View Full Version : Charlie & the Chocolate Factory
I'm not even sure if this is out in the UK yet - is it?
I went to see this [show off mode] in the Chinese theatre in Hollywood [/show off mode].
It's an excellent movie - Johnny Depp is brilliant as Willy Wonka. This new remake also seems to stick closer to the book than its original predecessor.
However I still can't make up my mind whether I like this one better than the original. Granted this one has better special effects etc, the original movie will always have that magic that I loved when I watched it as a wee boy.
Oh and I didn't like the oompa loompas in this one.
Still, it's a great film and I urge you to go and see it!
Bella 12-08-2005, 02:23 PM Did you know that there was only one oompa loompa and it was digitially enhanced with computer graphics to show loads of them!
ooh, it was a million times better than the first one, and have to say again Johnny Depp was brilliant in it. The kids were great in it too, unlike the child actors in Harry Potter who are just dreadful. I think I liked it better because it did stick to the original story apart from having flashbacks to Willie Wonka as a child, which I quite liked!
Aondeag 12-08-2005, 02:48 PM Yes..yer man who played the oooompa loooooooooooompa is from Kenya or somewhere exotic like that.He was brill, as oomp loompa's go.
I would'nt be a fan of theirs but he was great.
I like the original film the best:Johnny Depp was fantastic in this, of course, coz he's brill always. Did'nt like the make up tho'.
But I just think there was an air of natural weirdness about the original which this one lacks slightly.
Thoroughly enjoyed it tho'.
Tasty!
I have to say I am so undecided about whether to go and see this. I love the original and I don't want to spoil it. So I don't know what to do. My boys love the original film too (cos thats all they've seen).
I know - I shall go and see the Fantastic Four first.....
Patsy 12-08-2005, 05:03 PM My kids have seen both, Buzzybeeeeeeeeeee. They loved the Fantastic Four. But they are totally different films. We saw C&TCF today and they really liked it, but it didn't have the wow factor for them, mainly I think because of their ages.
I thought it was really good, as good as the first, but different. Johnny Depp was fantastic and I thought the Oompa Loompa guy was great. Reminded me of Thing One and Thing Two in The Cat in the Hat.
The first one will always be special and "re-makes" are always touch and go, but I thought this one worked really well.
Right. I think once we have seen the fantastic four, I shall take them to see this new Charlie film....
Popsicle 21-08-2005, 08:43 PM My sister dragged me along to see the new "Charlie" and I was amused to note the entire cinema was filled with adults - not a child in sight! (OK, it was the later session )
I do like Johnny Depp, and he made a credible Willy Wonka, but I agree that the first film was more magical somehow.
Better special effects in the new version, but then there is no excuse not to be better these days.
I will give it 7/10 I think.
Minklemar 22-08-2005, 09:14 AM I'm going to go and see this last weekend. I love the original film, although I didn't think the actor who played Charlie was suited to the role.
I got the X-Box game for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory at the weekend and that kept me occupied for a few hours....although it's more of a kids game.
survivorfan 22-08-2005, 10:35 AM Saw this last week and loved it. I think Depp makes for a somewhat disturbing Wonka - edgy and sarcastic.
Visually the movie was a treat.
No need to compare it to the first - two directors, two interpretations.
I'd splash out a 10/10 on this one.
Voice of reason 22-08-2005, 10:39 AM Oh poo! It's not been released in New Zealand yet and I really want to see this :mad2:
Scooby 22-08-2005, 12:12 PM Don't bother - it's rubbish.
cheerio!

Oh dear! What didn't you like about it?
Scooby 22-08-2005, 02:18 PM Oh dear! What didn't you like about it?
I really didn't like Johnny Depp. I found the whole thing to be very glossy and visually beautiful but also rather flat and emotionless. I don't know, I was just really underwhelmed by the entire thing. Then again I have a bad habit of comparing remakes to their originals rather than on their own merits.
With that said, I worshipped the Oompa Loompa songs.
cheerio!
.

That's one thing I didn't like. I know the songs were taken from the book but I liked the old "Oompa loompa doompadee doo, I've got another puzzle for you...." songs.
Andrea 23-08-2005, 12:01 AM "Oompa loompa doompadee doo, I've got another puzzle for you...." songs.
Since watching the original film a few weeks ago with the kids, both my boys are constantly singing this all the time

I dunno Peej, what with that and Coldplay *shakes head sadly* ;)

.....
This is my worry too Buzzy.
We are going to the pics - not this weekend but the one after. Jack wants to see the Dukes of Hazard [for his birthday], so I said I would take tiddles to see Willy Wonka - but I so don't want to spoil the original.
And I am one of the few females on the planet who has never really 'got' Jonny Depp? So is it Willy Wonka or shall it be the Fantastic Four [which incidentally fills me with as much pleasure as a wet weekend in Bognor!]

Have to say Scoobs...I sort of enjoyed all the film (some of it was a bit to Tim Burton for me) but I peed my pants laughing at the ompah lompas and their songs.....I think I was laughing a little to loudly at one point though
Coastie 08-09-2005, 09:35 PM Did anyone else that watched this film sing alternative words to the opening 'Willy Wonka' song which greeted the children to the factory and was sung by those (Icouldn't watch the screen) dolls!
It was to the tune of a song we sang as kids which went along the lines of 'What a wanger (with a k instead of a g)....I swear whoever decided to use this tune a put in the name Willy Wonka has had to have known the other version of the song! :shocking:
JakeyBoy 10-09-2005, 04:50 PM I am going to go see it next week but I am quite afraid that I am going to hate it. I see the ads and Depp seems like a smart-ass and I don't like that (even though I am one!) I liked the old Wonka, he had something magical about him. The way he spoke was so, I can't put it in words. Also the new Charlie looks spastic. I will tell you what I think of it when I see it.
how dare you critisize Johnny Depp, how very dare you??????!!!!!!
He is gorgeous and I will be watching this movie (when its on DVD as I dont "do" cinemas where I cant smoke!!!!!) purely for the perv  :naughty:
JakeyBoy 11-09-2005, 04:45 AM I am not critising Depp I just think having Wonka as a smart-ass isn't good.
Also the new Charlie looks spastic.
Huh?
Not sure where you got that from but I thought the wee guy who played Charlie did a good job.
Bella 11-09-2005, 02:28 PM Huh?
Not sure where you got that from but I thought the wee guy who played Charlie did a good job.
Me too PJ, in fact I thought all the kids were really good compared to the child actors in Harry Potter, they were miles ahead. The wee boy that played Charlie.......forgotten his name , Freddie something also played with Johnny Depp in Finding Neverland.
And Wonka was a smartar3e in the original film too Jakeyboy! Depp is loads better that Gene Wilder but that's my opinion. Although I would say this is that although I think Depp's acting is superb, I didn't lust after him like I would normally do! :naughty:
JakeyBoy 12-09-2005, 12:42 PM wat i mean by dat is his head (on da ads and posters) looks all wonky and weird. and could u tell me how Gene Wilder was a smart-ass?
Bella 12-09-2005, 12:49 PM wat i mean by dat is his head (on da ads and posters) looks all wonky and weird. and could u tell me how Gene Wilder was a smart-ass?
You tell me first how the ads and the posters look all wonky & weird!
Voice of reason 12-09-2005, 08:47 PM I saw this on Sunday, and I still don't know if I liked it or not! Like Coastie I'm not keen on Tim Burton movies and some of this was 'trademark dark.'
To be honest I didn't see the point of re-making it, it wasn't that different or even that much better then the original.
