I really liked her, she was honest and she had this amazing ablility to laugh through her troubles. She will be greatly missed. :( Flip 19-08-2005, 07:34 AM It was reported this morning that Mo Mowlem has died. What sad news, she was only 55. Bella 19-08-2005, 07:36 AM Flip 2 minds think alike!! I just posted that too, maybe you could merge them together. :) Dolores 19-08-2005, 07:38 AM It is a shame when someone so relatively young dies. I think during her illness she was portrayed as a very brave woman in the media. i'm sure she gave a lot of hope to other sufferers. I have to say on the whole I found her an odd character with many contrasting facets to her personality (as portrayed in the media anyway!). RIP. Aondeag 19-08-2005, 07:51 AM RIP..that is sad.Her poor family. I thought she was a lovely woman, but a totally useless politician. (she was secretary of state for the north of Ireland. Not the easiest of jobs but she blundered her way through it.) I did not realise she was so ill. :-( Voice of reason 19-08-2005, 09:52 AM Gosh I hadn't heard this, what a shame. I read her autobiography in which she came across as a very straightforward no-nonesense kind of woman with a wicked sense of humour. I'm sure she'll be greatly missed by those that knew her. Edit: Threads merged :) ils 19-08-2005, 10:03 AM Very sad news ... R.I.P. Fee For All 19-08-2005, 10:09 AM Sad indeed - she always seemed quite jolly. Haydon 19-08-2005, 11:14 AM She's been staying at the hospice where my Mum works as a nurse. Mo was a very brave lady. I admire her. She always seemed approachable when you saw her on the News and came across as "normal" - unlike many other politicians. RIP Mo. Cat 19-08-2005, 11:18 AM Oh, thats a suprise - what did she die off? I loved her when she did the fly on the wall show with that tall chap in glasses (what was his name?). RIP Mo. Tigereye 19-08-2005, 12:44 PM Aw janey mack - poor auld mo. A good egg. RIP. Haydon 19-08-2005, 12:49 PM "Dr Mowlam previously suffered a benign brain tumour, and famously sported a blond wig during talks to revive the Northern Ireland peace process, after cancer treatment caused her to lose her hair." (quote from Guardian site) I think the tumour had come back. I never realised she was a Doctor. - I wonder what she was a Dr. of? Aondeag 19-08-2005, 01:03 PM Not sure. She got a PHD from the University of Iowa, and I think she lectured in the states for a while. But you gotta love somebody who ..much to his dismay..refers to david trimble as 'trimbly wimbly' to his face. :D :D :D Coastie 19-08-2005, 01:43 PM Shame...she was one of the few MP's I actually had some respect for. Dolores 19-08-2005, 03:33 PM But you gotta love somebody who ..much to his dismay..refers to david trimble as 'trimbly wimbly' to his face. :D :D :D actually you don't have to love her for that! I hate to be controversial but it is precisely her "imp-ish" sense of humour and sometimes sexist behaviour (towards male colleagues) which put me off Mo Mowlem. But maybe I'm just a stuffy old moaner who likes Politicians to take each other seriously? Flip 19-08-2005, 06:18 PM I hate to be controversial but it is precisely her "imp-ish" sense of humour and sometimes sexist behaviour (towards male colleagues) which put me off Mo Mowlem. But maybe I'm just a stuffy old moaner who likes Politicians to take each other seriously? Gosh I am a bit surprised at that Dol?? If I were David Trimble and someone called me Trimbly Wimbly I would be delighted - for the fun and amusement factor. Just like When David Dimbleby referred to Robin Cook as Mr Cock on live TV - Robin quick as a flash referred to David Dimbleby as Mr Bumblebee! A bit of political ribbing!!! IMO! Andrea 19-08-2005, 08:40 PM I think the tumour had come back. I heard today that she had fallen and had a brain injury. Apparently, her balance wasn't the best since the brain tumour and consequent treatment and she fell, hit her head and hadn't recovered consciousness since. I liked her. RIP Mo Mowlam. Rob 20-08-2005, 12:37 AM I'm really bummed out by this - first Robin Cook and now Mo Mowlam - two of the good guys. RIP Pandora 20-08-2005, 07:45 AM actually you don't have to love her for that! I hate to be controversial but it is precisely her "imp-ish" sense of humour and sometimes sexist behaviour (towards male colleagues) which put me off Mo Mowlem. But maybe I'm just a stuffy old moaner who likes Politicians to take each other seriously? Have to disagree Dol. I believe her whole attitude was because she herself had received such sexism herself in the past. Mo Mowlam's whole approach was to wrong foot people; especially pompous, self righteous, sexist, old school type colonial people. She did this on many occasions, especially during the Northern Ireland Peace Process where she wound up the particularly pompous Martin McGuinness of Sinn Fein, by calling him "babe" throughout a meeting. Of all the Secretaries of State of Northern Ireland, Mo Mowlam made progress the fastest. And that is from the mouth of John Prescott last night. So she mustve been doing something right eh? I actually met Mo Mowlam about six years ago. We had a new Stroke Rehabilitation Unit open at the hospital where I work and she was due to visit to open it. As usual, the Chief Executive was wheeled out, his Assistant Chief Executive, the Assistant to the Assistant etc, half a dozen Consultants who none of us had ever seen before. There were lots of rolling eyes on the ward as we knew that once Mo had visited, a lot of these people would simply disappear back into their Ivory Towers, probably washing their hands just in case they'd caught anything. Mo Mowlam appeared, the big-wigs all lined up smiling ingratiatingly and she smiled at them winningly, said "Hi there, how are you all..." then immediately turned away and said to the nearest Nurse, brightly, "Now then, where are the most important people? The nurses, doctors and the patients?.... lead me to 'em...." Cue dropped jaws and smirks of triumph from the incredibly hard working staff and delighted patients. Personally I think she was a breath of fresh air. A misfit if you like. She was too honest, too candid and too female to have got much further than Secretary of State to N.I., although if her illness hadnt have interrupted this particular post, who knows? A sad loss indeed. She was great. :wink_kiss karenh 20-08-2005, 05:00 PM Pandora - that was an incredible post. Very insightful and persuasive. Mo Mowlen. Hmmmm - like Dol, I didn't "take" to Mo Mowlem as a person the way that many others did. For lack of a better phrase, the "common man" really took her to their hearts. There were many things that I did like about her such as her honesty, her obvious desire to put things right and her courage. What I didn't like about her was the fact that she sometimes seemed to take pleasure in humiliating and ridiculing an opponent. It was a sometimes entertaining quality, but not a likeable one in any person. But that's politics. And its probably one of the reasons why I don't much like politicians as people. But, as a politician she was a breath of fresh air. She should never have been removed from her Secretary of State position in Northern Ireland. She - and she alone - basically set the framework for what is the (quite successful all things considered) peace process now in place. Her biggest sin as a politician was that she became too renowed and too successful. I mean, she was a woman for God's sake!!!!! Pesonally, I'm sorry she had died. The world of British politics will be an even more corrupt cesspit than it currently is. PJ 22-08-2005, 09:32 PM I must have been living on another planet for the last few days cos this is the first I've heard about this! That's a shame, I liked her. She always came across as ery down to earth. Rest in Peace, Mo. |
