View Full Version : Names
jaycee 27-08-2005, 11:37 AM This is inspired by the baby names topic Cat has insisted we discuss in her thread.
Do you like your own name? What would you have preferred to have been called?
My full name is French & learning to spell it at school was not easy. I SO wanted to be called Ann!
Patsy 27-08-2005, 11:40 AM Well come on then. What is it?
jaycee 27-08-2005, 11:41 AM Well come on then. What is it?
Jacquelyn..........
sorry forgot to add that before, got distracted
I like my first name as it can be shortened to loads of other names- including Bob!
I din't like my middle name [mary] when i was at school as people always asociated this with being a virgin and a member of the God Squad. But I don't mind it at all now.
I don't like my confirmation name as my mother chose it in honour of a old lady from church.
My surname is too long
Jaycee I'm intregued to know what your name is.
Is it Colette by any chance?
We had a Colette in our class at scholl and she was known by the nickname one L and 2 T's as no one could ever spell her name and she kept yelling this at folk
Jacquelyn..........
sorry forgot to add that before, got distracted
Doh to me! I knew that was your name from PMs
I'm silly sometimes
jaycee 27-08-2005, 11:50 AM I'd have preferred Colette
no-one ever gets it right - everyone puts Jacqueline. Even my marriage certificate says Jacqueline & I had to send my passport back to be corrected even though I had written Jacquelyn on the form!
I'm happy with my name - at least the shortened version.
My brother, however, was christened Alan - everybody now knows him as Max!
Jacquelyn..........
sorry forgot to add that before, got distracted
Were you distracted or just being cruel?
When I used to read Enid Blytons Mallory Towers I was desperate to be called Alicia, I thought it was so classy.
But on the whole I can't complain about my name really, quite comfortable with it.
Critique 27-08-2005, 12:42 PM My real name is Ann (I thought my parents could have at least put an "e" on the end - no middle name either). I hated it and thought it too plain. I wanted to be a "Victoria" or "Vicky" and I envied a girl at school who was called "Zelda" and another called "Rhoda" - much more exotic than plain old Ann.
When I started work there were 5 other Ann's working in the same Department so my boss told me choose another name. I chose Mandy and have been known as Mandy ever since. I liked it when I was younger but now I feel like "the oldest Mandy in Town"
jaycee 27-08-2005, 01:05 PM Were you distracted or just being cruel?
No I was distracted - the dog was sick on the carpet  he obviously doesn't like wholemeal pitta bread
Patsy 27-08-2005, 01:15 PM I used to hate my name when I was younger, especially the full version, but I quite like being called Patricia now. In fact, I think it's quite pretty. Pat is so....... well....... sudden. And it rhymes with fat, which I was and still think I am. Patsy was my childhood name and I still like it.
Andrea 27-08-2005, 01:34 PM I'm quite happy with my name.
In my son's year at school there are two boys with the same first name, so one of them is called John and the other uses his surname so he is called John Smith, even to all the kids.
My son comes home and says "I played with John Smith today"
It's funny to hear
(note names changed to protect the innocent, well actually the John Smith is not so innocent, he can be a little sod sometimes :w00t: )
I dislike my name as it is so common, there were 5 of us with the same name in my year at school, although I don't mind being called Susie..

My brothers name is John Smith.
I quite like being called Patricia now.
Oh you do do you.
Patsy 27-08-2005, 01:42 PM 'ave it..........
jaycee 27-08-2005, 01:55 PM There is a bloke at work called Chris but there are 3 Chris' in his circle of friends so they all call him Taylor which is his surname.
We went out recently & some of his friends joined us & we were all calling him Chris & they were all calling him Taylor & the other Chris' were answering when we wanted him..............it all got very confusing & the more wine consumed, the worse it got. I think someone got very frustrated and resorted to 'Oi you' at one stage..............!
mazwad 27-08-2005, 02:28 PM I don't mind my name now although I hated being called Mare as a child. always fancied the name Rachel but not keen on it now. One of my middle names is Maud and I hate it I leave it out of any but the most official types of paperwork.
Dolores 27-08-2005, 02:35 PM I've never really had strong feelings about my name one way or the other, it's Christine.
Most people call me Chris which I quite like. But yes, you're right Jacye there are often a few Chris's in a crowd it seems, although i'm usually the only girl Chris.
I did use to get upset cos I didn't have a middle name but my parents thought my first name was quite long and my surname is quite complicated and difficult to say, so she thought a middle name would only complicate things further. It's not fair my brother and sister both have middle names! And it's not even as though she got fed up with the third child having a middle name cos I'm the middle child and ... it's just not fair!
I didn't give my son a middle name either ... i wonder if he will end up resenting me for it! I think middle names are just showing off anyway!
I think middle names are overrated. I hate mine and never use it unless I have to on official documents.
All my children have one middle name which their dad chose as I didn't really care what they were (as I don't think they are important) as long as they didn't sound silly with their first or surname or the initials didn't spell something daft or rude.
Andrea 27-08-2005, 02:50 PM Actually talking about initials, I'm doing a small, dare I say it, cross stitch :w00t: picture for a friend who is getting married soon.
It has both their initials on it.
She is called Belle and he is called Stuart.
Perhaps I should put Stuarts initial first
I have a middle name - but I think it was put in to appease my maternal grandparents and I was named after my dad's father!
My wife's name is Marian and she was named after both her parents - Margaret and Ian

lol! we have a crap manager at work and her initials are BS ... makes me smile everytime
...PS: was that on their gift list then Andrea?

Oy missus, some people like cross stitch :ninja: :boxing:
Well, when I was born I was called Gary for the frist few weeks! Then my parents decided to change it to Paul, as you do. I don't mind my name although it's very common and plain. But to many, I am of course known as PJ.
My mum always says she wished she had called me Nathan.
If I was a girl, I would have been called Sinead!! Thank God I turned out to have a penis.
Patsy 27-08-2005, 04:05 PM I quite like middle names, although mine is very boring. I think it gives someone another option if they don't like their first name. My BIL is known by his given middle name.
What a very very interesting thread. Isn't it funny what we think about names and how our opinions change over time?
My maiden name was Walker, and my fave character was Titty Walker in Swallows and Amazons - so I continually asked my Mum to call me Titty - she obviously said NO. [actually Titty's big sister was called Susan]
I am a Susun, and I now quite like it, I was only ever called it if I was naughty - and as a child always got Suzi or Suki [still do]. Up until recent years I HATED my middle name and now I really quite like it, just like you Bob I am a Mary. [btw I had to laugh at your name as described Bobble - it sounds like your called Bob Mary Toolong!!!]
If I had been a boy I was going to be called Adrian - sorry any Adrian's but urghhh!! Although Adrienne for a girl is gorgeous, although if I had to choose a name for myself it would be Phillipa [shortened to Pippa]. That isn't too far off Flip - is it??

It could have been worse PJ, you could have been a girl called Sinead and still had a penis
Bella 27-08-2005, 04:51 PM I was going to be called Maxine as my nana's maiden was Maxwell but in the end they went for Karen as my mum's maiden name was McLaren and my middle name is Lynn after my papa's middle name Lindsay. Karen was hugely popular in the late 60's/70's but it's a name you never hear now. :(
What I don't like with middle names is when you have about 3 or 4 and they are all surnames after Great Aunt Peggy or some other relative of little significance.
And I absolutely hate double-barrelled names, what is the point of them!??
jaycee 27-08-2005, 05:08 PM Oy missus, some people like cross stitch :ninja: :boxing:
I used cross stitching to keep my hands occupied when I gave up smoking - still quite like it, very relaxing but I don't get much time to do it these days.
I with Andrea - cross stitchers of the world unite!
I'll get me coat.................. :bag:
msgirl 28-08-2005, 12:18 AM My middle name is Estella, which I hated to absolute pieces till just recently. Now I kinda wish I was called "Stella". Of course it could have been worse...I come from the land of "Billy-Bob" and "BettyLou", so I'm am very lucky with the name I did end up with. msgirl
Bonsai 28-08-2005, 08:04 AM Im a Nicola, and i hate it. I have always been known as Nikki, although my sister still insists after all these years on spelling it Nicki. My dad doesnt even know how to spell my name ... and its not exactly hard. He has smashing hand writing, and on an odd occasion when younger he would write out important things for me, and always spelt my name Nichola :wink2:
My dad chose my name. My mum wanted to call me Tabitha or Samantha as Bewitched was her fav programe. I wouldnt of minded Tabitha as i could of been called Tabby which would of been nice really.
I have a middle name .... its Jayne.
I always said if i had a child, and he was a boy i would of called him Seth. Mr.B hates it and said no child of his would be named after Seth Armstrong from Emmerdale, but i picked it up from 'City of Angels' with Nic Cage as he was called Seth ...... and since then i have noticed a few gorgeous hunks being called it.
Critique 28-08-2005, 09:25 AM Names are funny aren't they? People always like to abbreviate them or add a "Y" sound on the end as a sort of affectionate form.
My 9 yr old grandaughter is called Hannah. You can't do much with that but I've heard my son say "come on Hanny-Panny"
My little 6 yr old grandaughter is called Faye. I quite like it but it's very "abrupt" and there's no way of making it into a pet name - you can't shorten it or add "y" on the end. They got round it though, they call her Fay-fay
My son wasn't impressed when I suggested that her second name could be Leah - you have to say it to get why he wasn't amused "Faye Leah".
