View Full Version : Do you think the name of the board should be updated?
Dolores 09-08-2005, 09:54 PM Let's face it Survivor is way in the past and I often think that the name could be changed to something more generic.
What do you think?
I know it's a bit controversial but hey!
Patsy 09-08-2005, 10:00 PM I voted not bothered, because I'm not. Not been here long enough to be bored with it yet. I would be apathetic if I could be bothered...... :bored:
Fee For All 09-08-2005, 10:02 PM I said No. I like the little palm tree :ninja:
Dolores 09-08-2005, 10:03 PM I said No. I like the little palm tree :ninja:
hey! slow down! I'll do the logo poll later!
Haydon 09-08-2005, 10:03 PM ooo interesting thread! I've thought about it many a time, but
1. it would be a pain to move
2. survivor-online is well ranked in the search engines and other sites link to it
3. I can't think of a suitable (domain) name that isn't already taken
Patsy 09-08-2005, 10:04 PM Oh techno techno blah blah blah. Just pretend, Haydon. Honestly!

bearing in mind I know nothing about these types of things .... couldn't you just have a page to say to anyone finding us via "survivor" links that the site has moved it can be found on this link "blah blah"?
NOOOOOOOO - I bought the t-shirt!!!:glare:
Dolores 09-08-2005, 10:08 PM NOOOOOOOO - I bought the t-shirt!!!:glare:
oh lordy yes! now that's you, ILS and Coastie who are going to be "no's" ... ok who else bought the tee-shirt?
Fee For All 09-08-2005, 10:08 PM When I joined I didn't even think it was about the programme (which I'd never watched  )
I just assumed it was a place where all the flotsam and jetsam ended up :w00t:
Andrea 09-08-2005, 10:09 PM I voted no, because I think it explains where the forum started.
And I haven't got a t-shirt
secrets 09-08-2005, 10:10 PM I've got one that state's "I'm in shape - a round one" does that count?
Patsy 09-08-2005, 10:11 PM I just assumed it was a place where all the flotsam and jetsam ended up :w00t:
Hello
Haydon 09-08-2005, 10:11 PM NOOOOOOOO - I bought the t-shirt!!!:glare:
LMAO. I hadn't thought about that! I still have about 4 that I wear around the house (not all at once obviously!)
Dolores - yes, that could be done. (clever cloggs!) ;)
I voted No as I have the t-shirt!
Patsy 09-08-2005, 10:14 PM Dolores - yes, that could be done. (clever cloggs!) ;)
Woooooo, get you. :smartie:
First time for everything I suppose.
Dolores 09-08-2005, 10:15 PM Woooooo, get you. :smartie:
i know! after a hard day's graft and achieving nothing i can now go to bed happy!
i can now go to bed happy! hey hey - I now know who has my rampant rabbit that I lost!!!:bag:
I voted no as I've spent ages designing my T shirt for the Dublin meet and I loved survivor too much, wouldn't be the same.
What alternative did you have in mind Dol?
Pandora 09-08-2005, 10:49 PM Im not bothered..
karenh 09-08-2005, 11:05 PM I've said "yes" partly cos hardly anyone else has, but mainly because I've wondered in the past why we are still called SO.
We should be called Reality-Online or summat.....
Islandman 10-08-2005, 12:39 AM I voted no, because I think it explains where the forum started.
And I haven't got a t-shirt
What she said **points up**
Voice of reason 10-08-2005, 12:43 AM I voted no, anyone still here after this length of time really is a 'Survivor' :w00t:
Aondeag 10-08-2005, 07:53 AM Gawd NO!
Jezuz...I'd never find it again!
:-O
Bella 10-08-2005, 08:03 AM Don't have the t-shirt, are we getting new ones for the Dublin meet :w00t: , but I have voted no as why change a habit of a lifetime!? :)
Bonsai 10-08-2005, 08:45 AM No - i love the name, and would feel bereft without it ...... cor how dramatic am i being lately :w00t:
No, no and once again No.
Like you say Haydon SO figures high in the search engines, we still get lots of new members through the current shows .
[b]IF IT AIN'T BROKE DON'T FIX IT!!
karenh 10-08-2005, 10:34 AM **Sigh**
You lot are just sooo unadventurous. So resistant to change!
(Apart from the other people who voted "yes" alongside me, of course)
Bonsai 10-08-2005, 10:36 AM (Apart from the other people who voted "yes" alongside me, of course)
All three of them
karenh 10-08-2005, 12:00 PM All three of them
Well, you may jest, but its 4 now......... Oh yes......
But numbers are irrelevant really because it just proves that we are the one's that have our fingers on the pulse. It always the case that the really cutting edge ideas are only taken on board by the most radical minds initially.
floopy 10-08-2005, 03:07 PM Totally agree Kaz :wink_kiss .
I think the crux of the matter is, if you want the board to stay the same as it is now, keep the name the same. If you want it to develop and evolve (who knows what into) then the name should be changed to attract the kind of people who will make that happen.
IMO, the name does not reflect the site and could well deter potential new members from joining as it appears to be a specialist site relating to one particular programme - frinstance, there's no way I'd even investigate a forum that called itself JohnMajor.co.uk if my interest was in general politics as I'd presume, rightly or wrongly, that that particular forum was primarily concerned with JM.
:fireman:
Bonsai 10-08-2005, 03:12 PM But - do many people know what 'survivor' is ? Would they know it was a reality TV show ?

Although I voted for the name to say the same, I think you have made some very valid points Floopy
Can I change my vote?
floopy 10-08-2005, 03:15 PM But - do many people know what 'survivor' is ? Would they know it was a reality TV show ?
Kind of backs up my argument though really - what good's a name that no-one understands?
floopy 10-08-2005, 03:16 PM Can I change my vote?
Yes, yes you can. :smartie:
Karen - make that 6 :D
karenh 10-08-2005, 03:21 PM Wahey - we have 6 whole radicals on the board! Who'dve thought it?
Good points in the post Floopy btw.
mazwad 10-08-2005, 04:09 PM I voted no but then again I am not very radical and I happen to like the name.
I didn't even realise when I joined where the name came from as I was introduced to it through Crit.
Maybe I just don't like change as I always hate it when they change the name of pubs round here as they seem to do quite often.
Bella 10-08-2005, 05:01 PM Even if the name was changed it would still be SO to me. The thing is when you first introduced to something you still call it by it's original name. To me Veet will always be Immac, Cif will always be Jif, a Snickers bar is still a Marathon to me Starbursts or whatever the heck the new name is will always be Opal Fruits to me!
I agree Bella, I always use the original name of something, so if Haydon changed the name, it wouldn't make any difference to me, this place would always be SO, but it might draw in more new members
bridge 10-08-2005, 06:36 PM I voted No because i am cr-ap on the computer as it is, i do not need to be confused by a logo change!
I would get lost and you would never hear from me again! (No sarcastic comments thank you.)
Haydon 10-08-2005, 07:12 PM Here's a thought (god why do I set myself up for these things).... we keep SO, but create a new identity as well.
The SO site would remain but there would be links to the new site, so therefore eventually almalgamating (sp) the two. Although, as I type this I'm thinking I would have to buy another vbulletin(forum) license to put the software on the new site as well.
Fee For All 10-08-2005, 07:19 PM I was going to suggest changing the blurb on the home page to play down the reference to Survivor. Sort of inferring that if you've been adrift on the internet and survived, etc etc,
But have you just done that Haydon ?
Patsy 10-08-2005, 07:19 PM But would it then still not be called SO?
Haydon 10-08-2005, 07:31 PM No, I haven't really done anything to the homepage. There are a couple of links on there to Survivor stuff.
Not it wouldn't be called SO, something else. But I could always create a "SO skin" for the forums so for those that like to see the logo etc could.
secrets 10-08-2005, 08:50 PM Having given it some thought i have voted for yes.
At the end of the day we will lose none of our lovely posters through it, and there is a lot to be said in the addage 'a change is as good as a rest.'
*I will leave the technical wizardry to you Haydon.:)
Voice of reason 11-08-2005, 12:41 AM No it wouldn't be called SO, something else.
Ok, well if there is to be a name change, can I suggest the title, 'Virtual Reality' please?
Andrea 11-08-2005, 09:36 PM Ooh "Virtual Reality".....we might get JKay on here then, woooooooo :w00t:
karenh 11-08-2005, 09:40 PM Ooh "Virtual Reality".....we might get JKay on here then, woooooooo :w00t:
Well, I'd love it if we did (I quite fancy JK and he makes good tunes), but wasn't the song called "Virtual Insanity"?
Patsy 11-08-2005, 09:40 PM **adopts pedant's hat**
Or the other single, Virtual Insanity. :bye:
Edit: snap kazza! :w00t:
karenh 11-08-2005, 09:41 PM Oooh look.
Are we Great Minds or Fools Patsy?
Patsy 11-08-2005, 09:43 PM Great minds, CLEARLY!
Andrea 11-08-2005, 09:43 PM Ermmmm, oops, well others might make the same mistake as me :bag:
Are we Great Minds or Fools Patsy?
Great minds, CLEARLY!
Now that is the best laugh I have had in ages!! :w00t: :w00t:
Fee For All 11-08-2005, 10:04 PM How about calling in Virtual Inanity? :bag:
Andrea 11-08-2005, 10:09 PM Virtual Insania :w00t:
Patsy 11-08-2005, 10:09 PM Like it, like it.
Patsy 11-08-2005, 10:14 PM Virtual Insania :w00t:

Eh?!?! :wink2:
Coastie 13-08-2005, 08:42 AM No don't change it.....I know Dol is only contemplating the thought as a means of losing those of us who are easily confused!
Dolores 13-08-2005, 11:16 AM No don't change it.....I know Dol is only contemplating the thought as a means of losing those of us who are easily confused!
I'm sorry to sound harsh Coastie but the easily confused deserve to be lost! It's all about natural selection and we would only be left with the tenacious and not so easily confused posters! .... I count that as all of us then!
Coastie 13-08-2005, 11:30 AM I'm sorry to sound harsh Coastie but the easily confused deserve to be lost! It's all about natural selection and we would only be left with the tenacious and not so easily confused posters! .... I count that as all of us then!
Hmmmmm..... :glare:
Eh?!?! :wink2:
Exactly!!!:glare:
OR HEAVEN HELP US THOSE THAT SHOUT EVERYFING!!!!:glare: :glare:
People will never find us if we change the name and like H says it's ranked well in the search engines so it's probably best to leave it for the time being. I did have a good name for the site the last time we discussed this, but a few months after I suggested it the name was taken. Wish I'd registered it for myself now - damn.
floopy 13-08-2005, 04:42 PM Which people?
Apart from the people who already know and who will presumably be told of any impending move.
I mean the ones who might go absent for a while, those who only visit occasionally etc.
