make her blend in with the Yoof! Who aren't nearly so daft as she thinks they are. Mark Lamarr is another one with a totally fake London accent, he comes from Swindon and we don't speak like that in Swindon!

secrets 22-11-2004, 09:25 PM You know every time i look at Janet, i think of Mick Jagger with red hair?
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0703/secrets33/mick.bmp
Voice of reason 22-11-2004, 09:32 PM Had to agree with Janet regarding 'the pets' tonight though. For what purpose do they need two baby emus to look after?
bustywench 22-11-2004, 10:19 PM I like her, she's interesting. Haven't seen the programme yet, but if she's in it then I'll have to tune in and take a look.
cairnowner 22-11-2004, 10:43 PM What is interesting about a red haired has been who hates just about everything including cute little emu chicks, let's face it it's been a long time since anyone considered her cute.
cairnowner 22-11-2004, 10:46 PM [QUOTE=secrets]You know every time i look at Janet, i think of Mick Jagger with red hair.
The only problem is isn't Mick Jagger a little bit prettier.
sheoque 22-11-2004, 10:46 PM Thjats her appeal any hint of botox, excessive grooming, plastic surgery, she is as she is and you either like or dislike her..bit like me actually.
cairnowner 22-11-2004, 10:50 PM Not really i think she is putting on show, she may be ugly but she's trying to make up for that by being moody bitchy and down right nasty. You make think that's appealing personaly i don't.
nopen 23-11-2004, 12:00 AM i hope she winds them all up, and has the camp in an uproar, i have already had to order some industrial strength sick bags due to all the nicey niceness in there, i want celebs own fight night, i reckon joe would have a square go
I am enjoying her imput...everyone is still on 'lets be nice' mode. She is adding the spice.
:boxing:
survivorfan 23-11-2004, 07:02 AM She went up in my estimation after her retort to P Burrell's sycophantic puff piece about the Queen.
maxine 23-11-2004, 07:06 AM She went up in my estimation after her retort to P Burrell's sycophantic puff piece about the Queen.
Yeh, but she how many times is she going to mention Paul's royal connections? It's going to get pretty dull if every time he does something she says 'You're not with the royals now', or words to that effect.
I think she's horrible. It's one thing to speak your mind but she does it in an intimidating and aggressive way.
survivorfan 23-11-2004, 07:08 AM Yeh, but she how many times is she going to mention Paul's royal connections?
Oh, I reckon at least three times a day until she leaves the camp!
Dolores 23-11-2004, 07:42 AM Yeh, but she how many times is she going to mention Paul's royal connections? It's going to get pretty dull if every time he does something she says 'You're not with the royals now', or words to that effect.
I think she's horrible. It's one thing to speak your mind but she does it in an intimidating and aggressive way.I have to say I agree with you Max! I think she is rude and spiteful, she's not actually funny or witty with it either, although I think people laugh at her as a knee jerk reaction. She is a rude old woman.
I agree she is rude - but this is why JSP is a famous and succesful journalist and tv presenter. She doesn't mince her words, she trys to get to the truth. Did you hear here say that she thought Paul was a lost soul?? She does have a heart, but her career and the public interest story that she thinks is there will be outed if she has anything to do with it.
Her actual personality is one of aggessiveness and bolshiness - soemthing that is not an attractive quality - but it gets results.
Oh and btw - Ant or Dec's [I still get muddled up] of JSP was marvellous - hope they keep that up for my amusement!!
Andrea 23-11-2004, 12:05 PM Janet Street Porter keeps saying "I came here to come into the jungle, not to ......ride horses/look after pets/blah blah blah"
Oh please, Janet shut up and just get on with it, you knew there would be these tasks to do before you came in, so just get on and do them.
And your right Flip, Dec's impression was funny:laugh:
Voice of reason 23-11-2004, 09:31 PM She did the task well I thought, hard to keep going when you have been bitten, but she didn't make a fuss and got 9 stars. Can't say fairer than that.
Andrea 23-11-2004, 09:33 PM Agree with you there Voice, she did do well.
But everytime the snakes went to bite her I jumped a mile, it was worse than watching a horror movie.
Don't know whether Janet is less scared of snakes than Natalie is of heights, but the difference in the way they coped with the trials made it look like snakes are Janet's best mates. I was very impressed that she had the courage to keep putting her hand back in after she'd been bitten several time. No histrionics, no moaning, she just got on with it. I've got to give her some respect.
I agree. She coped brilliantly tonight. A shear contrast to that farce we got from natalie appleton last night.
Also, I appreciated her saying she hated the fact she'd have to shout "Im a celebrity - get me out of here" as if she knows fine well she's not a "celebrity". If only the rest of them were as wise...
karenh 23-11-2004, 10:08 PM Firstly - hello Culabula! Long time no see. Great to have you back :)
Re: JSP - I don't know whether I like her or not, but she does add something a bit different to the show which makes it that bit more entertaining.
But I have to agree that she was brilliant at the task. Really calm and resigned to the job in hand. No histronics, no drama, no girly squealing - and it cannot have been a pleasant task to do!
She did go up in my estimation after that.
I loved it when she got back to the camp, grabbed a bottle of beer and said "Here's to me. I was great!"
Scooby 23-11-2004, 10:10 PM She's a psycho.
Therefore, I love her.
cheerio!
The girl did well - hats off to her :)
secrets 23-11-2004, 10:20 PM I think she was always going to be the sort to do well in trials.
But her calmness was very admirable, no acting with her what you see is what you get.
Let's not waste any more votes on her for trials - i want to see some real squirming.
Pandora 23-11-2004, 10:58 PM She's a psycho.

Same here Scoobs. She better be crowned Queen, I stand to win a hundred quid if she does.
I knew Janet would/and will walk any bush tucker trial. She's nails. The only thing that surprised me was that she didnt bite the head off the snake that bit her ........
maxine 24-11-2004, 06:51 AM Yeh, Janet did well last night and she was a lot more bearable than the previous night.
survivorfan 24-11-2004, 07:07 AM JSP is clearly keen to demonstrate that women can be successful, and don't have to behave all soppy and girly.
So is she a good role model for women to follow - or has she gone too far to the other extreme?
I think it's a shame that in order to be strong, she ends up coming across like a harridan.
Ceridwen 24-11-2004, 07:27 AM I think she's just a tad TOO "gung ho" and uber-woman to me. What's wrong with being girly once in a while?
if you're a JSP fan, or want more ammunition to slag her off, her website is, unsurprisingly http://www.janetstreetporter.com ... plenty of extraordinary pictures, masses of published opinions for hypocrisy- and contradiction-sporring, and selected daily 'Celebrity' outpourings... enjoy
oops ...did I say 'sporring'? she'll sack me when she gets out...
ahem, let me try again...

i love my office, we're all watching fern and philip at the moment and all we talk about is iacgmooh! yay!
i knew ant and dec were short but JSP towered over them... where they standing on a slope or something? :D Fair play to her last night! Funny how who ever gets most air time in the show gets picked to do the BTT... isn't it? poor paul, it's been nearly him 3 times, people must really not like him!
Tigereye 24-11-2004, 10:30 AM HELLOOOOOOO CULA BABE!! HOW YA DOING?!!
Congrats on job - would I know which tv station you're working for? Spill!!
O/t JSP is a real breath of fresh air imo. Of course she is brash, opinionated, loud, contrary, narky, moody, sarcastic, hypocritical, snide and foulmouthed, but hey, aren't we all on occasions? She just manages to excell at them all, at the same time!
Haydon 24-11-2004, 10:38 AM Hi jsp, thanks for the link. I hope you are going to take part in the discussions here and not just spam with your site. :) I have added Janet's site to her profile page... any chance of a link back?
Culabula, welcome back! :)
culabula 24-11-2004, 11:01 AM hiya tigereye!!! of course you can ask... our number one station of course! it's cool here. i can see our saturday nights 'jonathon ross' desk from mine *L*

Pandora 24-11-2004, 09:31 PM I quite want Janet to win, really.
cheerio! I think you and I are in a minority Scoobs lol :)
Even though I totally do not agree with this Vic Reeves at all, I thought Janet acted a bit like a moody teenager tonight.
Maybe she was trying to reclaim the mantle of "camp rebel" from Brian. :boxing:
Lyndsay 26-11-2004, 06:58 AM She's coming across as trying to hard to be confrontational. She just seems like a grumpy old lady to me. Plus she's a real hypocrite, and I'm not keen on someone like that.
survivorfan 26-11-2004, 07:25 AM She has this thing about Vic + Mrs Vic doesn't she? On the day of his arrival a lot of vocalising about how if they're gonna be up there making noise all night I'm going. Whereas it seemed the making noise all night was all in her imagination. Has she crossed swords with Mr Reeves in the past - or is it the idea of a man and woman together she finds so disturbing? Whatever it was seemed to touch a nerve.
survivorfan 26-11-2004, 04:25 PM Today I was talking to one of the dads at the school gate. Years ago he worked installing glass roofs. He and a colleague had the job of putting in a roof at JSP's place near the Thames. He said he will never forget that job because of how unpleasant she was.
Pandora 26-11-2004, 10:45 PM She has this thing about Vic + Mrs Vic doesn't she? On the day of his arrival a lot of vocalising about how if they're gonna be up there making noise all night I'm going. JSP and Vic Reeves are apparently really good mates and have known each other for years.
They did the chest challenge thingey today and were obviously on very good terms. JSP admitted she felt strange and reacted badly when Vic came into camp because she felt awkward, because they were so well acquainted. She feels better about it now though.
Vic, for his part, said he felt like he was viewed as the new boy at school and a spy ....
I should think her disapproval was aimed at whoever decided to send Vic in, rather at Vic himself. Out of all the junglies, I'd expect Janet to be the last one to enjoy being a pawn in someone's game, and the first to see that clumsy move for what it is.
I'd love to be a fly on the pages of her diary, to read her analysis of events.
I think you and I are in a minority Scoobs lol :)
Before the Slebs went in, I was leaning towards Nat.......now I have watched them, I am loving Janet - she is straight down the line no nonsense, I dont think her outspokenness is done with malice, she just says it as it is, and I like her for that! So you can add me to the JSP camp Pan and Scoobs!
Pandora 27-11-2004, 10:33 AM Before the Slebs went in, I was leaning towards Nat.......now I have watched them, I am loving Janet - she is straight down the line no nonsense, I dont think her outspokenness is done with malice, she just says it as it is, and I like her for that! Yay !!!!!!!! she's in !
As for natalie ... words fail me ...
Andrea 29-11-2004, 09:54 PM I have to say, when Janet's name came up to go into the jungle I thought Oh no, I hate that woman, but do you know, the more I see of her the more I am liking her.
When Paul Burrell went to collect some more logs, she was saying, Oh no, don't do that. Paul immediately went into the its not that they can't do it, but we are just supplementing the logs. He immediately thought Janet would have a go at him for thinking women can't collect logs.
But her reply was quite amazing, she said, if you say to a woman, we'll do that, then the woman will say, ok then, and not do it again.
She didn't go into a tirade about women being equal and all that.
I am really getting to like Janet, and wouldn't actually be surprised if she wins it.
Neither would I, Andrea, but only if she can bring herself to cuddle those emus.
Pandora 29-11-2004, 10:09 PM Oooh I hope she wins. Ive got a tenner on her at 10/1 :)
The Censor 29-11-2004, 10:19 PM Hang on!! Is she the one always doing the cooking?? I don't recall seeing anyone else doing it, so how about her doing as the fellas did over the wood collection and seeing that they would cope without her??
She is good, but too dammed bossy at times!
bustywench 29-11-2004, 10:40 PM She's exactly as I thought she'd be- that's the thing about Janet, I guess, what you see is precisely what you get. She's prickly, true, and domineering and overly defensive at times... and loud-mouthed and opinionated.
But, dammit, I really like the woman. She's so refreshingly bullsh*t-free.
jonnyboy 29-11-2004, 10:42 PM I love janet
yes she can be a grumpy old ****** and tougher than leather, but she is just her, no airs no graces, and no BS.
She is very inteligent and says things as she see's them.
jgee73 29-11-2004, 11:46 PM She's certainly my favourite .... Go Janet :)
She is in my top three. Along with Paul and Joe.
And I just cannot wait to see her face when she finds out Paul is a classically trained French Chef [seems terribly english to me??] - but knowing Janet she will make some dreadfully rude remark and brush it off like a speck of dirt!!
She is just the best entertainment in there [along with Paul and Joe, of course].
survivorfan 30-11-2004, 09:10 AM And I just cannot wait to see her face when she finds out Paul is a classically trained French Chef
I wished he'd told her instead of posturing to the camera about it - I think her reply might have been along the lines of well that's no f*ckin use here is it this is the jungle not a f8ckin five star French restaurant
Bonsai 30-11-2004, 09:14 AM Im a Janet fan too. I prepared myself to dislike her, and if you had asked me after a couple of days in the jungle i still didnt really like her ..... but boy have i changed my mind. She is fab. She isnt taking herself too seriously now, and is joining in with the fun and games. She also has a long list of brilliant one liners.
After Joe, i would love Janet to win.
