View Full Version : Kebabs!
I have a huge need for a kebab right here and right now. There is no way on God's earth I could possibly get one [well there is but it would be mightily expensive]. So instead I am going to quench my need by talking about them.
I like mine like this:
Chicken bits chargrilled, smothered in tons of chilli sauce, with a lot of red cabbage and other bits of salad - with more chilli sauce over the top.
I have to eat it pretty quickly - as I am not too keen on the chilli sauce making the pitta bread soggy and wet.
And I eat it from the paper and very quickly, I always feel a bit sick after one - but that does not stop me from wanting one very shortly afterwards.
I will eat the Doner type, if chicken is not available - but I can never quite finish one of this type - because I always ask for extra meat. I am a classic case of my eyes being too big for my belly.
How do you like yours?
oh and I haven't had one for about 7 years [I think]
Fee For All 09-08-2005, 08:50 PM Flip  What would Jamie say :w00t:
I adore kebabs. I like them au naturel. Just loads of that bacteria ridden lamb stuff in a pitta bread. And a skinful of alcohol.

Andrea 09-08-2005, 08:53 PM I haven't had a Kebab for ages and am now craving one :w00t:
I would just have the doner kebab with salad and all the extra's on, but no hot sauce thankyou very much.
Oh I'm hungry now.
Edit to say I'm definately craving one now that Secrets has put that picture up.
floopy 09-08-2005, 08:56 PM Go chew on a raw onion smothered in lard.
It'll have much the same effect :bye:
I was a kebab virgin until the Portsmouth meet!
It was my first and my last
Bella 09-08-2005, 08:57 PM ooooh, Flip did I spur you on to write this thread?!!! On my way home from Flip's tonight I popped in and got fish & chips, white pudding & chips and a Doner Kebab!
Bluddy lovely it was!!!
btw - the doner kebab was mine! And Jamie would be shocked but you are allowed to pig out every once in a while! :w00t:
Patsy 09-08-2005, 09:06 PM I love kebabs of all types, but now mainly have chicken ones - diced. The mistake I made in Portsmouth was not checking what type of chicken it was before purchasing. It was shredded cack. Literally.
Given the choice and not the calories, I would have a mixed meat with all the trimmings and lashings of chilli sauce.
survivorfan 09-08-2005, 09:09 PM Chicken or lamb, chargrilled, lots of red cabbage etc, no chilli sauce but with two or three chillis on top. If i',m feeling lavish, some nice chick-pea-ey hummus on the side with extra pitta to dip in it. Glass of rustic red wine. Lovely!

Me - I was in a 'no cope' mode when it came to kebabs.
Me and my eldest son have just made homemade chips and I rustled up some gravy with dried rosemary - and we both sat and pigged out watching BB - bluddy lush it was!! :naughty: Not as good as a kebab though!!
Bella - it was you I blame you and no one else but you!!!:glare:
Andrea 09-08-2005, 09:52 PM My hubby is out fishing at the minute.
Wonder if he's got his mobile turned on, he could call in the kebab shop on the way home, mmmmmmmmm.........

I shall have to kill you AND missy the kebab shops are all now shut!!! OK??? And that means ALL over the UK especially those near the middle of the east coast, and especially, especially, especially those where Andrea's husband may be loitering with intent to buy one for Missy who shall be smothered by wrapping in the endless lengths of doner if she eats one!!
Critique 09-08-2005, 10:20 PM Now call me strange (the local Kebab place probably did) but I've been known to go in and get a "kebab" but hold the meat (said American style).
Yes, so what I had was pitta bread with salad in it and some chili sauce and very nice it was too. No, I'm not vegetarian but I really don't like that unnaturally shaped, chopped up and reclaimed bits of everything "meat".
Alright, I admit that I've no idea what goes to make up that kebab meat but it sure doesn't look like any animal I've ever seen :bag:

That is tomorrow nights mission Crit - I have a meeting that finishes about 9.30ish - if I am very very speedy I may get the 40 mile round trip to the kebab shop and order just that!! with extra chilli sauce! Although I may have to have chargrilled chicken bits in it!! Thank you!! I NEED one!!
Bella 10-08-2005, 08:58 AM What have I started? Has everyone got over their kebab fetishes? SF, can I just say your kebab sounds delicious??!! Yummy, scruptious!
Bonsai 10-08-2005, 08:59 AM Im partial to a kebab too - although i havent had one now for about 3 years.
When my in-laws used to live in Loughton they had a wonderful kebab shop in the high street and we would get one about once a month. I like a doner kebab with just salad and loads of onions. BUT the next morning my breath smells as though someone has shat in my mouth - not nice at all :ninja:
I occasionally go for the chargrilled chicken one, with again lashings of salad.
I always have to have a side order of chips too and REALLY blow the cholestrol (sp) levels.
I want one now !!!
Tigereye 10-08-2005, 09:54 AM oh god I'm drooling. Not a good look when a client is in the room.
My first ever job was making kebabs with a guy called Ismail from Istanbul. It was 1979, and no-one in Ireland had heard of kebabs, and they took some convincing - 'Ugh, too messy' 'Can't eat them like burgers', 'too spicy' etc, but we soldiered on and the little hut beside the Baggot Inn in Dublin soon had queues round the block.
Ishmail finally sold his concern to Abrakababra for a cool profit and went back to Turkey. Lovely bloke, glad he did well.
He also showed me his secret recipe for the meat mix -[nowadays it's usually prefabricated mass produced preshaped stuff] with fresh herbs and yoghurt which we used to mix up in a tin baby bath in the tiny kitchen. We'd roll the mix into large sausage shapes and circle them around the metal spike to form the familiar kebab shape. We also made rather nifty sauces - the usual if deadly chilii and a very decent garlic mayonnaise, but also a kind of hummus [you would have loved it SF!!] and a mint raita yogurty sauce.
I still dream of them sometimes, but have never found one that comes even close.......
{oh god, crying and drooling - the client is getting worried now!!]

That is the normal rule, Bonnie I have to agree but I was stone cold sober albiet a little tired last night, but I loved mine! I even ordered a large one, it was so delicious and I made myself think that all the salad that was on it made it very healthy indeed!! :w00t:

I have thought of little else since last night - so much so I have made Mr F promise that on his way home tonight he is to bring me in a chicken kebab, with tons of red cabbage and a busload of HOT HOT HOT chilli sauce.

Bonsai 10-08-2005, 10:31 AM Roll on tea-time - oh and the BB eviction WHAT A GREAT NIGHT THIS IS TO BE!!!!!!
Sounds blummin wonderful to me (i could go a kebab now). Dont forget to crack open the wine too .... although lager goes better with a kebab i find as you can muster up some fantastic belches whilst eating :bag:
Fee For All 10-08-2005, 10:32 AM I wonder how many of us will be eating kebabs tonight? Looks like Flip and me for sure :w00t:
Bonsai 10-08-2005, 10:33 AM Have you ever tried those really dodgy ones they sell in supermarkets - that you nuke in the microwave - vomit inducing.

Oh God no! I never ever use my microwave to actually cook a meal, I use it to defrost chicken, heat up Abbie's milk but that's it! Microwave meals really are disgusting!!!
Microwave meals really are disgusting!!!
Bella you know my fastidiousness when it comes to food, in particular Miked ready meals? this is how bad my desperation was last night after I knew you had stuffed your ever so delicate and little mouth with a hummungus kebab - I would have eaten 10 microwaveable kebabs!!:wink2:
Bonsai 10-08-2005, 10:47 AM Microwave meals really are disgusting!!!
I 110% agree, but i have found one microwave meal thats actually quite nice ... although no doubt stuffed with tonnes of additives and E numbers. Its a Tescos liver and bacon hot pot. Its delish and i adore it. Occasionally (about once bi monthly) Mr.B and i have one before nipping out if we are in a rush. Normally i would make my own liver and bacon.
(about once bi monthly)
Or as Shakespeare is oft heard saying - fortnightly!!!
Bonnie you do make me larf!!
Marmoset 10-08-2005, 06:41 PM About thirty minutes ago I finished an absolutely GORRRGEOUS doner kebab, stuffed with salad and chilli sauce, and garlic sauce.
Took me about 40 minutes to eat but every second was PURE ecstacy :)
I have eaten too much, you have no idea how far I have had to lean back in my chair to type this.
M :)
Mine was heaven to behold and heaven to eat. It was a chargrilled chicken one, there was tons of little bits of breast chargrilled to perfection, lots of onion, red cabbage [could have done with more though] and some lettuce - and a huge pot of chilli sauce to pour over the top. All sitting on a HUGE pitta bread - it was FABULOUS!! And it was only $3.90 [that is pounds btw]
Thank you Bella for making me go out and join the world of kebabs!! (http://www.survivor-online.co.uk/forums/misc.php?do=getsmilies&wysiwyg=1&forumid=0#)
Bella 11-08-2005, 12:34 PM Pleasure, I am so glad that it lived up to it's expectations! :D
Andrea 11-08-2005, 09:21 PM I've still not had one
Voice of reason 11-08-2005, 10:51 PM You can only eat kebabs when your drunk as skunks ...... thats the Kebab rule
So true! and when you wake up feeling hideous the next day it is always the kebab that did it
Patsy 11-08-2005, 11:08 PM No no no. When I'm drunk, the chilli sauce is too hot. We sometimes partake totally sober. :shocking:
I've still not had one
Oh Andrea I am so sorry about that, I was so jealous that you were going to have one a whole 24 hours before me, now I feel all rotten saying that I would smother you in doner meat - what a wicked girl I am - sowwwy.
Go and get one tonight, you know you want to?
Dolores 12-08-2005, 07:20 AM Have you ever tried those really dodgy ones they sell in supermarkets - that you nuke in the microwave

I had the best chicken kebabs in Sydney. They were more like chicken wraps. I used to get them with BBQ sauce after a night out and my God they were bloody delicious. So much so that I used to actually be dying for the clubs to finish so I could go and get one.
Tigereye 12-08-2005, 02:22 PM Just had a mongo kebab for lunch - all in the course of research you understand - and it was delish. The meat left a bit to be desired - the usual pre-formed stuff, but the sauces, salads and pitta were fresh and yummy......
feel too stuffed for a pint now....
.
Bella 12-08-2005, 02:25 PM feel too stuffed for a pint now....
