Peej, twasn't meant to be bitchy at all. In what way do you find it bitchy?
There's nothing wrong with a flounce, I just didn't want to miss it if it was.
Sorry, perhaps it's just me then. But the way I read it, it sounded quite bitchy and patronising, as though you were making a mockery out of bridge leaving.
Sammboelyn 29-08-2006, 02:53 PM I thought it was just meant to bit a bit humerous (sp?) and to find out where Bridge is
I thought it was just meant to bit a bit humerous (sp?) and to find out where Bridge is
Yes, as I said, perhaps it's just me who saw it that way. No biggy.

Get out the wrong side of bed this morning PJ.........? :ill:
Err, no. Why do you think that Bella?
~ils~ 29-08-2006, 06:52 PM Sorry, perhaps it's just me then. But the way I read it, it sounded quite bitchy and patronising, as though you were making a mockery out of bridge leaving.
No, not just you PJ, I read it that way too
floopy 29-08-2006, 06:56 PM Wasn't meant to be that way, bridge, if you're out there. :wink_kiss
Patsy 29-08-2006, 07:06 PM It's ok. Wales is closed for the school holidays. She'll be back before you know it.
Personally, I never liked her anyway.................
survivorfan 17-09-2006, 09:32 AM Personally I can't see how 'Challenge others' points of view and opinions, but do so respectfully and thoughtfully ... without insult and personal attack' can be open to interpretation.
Had to re-visit the 'personal attack' issue after going to Somerfields this morning to buy some Kettle Chips* and browsing the Sunday newspapers while I was there.
Big front page headline on one of the more 'serious' Sundays (probably the Mail on Sunday):
POLICE INVESTIGATE CHERIE ATTACK ON BOY 17.
Then you read the article which says during a photo call at a school a boy was making rabbit ears behind Cherie Blair's head and she playfully turned round and waved him off, during which her hand touched his back. THat's it.
Does suggest that what constititutes an attack is definitely down to interpretation, and makes you wonder if the personal attacks often complained about on SO are more Cherie Blair than al Quaeda.
*added to give a human interest touch to the post.
Bella 17-09-2006, 10:45 AM I heard this story on the news and it was saying something along the lines that she was not going to be charged with child abuse!!! Talk about mountains and molehills!
Thing is if someone gets into their heads that they are being attacked then sometimes there is no budging them. It is a case of twisting the words to make something that was never there in the first place, a bit like the Cherie Blair story. Magazines do it all the time, they have these huge front-page headlines but when you open up the mag and read the actual story it's never what you imagined it to be.............I am desperately trying to think of one off-hand but brain is still half-asleep!
Fee For All 17-09-2006, 10:48 AM I heard that too, SF and it crossed m mind that had it been the sainted Diana and not Cherie, it would have been passed of as showing a playful side to her character.
I think that interpretation applies here too.
Patsy 17-09-2006, 01:02 PM However, there have been occasions when people have had a very obvious "go" at someone else and then tried to make out they have been "misinterpreted".
Coastie 17-09-2006, 02:19 PM Well Pats I can honestly say I meant it when I called you a flactulating old moo bag! :naughty:
Patsy 17-09-2006, 05:16 PM Your sincerity is definitely your most attractive feature, Coastie.
Coastie 17-09-2006, 05:34 PM Your sincerity is definitely your most attractive feature, Coastie.

Patsy 17-09-2006, 05:37 PM Maybe if you shaved them?
Coastie 17-09-2006, 05:39 PM but braided hair is so much cheaper than having to pay out for real tassels...:w00t:
Tigereye 19-09-2006, 02:33 PM ok, that's a visual I could have done without.....
survivorfan 24-09-2006, 05:54 PM May I register a complaint about the over-abundant use of so-called 'smilies'. In fact haydon, please get rid of them.
This is the one that annoys me most
Especially when someone makes a 'quip' and follows it with a
It's as bad as laughing at your own jokes which is a social no-no.
Even worse is when it's used after a 'jibe' just to show 'I was only joking'. Cowardly.
The trouble is it's become so overused that way, that when someone makes a 'jibe' in an 'only joking' way without it then it's taken as being snide.
H ere's another one I don't like. And this :evilmad:
Haydon get rid of them and make everyone use words instead. Or would that make people  ?
Ironically, the forum wouldn't let me save my original\ post because it had six smilies in it so I had to get rid of one of them. That's another moan.

I like the smilies. They help to convey the tone of the whole post.
So, if I wrote, for example...
F*** off SF, you utter nonce
...with no smilies after it, you'd probably read it and imagine that I'm saying it in an angry, p*ssed-off tone.
However, if I wrote...
F*** off SF, you utter nonce
...the whole tone of the post completely changes and it now looks and sounds as though I'm having a laugh with you and not really meaning it.
See?

Thanks for pointing that out Groucho!
survivorfan 25-09-2006, 08:38 AM And then there are those cunning swines who mean the dig then add a sh*t-eating grin to rub it in - but of course they can always say it meant they were joking. Very popular tactic on an alternative board whose name I won't mention.

The problem is in the attitude, not in the use of smileys. As you know, there's plenty of ways of being snide or unpleasant.
Actually I don't understand your objection to smileys. They can convey information better than words sometimes. At worst they're only a waste of space, but then many words are really a waste of space too. Are you seeking to control how people express themselves?
survivorfan 29-09-2006, 02:03 PM Are you seeking to control how people express themselves?
Can't really can I? Isn't that a job for Forum Police? People like, ooh, I dunno ... Oh yes! People like you Mik!
(and look, all done without smileys)
Patsy 29-09-2006, 06:20 PM Swerve, I feel somehow challenged to change your views on smileys. They are our friends and should be encouraged. survivorfan 29-09-2006, 06:44 PM Entertaining but of limited use. It hasn't won me over.
Look, what is it about these damned smileys. In the old fashioned days of typewriters, platens, snopake and DOS we didn't have them and everyone could express themselves just fine.
And Mik, as far as them conveying information better than words, hey, let's forget talking, lets all carry a pack of smiley cards and hold an assortment in front of our face to save having to speak.
And Mik, if you can't understand why I don't like smilies despite what I've said, I guess you may have proved me wrong and I should have used the bloody things to get my message across.

But that's the point, SF. When you're having a face-to-face conversation with someone, you can temper what you are saying with facial expressions. And quite often in conversation, a facial expression or gesture, can replace a comment.
Similarly, when talking on the telephone, you use tone of voice to help convey meaning.
A finely crafted letter can convey the intended meaning, but to produce these take time and care - this is a message board, and responses tend to be quicker. I look on it as a written conversation!
Communication moves with the times, and I think message-board writing is a developing form in its own right.
I like smilies, and using silver writing to indicate an aside, because they go some way in replicating the body language, expressions and tone that accompany normal conversation.
Imagine how boring a conversation would be with some bland, expressionless individual who spoke in monotone?
I can't believe I'm having a serious conversation about a little yellow blob:w00t:
