View Full Version : Pride & Prejudice
Patsy 07-09-2005, 08:38 AM Seeing as I've already overtaken PJ's Red Eye thread, I thought I would give P&P it's own home.
How do you feel about P&P/Jane Austen. Love it? Hate it? Ambivalent?
Bella 07-09-2005, 08:49 AM Is this where I hang my head in shame? I have never seen a Pride & Prejudice film and neither have I read the book!
I do quite fancy seeing the new film though!
Patsy 07-09-2005, 09:00 AM Prostrate yourself in shame woman! Go and see it immediately and report to me in my study. :smartie:
mikado 07-09-2005, 11:53 AM I love Jane Austen's books. There have been some great film versions, like "Emma" with Gwynneth Paltrow, and "Sense & Sensibility" with Emma Thompson. The P&P tv series was very good.
The new film sounds good - hopefully I'll get to see it sometime.
Bella 07-09-2005, 11:59 AM Oh gawd, maybe it is me, I really disliked Sense & Sensibility and didn't like Emma at all, but I think that was more to do with Gwyneth Paltrow. I fell asleep during Remains of The Day and Howard's End done nothing for me........maybe I should give P&P a miss!
mikado 07-09-2005, 12:14 PM BELLA I'M APPALLED! :o "Remains of the Day" was a brilliant film (damn good book too).
Bella 07-09-2005, 12:31 PM BELLA I'M APPALLED! :o "Remains of the Day" was a brilliant film (damn good book too).
Oh, I know it was shocking the only reason I woke up was because the man next to me fell asleep on my shoulder and began to snore very loudly!!! :bag:
Patsy 07-09-2005, 12:36 PM I loved The Remains of the Day too, Mik (film, not book. Don't do books very often.)
Critique 14-09-2005, 03:46 PM I don't know if I will want to see this new version - I'm still lusting after the original Mr. Darcy and I didn't like the look of the new one at all.
Maybe I will go and get meself an OAP cheap seat and give it a try.
Patsy 14-09-2005, 06:08 PM The original Mr D'Arcy, Crit? Do you mean Colin Firth (last TV series) or Larry Olivier (1930s ish film)? Actually, of the two, I'd prefer Larry O. He was one of the most handsome men ever, IMO. I'm not that fussed on Colin Firth at all.
Having seen so many versions and read the book umpteen times, his looks weren't dark and brooding enough and, like Officer and a Gentleman, only "that" scene had a whooooarrrrrr factor for me.
From what I've seen of the clips with Matthew McFaddyen, he looks like he could be a good choice. And his monotone clipped voice is actually very well suited to the part.
I don't know if I will want to see this new version -
Ah - but the new one's got Keira Knightley in it

Well you damn well should, the film was good but the book was great.
The book is ALWAYS better - your imagination has control.
Patsy 14-09-2005, 07:35 PM But reading makes me tired. I think if I'd read that book, I would have been asleep within seconds. I think, in this instance, the film suited me best, thank you very much.

I have to admit, Patsy, that I've never seen the Laurence Olivier version. I'd like to though because, as you say, he was very handsome but Colin Firth did it for me  Not just "that" scene but I couldn't get enough of him. Wasn't so keen on him in Bridget Jones though - it's definitely characters I like and not film stars.
Ah - but the new one's got Keira Knightley in it
I know Keira Knightley is generally thought of as beautiful but, although I admit she's pretty she seems to have "vampire" teeth - lol. A bit off-putting.
I might make my second visit to the cinema in about 5 years and give it a whirl though. :)
(In case you're wondering it was Phantom of the Opera that drew me in last time and I wasn't impressed with that. In fact, someone lent me the DVD afterwards and I played the original Phantom music on the cassette player and watched the film at the same time. Much better  )
Patsy 14-09-2005, 07:59 PM I hated the stage version, Crit, so never even ventured to the cinema!
Here's LO as Heathcliffe in Wuthering Heights (doesn't do him justice, IMO).

Critique 14-09-2005, 11:28 PM Oh I love that film Patsy - I've watched that one over and over and even though they stopped it in the middle (as far as the book goes) I still think it's one of the best versions I've seen.
I always cry when he carries her to the window and then she dies

Well I didn't know who she was before, but from that picture she looks really pretty to me.

She was in Pirates of the Caribbean, Bend it Like Beckham, Love Actually to name but a few.........I like her, she is very pleasing to the eye and quite down to earth when she does interviews.

I haven't seen the 1st two but now you have said Love Actually, I do remember her from that, I just didn't know what her name was! Very pretty!

I'm a woman - if I can't win an argument fair and square I cheat :naughty:

I have never read the book and I have never watched the movie, but as soon as I realised that Tom (Spooks) was in it I knew I would have to watch it :naughty: not that I am shallow or anything :w00t:

  he is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo "all that" :naughty:
Patsy 18-09-2005, 03:05 PM The last P&P TV series has just started on UK Gold+. Looking forward to seeing "that" scene. :w00t:
But you can never get the stain out.
Patsy 20-09-2005, 08:18 PM Watched the whole blummin lot. Marvellous it was.
It's on again now on BBCThree. And it's "that" episode. :w00t:

Having never seen P & P, what is "that" episode all about? Does Mr Darcy get downright filthy?! :naughty:
Critique 20-09-2005, 10:22 PM Actually, Bella, no - quite the opposite - he dives into a lake and comes out clean and dripping wet and looking "phwoar"

who is this man? he looks very like a landlord of pub where I worked and shagged!!! Only shagged the landlord not generally shagged the customers you understand ... althogh come to think of it......!!!!!:naughty:
I watched the 2 episodes on last night - bereft of any reality show to tickle my fancy - and really enjoyed them again. Fortunately for me the second show was that :naughty: one.
I like Colin Firth as an actor but I'm afraid he does nothing for me, apart from when he walked out the lake dripping wet, hair all dangly, boots squelching. But because of this it would be impossible to have any sort of relationship...if I only fancied him dripping wet the more poor man would die of pneumonia after a time - well a few times anyway.
Colin does nice better than scowl.
But with a pad like that I would probably be able to over look this, and there would be a lake to hand I suppose.
The Mr Darcy in my head is the best one.
Alison Steadman rocks in this - as always - who's playing Mrs Bennet in the film then.
Aondeag 21-09-2005, 02:55 PM I read all the jane austen's in my youth ...and LOVED them.
But now i'm older i have so many problems with them.
(like..they are just so flippant....and the men are such wuss's...
taking turns around the pump house and playing cards when there was fighting to be done....boo! The men were always too girly for me.
All the books are very predictable, and you can always figure out which laydee will end up with which gent.
They are rather patronising towards the 'lower classe's too.
I LOVE Colin Firth, but I don't like the charachter of mr darcy.
He was just rude. And also...yer man wot dumped elizabeths sister jayne because darcy told him to!!!!! And she took him back when darcy decided it was all right!!!!
If I were jane...I would be soooooooooooooo mad and i would not take him back...no matter how many thousands a year he earned.
I will go and see the new pride and prejudice, but I am not expecting it to be as good as the Colin Firth/Jennifer Ehle (sp?) version.
Patsy 21-09-2005, 03:12 PM Alison Steadman rocks in this - as always - who's playing Mrs Bennet in the film then.
I, too, love Alison Steadman, although she will always be "Beverly" to me.
Brenda Blethyn(sp?) is playing Mrs B in the film and I think she'll be excellent. She's played similar contemporary roles in other films, i.e. neurotic and shallow. I think she's perfect.
Not sure about Donald Sutherland as Mr B though. I love him, but out of all the quintessential English actors they could have chosen, they chose a gargantuan Canadian! Why?

"I like Demis Roussos, Tony likes Demis Roussos and Ange likes Demis Rousos- Laaaaawrence, we want Demis Roussos, PLEASE! He's great isn't he Sue, yeah? Have some more peanuts Sue. Now another little drinky anyone?"
Classic :)
Patsy 21-09-2005, 08:05 PM "Ange. Next time you're putting your lipstick on, will you do something for me? Take your lipstick, look at yourself in the mirror and say - I have got very beautiful lips."
That's it, lovely!
borneobabe 25-09-2005, 11:14 PM I was intrigued to see what the latest movie version would be like considering like thousands of others, I can virtually transcribe the entire script from the TV series word for word. The cinematography in this latest movie is spectacular, Kiera Knightly does an admirable job as Elizabeth Bennett, but I can never get away from the fact that she has a body like an 11 year old underfed girl, compared to Jennifer Ehle's mammoth puppies !!! Matthew Mac Fayden's Darcy is not bad at all, he is a very handsome guy, but lets face it, he will never win the battle for who is the best Darcy. I found the portrayal of the relationship between the Bennett parents much more interesting in the movie. They came across as a real couple with real affection in spite of all Mrs Bennett's hysterics and she portrayed with great success the genuine need of the time to make sure daughters are married off and married off well, for the well being of the entire family. Mr. Collins character as far I am concered will never be beaten by anyone other than David Bamber in the TV series, and yet it was one of the more enjoyable characters in the movie, played with great humour. Likewise, the character of Lady Catherine De Burgh was sensationally portrayed in the TV series, and was in my opinion barely focused on in the movie and played by Judi Dench. With the tv series, we had several weeks to get to know the characters, and yet the movie tries to condense all of that down to about an hour and a half, which I found worked to its disadvantage... the time for characater developed was minimal. What I did not like about the movie also was the portrayal of Mr. Bingley's character as something of a fool and bafoon unlike the nice guy portrayal in the tv series. Other characters developed extensively in the tv series and hardly touched on in the movie were Lydia and Wickham. What I will credit the movie with are the dance scenes which are spectacular and so full of energy and life. Overall, I am glad I saw the movie, but I wont be adding it to my DVD collection in time, rather, i will be making sure Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle get an airing every now and then just to remind us all what a slow burning romance is all about.
Patsy 26-09-2005, 09:54 AM What an enjoyable read, BB. I am going to see this tonight and, although I know they can't go into such detail, suspected that they would go for the greatest cinematographic aspect.
Still looking forward to it, though.
Patsy 26-09-2005, 10:12 PM Loved the filming, didn't like Keira Knightly as Elizabeth - far too pretty and not diffident enough. I agree with everything BB said.
Two things affected me particularly. Mr Bennett's emotional response to Elizabeth following Darcy's proposal............... and Darcy walking through the mist at dawn ......
Oh, and a third. They didn't kiss. Don't care what the book says, not interested. I NEEDED them to kiss. :mad2:
Overall, I'm glad I've seen and can recommend it to anyone who likes a period drama and hasn't seen the BBC series.
Edit to say: Clive may be replaced by Matthew. I'm still mulling over that one.
