View Full Version : The Final Countdown Fee For All 26-06-2005, 09:17 PM Poor old Richard Whitely has popped his clogs... dab 26-06-2005, 09:19 PM Oh! That's a shame. Dolores 26-06-2005, 09:20 PM oh dear! I'm genuinely shocked and saddened .... and i'm surprised at how saddened I am. What a shame. RIP Richard. http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/8/8_1_35.gif (http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb001_ZSYYYYYYAXGB) Flip 26-06-2005, 09:20 PM Fee are you serious?? Marmoset 26-06-2005, 09:24 PM Just heard it on the news. What a shame, no age (61) and seemed like a really nice guy, he was our local newsreader for donkey's years. Rip Richard. M Fee For All 26-06-2005, 09:25 PM Yes. just spotted it on the internet. (http://news.scotsman.com/latest.cfm?id=4745346) 23 years he presented that show - it'll never be the same again. Rob 26-06-2005, 09:28 PM I just heard it on the news - I thought he was geting better too:cry: There was a time when I would try hard not to miss Coundown. Dolores 26-06-2005, 09:28 PM I think he recently had pneumonia and for the first time in a billion years of Countdown they had to have guest presenters. Sadly now they will have to find a new presenter, who will equal Richard for that intangible air of creepiness, coupled with kindly uncledom and unabashed bad joke telling I wonder. It's Carol I worry about now, she will be bereft. Flip 26-06-2005, 09:33 PM Oh God it is true! I am more sad than I can even say. I absolutely adore Richard Whitely, seriously I think he is great, one of life's gentlemen, with a wit that was so absurd it was hilarious. I am deeply shocked at this. I knew he had been seriously ill a while back, Richard Madeley [of Richard and Judy made mention of this] but I thought he had recovered from the pneumonia that he had. I have watched Countdown for ever and ever. In fact Countdown was one of the reasons I got sacked from Tyne Tees TV. The very first episode of Countdown in 1982 [the first show on the newly launched Channel 4] had an advert break - and in the Tyne Tees Region the visuals went out 30 seconds before the sound went out - which made for a chaotic and hilarious advert break - there had to be a Fall Guy!! I was that Fall Guy - and the sack I got. I love Richard Whitely, always have and always will and I am so very very sad at this news.   ils 26-06-2005, 10:02 PM Miss ils and her uni mates are devastated! Dolores 26-06-2005, 10:45 PM Miss ils and her uni mates are devastated! oh dear ... they need to get out more! :kid: oh my! :ohmy:oh my! i can't believe I was so flippant in such a serious thread ... sorry, it's me nerves, I'm not good in a crisis. Sorry! ils 26-06-2005, 10:53 PM oh dear ... they need to get out more! :kid: That's what I said, but apparently it is a tradition, go to lectures and then go back to halls to watch Countdown! Dolores 26-06-2005, 10:56 PM That's what I said, but apparently it is a tradition, go to lectures and then go back to halls to watch Countdown! what?! no drugs? no sex? no wild parties? what is wrong with the students of today? ils 27-06-2005, 06:05 AM what?! no drugs? no sex? no wild parties? what is wrong with the students of today? It looks like Richard Whitely has a lot to answer for :ninja: maxine 27-06-2005, 06:54 AM I think this is so sad. He was only 61. Editted to say: Didn't notice Fee's thread - and with a much better title. maxine 27-06-2005, 06:59 AM I only read this in the paper this morning. It's so sad. Crystal Lights 27-06-2005, 07:48 AM Countdown is one of my favourite programs and like ils's daughter - i used to come home from colleger and watch it for four years!! Richard was Countdown - his cheesy jokes that he thought were hillarious, his comradery and fantastic banter with Carol and his repoire(sp?) woth the contestants.... I was surprised too by how sad i was when i find out! RIP Richard Becks 27-06-2005, 09:12 AM caught the tail end of some news and it said that carol vodermann is devestated, but i didnt know what at, then I came on here and found out is was Richard. He was a british institution and used to shop at the Tesco's at Cattrick Garrison. I was once behind him in the queue there. I watched countdown when I was younger but went off it. My sister lived in the same village and he would often eat at this restraunt she was the waitress in. Anyway she was a huge fan so her boss introduced her to him and later after few drinks he turned out to be alittle sleezy. His local nickname was twice nightly whitely. But even I must admit that he was a British institution all in himself. As to the drink, drugs and sex, I some how have to fit in school placement, study, lectures and the ta. Students fall in to one of two camps, daddy pays or you work at wkds and nights to pay for it - no time for drink, drugs and sex. Flyo 27-06-2005, 10:28 AM All students watch countdown and neighbours, it's practically a law. I'm really sad at this news actually, he was a funny guy, even if his jokes were so obviously not funny, that's what made them funny! And countdown could never be the same without him! Flip 27-06-2005, 12:18 PM All students watch countdown and neighbours, it's practically a law. I'm really sad at this news actually, he was a funny guy, even if his jokes were so obviously not funny, that's what made them funny! And countdown could never be the same without him! What a lovely post flyo! I honestly cannot think of one person who would be able to replace him on Countdown? I wonder if they will carry on with it? This week culminates in the Grand Finale - they are still wondering whether or not to show it this week. It will be wierd watching it knowing he died yesterday, if they show it. Patsy 27-06-2005, 12:29 PM I too was truly shocked and saddened when I heard the news. Still can't believe it. No-one was allowed to ring me during Countdown when I was on maternity leave. What a shock for his family and friends. I hope they allow Countdown to continue, but don't know who could replace him. Richard Stilgoe perhaps? Or Martin Jarvis? bridge 27-06-2005, 01:39 PM had'nt he been ill in hospital for a couple of weeks or something? poor Richard God Bless him. Becks 27-06-2005, 04:43 PM What a lovely post flyo! I honestly cannot think of one person who would be able to replace him on Countdown? I wonder if they will carry on with it? This week culminates in the Grand Finale - they are still wondering whether or not to show it this week. It will be wierd watching it knowing he died yesterday, if they show it. I think they should show it - the show must go on. I think it would be a good tribute to him. I don't think its insensitive if its a thing he enjoyed doing and was respected for. Bella 28-06-2005, 08:44 AM I heard this yesterday on GMTV and even though I have never met Richard Whitely he was in our living rooms almost every day! My mum loves Countdown and even tapes it if she going out! I don't think she has missed one episode yet! I remember when Channel 4 opened with Countdown, I can' believe it was 23 years. And poor Carol Voderman, she will be so sad, they had quite a unique partnership didn't they? Also Richard's partner whose name I can never remember as it quite a funny name, but she has been with him for years too. God Bless, Richard - Countdown is quite on another level now! Flyo 28-06-2005, 10:31 AM She was on a programme the other day, must have been Saturday night. Maybe "After they were famous" I never checked. But she used to be in Angels, I think. She has a horse called Twice Nightly. Patsy 28-06-2005, 11:23 AM That's right, she played nurse Rose Butchins. Think she was also in East Enders. Went out with Wicksy I think. Hasn't she got a polish surname, or something? Flip 28-06-2005, 01:06 PM Hasn't she got a polish surname, or something? Kathryn and the surname I think is Wazinski or similar. ils 28-06-2005, 01:12 PM His girlfriends name is Kathryn Apanowicz and she played Dirty Den's girlfriend Mags in Eastenders.... Groucho 28-06-2005, 10:28 PM Apparently he died of pneumonia.......... A nine letter word, using all 5 vowels. I know......I'll get me coat. |
