I have learned that the term lol is not short for:
Lovely (which I thought and didnt much like) or
lots of love (which my friend thought was over familiar)
but it is short for laughing out loud! What a change in tone that makes.

I also discovered that I can send a text from my mobile to a landline. It then rings the phone and reads the text in an automated voice. I sent a text saying - boat is late, lol and the person on the receiving end heard, boat is late, laughing out loud in a monotone voice!! That particular discovery has provided me with hours of fun.

Any discoveries your end?

Well Tonee thanks to you, I have now discovered that if I send a text to a landline with the letters "lol" at the end, it will say "laughing out loud" in a monotone voice, which has just made me laugh out loud!

That discovery is truly excellent!!!! I'm texting our land line now to experiement!!!

Well I discovered channel 705 on Freeview (24 hour live coverage of Big Brother) but I've written all about it on the BB Thread so I won't go into it in depth - but it's good :)

I never knew you could do that!
I am going to buy a new phone tomorrow as I dropped mine down the toilet on Sunday :bag:
Is it any particular type of phone that does this?
I think I'm going to upgrade to a camera phone and get a tri band this time so that I can use it in Canada. But I have to get a phone that can text landlines!

In keeping with the proper use of this thread I am now going to tell you of a new discovery I made on Sunday.
If you drop your mobile phone down the toilet it illuminates before dying. This was particulary useful in fishing it out seeing as I tried to go to the loo in the dark.
Anyone going to try it?

I think I'll give it a miss, if it's all the same to you bob, I will just take your word for it!

I did once wash and tumble dry my phone (it had fallen down the lining in my coat pocket) needless to say it died!

A sad new discovery because I should have known this but I didnt. I found out that you are not supposed to use your mobile in a garage as it could cause a spark and blow the whole place up. Now, why did I never know this? DOH!

Ahh, but Richard Hammond on Braniac once tested this theory out by placing loads of mobile phones in a caravan with lots of petrol and called all the phones up.
It didn't work, the phones didn't set anything off.

But they did blow up the caravan using other means:laugh:

If I remember correctly it was nylon clothing that they used - so don't wear nylon clothing in the garage - it's not safe:laugh:

Tonee texting to landline has provided me with much amusment. I've been sending texts to landlines of folk I don't want to talk to and all have acknowledged my mesages but not one has commented on the strange lady with the boring voice. I bet they think it's me and that is my best pis*ed of voice. I had to send all the texts to myself first just to hear what they sounded like.
How did you discover you could do this!
I'm also going to see if my phone knows what lol means.
oh and regarding your phone in petrol stations, thay have had signs up for ages, mobile phone with line through. Over here anyway.

My discovery came when I was on a tiny island in scotland and waiting for a ferry and little credit on my mobile. I needed to get hold of someone but mobile to mobile I didnt think I could make it and then, the voice of wisdom, from a 12 year old girl. I think I might have been talking about lol and how I dont like the term (random comment I am sure). I had a lot of fun with this is Scotland, the laughing out loud said by the strange lady got me laughing if no-one else. lots of luck, is a bit of a downer!!
Mobile phone signs - I am so visually unobservant when I am not working. Just switch off to the world. A sign for mobile phones has never registered with me. However, I was talking to a few regular drivers yesterday and they had known about the signs but not why and so continued to use their phone in the garage?

Cat, we know a story about that, don't we?
Oh yes we do Patsy - even if it is a bit late but here we go:

Peeps who were at Portsmouth already know this.

When pregnant with freddie I posted on a lovely board for ladies up the duff. One of the girls told that she thought LOL meant Lots of Love and when a poor girl posted that she had miscarried, this other girl posted a message on the board ending LOL, infact quite a few - some just saying LOL infact. Someone intervened in the end and stopped her; she was devastated.

God, that's awful - just goes to show how we assume people know what we mean when we use abbreviations. But, I am still unsure about lol because people post here using it at the end of their post - what is it also short for? A term of endearment?

Patsy
03-09-2005, 07:33 PM
It just means "laughing out loud". As in, if they said something in real life, they might laugh after they had said it.

VoR....Never ever ever tread on a roach...

As you discovered they excrete eggs when you tread on them. The eggs stick to your shoe (in the treads etc) and then you enter a building. Some (many) will come away especially where there is fabric like carpet, rugs, mats etc and nestle away to prepare to hatch.....

Before you know it the building is infested....

If you are going to do it...put some card or newspaper etc between it and your shoe....................

I learnt this when I was living in the far east and it IS an important lesson

I used to live in a place where cockroaches flew into my flat. The trick is to get them on their backs and tread. Otherwise you are left chasing the *************around the place!

tonnee - I can't get my text to landline to work over here at all. I type the text as usual, and key in the number of the landline, and press send, but nothing has happened.

just did it though. Does it take time to get translated and on to the number?

I havent experienced that problem, try again and see if it recurs? The full landline number 01 etc and it should work. It is a pity about laughing out loud not being the abbreviation here but you could always include it in your text.
Good luck!
