Following on from my thread in the TV section, what is the worst thing you have ever eaten ????

Did you intentionally eat it, or was it disguised in some way ?

For me it has to be eel. I cant stand the taste of it. Someone gave me a dish with different fish in it, and i stuck this bit of eel in my mouth and nearly heaved. It was sooooo revolting.

Ive also eaten a maggot or two in the past, when i have looked down at a peach and seen half a maggot waving at me

Oh, and has anyone here ever eaten a fly ? I have, and i didnt just swallow it like any normal person who had found a fly in the back of her throat ...... no, i managed to cough it back up, and squish it between my teeth - god it was revolting. It tasted acidy.

I was once in a position where I had to eat something which I totally loathed. Salmon mousse  Mr V and I were very young and had just got engaged when we were invited to one of his consultant's houses for a meal with the whole medical team. It was a very very posh affair and I was over-awed by the array of cutlery as much as anything else! Anyway, the first course turned out to be salmon mousse, which I hate, but I was way too afraid to confess and say I didn't like it so managed to force down a plateful, but only with the aid of half a loaf of brown bread and gallons of water!

I was very sick once we got home

When, back in the day, I lived in the jungle, we had to eat processed cheese. This cheese, bear in mind, was the only thing to survive when one of the Trekforce buildings burnt down a few years ago. It was exceptionally vile.

I ate a lot of spam, which turned out to be quite nice. My family in my village didn't give me anything too strange, although a few of my friends got given armadillo (equipped with shell) and iguana, Apparently iguana tastes a bit like fish, with a chicken consistency.

cheerio!

Just don't make me eat tinned pears...

When on an aid trip to Yugoslavia I visited a village and was served some soup.....in the soup was a chickens claw! It's the first time I have ever been afraid of food and I nibbled round the claw and found out later that this is actually a treat and given to the guest of honor....

Weirdest thing I've probably eaten is duck brain.....had it when I was in China...as they give you the ENTIRE duck on a platter when they serve it to you. It really didn't have much of a taste tho and was kind of mushy in consistency.

Once when I was in Turkey I tried sheep brains.....I can't recall the tase but it had a very grainy consistancy. I was also offered an eyeball, but I turned that down.

I can't really bring myself to talk about this ... but since you're asking!!!

Last night I was tucking into some Kettle Chips/Crisps and I came across a soggy bit so I spat it out and chucked it away thinking it was just an uncooked crisp ... so i dug in for another handful (I don't get put off easily!!) and I pulled out what looked like a twice baked, high quality centipede!! I screamed and chucked it back in the bag and chucked the bag away.

It's still in my bin but I'm too scared to get it out and have a look ... I feel sick thinking about it and I'd rather not confirm my fears of what it was. On the plus side I have amazingly gone a whole day without eating crisps!!

I wonder if someone wuold put a centipede in my vodka so I don't drink anymore!!!

I had a very big, black insect type chap in some grapes from Asda once. I'd eaten most of the pack before I noticed it..............they changed the bag quite happily but it had already put me off big time! Yuck

LMAO...

It's always hard when you find nasties in food because if you complain to the company they send you vouchers and/or crappy cook book which tells you what to do with their products.....if you complain to trading standards you have to prove that the offending item was in the goods before you opened it so they can take it further....basically it's hardly worth the effort most of the time....

My mum had a metal bag ties in a BIRDS EYE lasagne once and it dug into her cheek...fortunately she wasn't hurt but when she complained to the company they sadi that there was no way that the bag tie could have got into their product before it was open since they do not use such ties in any part of their production....

My brother nearly broke a tooth on a stone in a tin of CROSS & BLACKWELL baked beans....they sent a crappy leaflet like cook book and a note saying sorry hope your son is ok.....

I complained about a hair in my stifado in a resaurant in Ayia Napa once.......and the owner told me 'it's not ours....the chef is bald!'

I'm sure he thought I'd put the hair in myself to get a free meal - I didn't go back there again!

Sorry but it is very funny.

Other stuff ...? Well I cannot think of anything too outlandish probably cos I generally like anything - and am not afraid to try things at least once.

Totally agree - squid is like chewing a rubber band - YUK.

I think the worst thing I ever tried to eat was a Salad dressing that my bruv and s-i-l served up. There isn't much that I don't like or won't eat but this particular dressing had some sort of cheese base (it was a bottled variety - maybe Heinz). I took a mouthful and my stomach did a somersault. I tried to eat another but it tasted like what my stomach was about to produce.

Embarrassingly I had to scrape it off my plate along with everything it was on.
My brother and s-i-l said they weren't keen on it but they managed to eat theirs but there was just no way I could eat it out of politeness.

My grandmother dished up tripe and onions once. We weren't allowed to get down from the table until we had been deemed to have eaten enough.

I was there for hours, weeping.

And I still gag at the memory of being made to drink a bottle of school milk by a vindictive teacher who didn't believe in allergies. Ha!! Boy did she suffer the consequences of that

The worst thing I've ever eaten besides hospital food...is nutrarat. It is a swamp rat and I did not eat it on purpose!! Mr. M and I had gone with some friends to this cookout with a bunch of redneck hicks doing the cooking. Someone put it on my plate and told me to try it. It tasted beyond awful and I spit it out right there. I demanded to know what it was. The guy had wandered off by then but our friends found out the next day and called me at work but I wasn't at my desk, so one of my co-workers (all guys I worked with) took the message and had a big laugh for a while. When it got cold and the mice and rats came in the building and got caught on the traps they made a big deal of asking did I want to cook it for supper. I make sure I know what I eat nowadays!!!

oh god a whole new thread ... "what dinner ladies made you eat"!!!

I remember sitting there crying all on my own in the dining hall with a doughnut in front of me of which I'd had one bite and hated. That bitch of a dinner lady made me sit there for the rest of the dinner break until I'd eaten it, I was sobbing (how cruel are dinner ladies!) for about half an hour, in the end another nice dinner lady (for there was such a creature!) came up and took it off of me and chucked it in the bin and told me to go outside. On my way out all I could hear was the nasty dinner lady shouting at the nice dinner lady for being soft with me!

I also remember a boy being made to eat processed peas which he hated, he too was crying and kept dribbling them out, but they still made him sit there til he'd eaten them!

Oh yes! Our school dining hall was a very traumatic place with lots of tears!

We always had to drink a small bottle of milk when i was at infant school every morning. The trouble was, the milk was just left standing in the sun all morning, and then we had to drink it. Im sure it was off - but as a kid we werent sure.

I put me off drinking milk forever

Oh, ive just remembered one other gross thing i 'almost' ate.

It was from Iceland about 8 years ago. It was very rare that i shopped there, but i went in one day and saw this frozen beef stew in a bag. Brilliant i thought - i love beef stew and its a quick and easy dinner.

So i put it in the pan and started to cook it for dinner that evening. Well - the smell was out of this world. It smelt of poo. Mr.B turned up, and couldnt even walk in the house it was that bad !!!! I looked in the pan, and not only did it smell of poo it looked like it too. We promptly turned on our heels and went to get a MacDonalds to eat in the car.

You know, my house smelt of that vile stuff for about a week

I think the worst thing I have ever eaten was Cauliflower cheese. An ex's mother cooked a roast dinner and the cauliflower cheese she served up was swimming in water and it was just disgusting. I used to hate the thought of anchovies....... until I ate one and now I absolutely love them.

We regularly used to have creamed sheep's brains on toast on a Sunday evening. Loads of black pepper, very tasty. Love hearts too. Don't like liver, but only because of the taste.

I've never had a bad bug-related experience, but the biggest shock I got was taking a gulp of what I thought was thick pink grapefruit or tomato juice and it was actually guava. Revolting. Oh, and sterilised milk.

Oh, and avocado ice cream! Made by a chinese lady. She made this fantastic chinese meal with several courses, finished off by avocado ice cream. Had to eat it to be polite. My MIL had seconds!

Patsy - sheep's brains, urgh the very thought! Although I do eat and love haggis and I just never, ever think what is in it!!

Mr B hates anything green as when he was a child he was made to eat them and he would have to put them in his mouth and wash them down with his milk!

Went to the Zoo today, it was Austrailian Day as 2 gorgeous, cute & cuddly Koala Bears have just arrived! We didn't exactly get Austrailian weather so we went into the Mansion House to get a Hot Chocolate with Maltesers and Whipped Cream - it was soooooo disapppointing when it arrived - no whipping cream and 2 measly maltesers floating at the top and it was cold!!! I sent it back and it was returned after being blasted in the microwave- £1.70 it cost me!!!

All in a single meal in Guangzhou China, one course was 3-snake soup (not that bad actually), but the one that got me was pigs ears. They looked, tasted, and chewed like rubber bands. I was visiting the loo hourly for three days after, but not sure what part caused it.
