View Full Version : Spoiler - Episode 8 "Confidence Man" E4 Viewers Only
THis episode came up with my favourite bit of dialogue from the series so far
Sayid " Let me make him talk I served in the National Guard" (or something like that)
Dr Jack "I thought you were a communications officer"
Sayid " One of the things I learned was how to make the enemy communicate"
Brilliant!
Minklemar 16-09-2005, 10:16 AM At the beginning when Sayer was supposed to be in the nude you could see the top of his pants!! What a cheat!
Thank goodness Sayer does wear suits very often - he looked awful suited and booted!
Again we saw way too much of Kate and the doc, but we did get to see more of the pregnant girl....I like her and Charlies relationship.
I like the scenes with Charlie and Harley too 'I'm a big guy...it's gonna be a while before you're giving me piggy backs' that made me laugh.
Shannon and Boone....do I suspect a little brother/sister romance going on there - something not right with their relationship anyway.

I agree Mink, Kate is begining to bore me as is Captian Jack!
I just love Charlie, he is so adorable I just want to give a great big hug!
Looking forward to seeing Hurley's story I just hope that Kate butts out of that one!
And yes, I also think there is more to Boone & Shannon than meets the eye!
Also with Sun becoming involved in the camp more with Michael, her husband (whose name I can't remember) is not at all pleased.
Enjoyed Sawyer's story though and it does give an insight into why he is behaving bad and it shows that he does have a nice side to him, and that it is all just bravado. I hope as time goes on he loses that huge chip in his shoulder,Sayid has already helped by taking a chunk of it!
Anyone else think it strange that out of all the stories so far Sawyer's didn't explain why he was on a plane from Australia - or did I miss something?

Oh! I hadn't noticed that! Maybe he's a 2-parter and we'll get to see the rest of his story in another episode - I hope so anyway!
choti 20-09-2005, 10:36 AM I thought this was the best one recently, after going off the boil post Locke´s story. Sawyer's an interesting character and the whole torture question was well dealt with. Although I would have liked the buddha of surburbia to ahng around rather than walking away. However I'm still amazed that noone has mentioned either the monster or the polar bear for at least 5 episodes. What's the point of puttin these things in if you then ignore them?
choti 20-09-2005, 10:41 AM Just ermebered this after reading about the previous episode. Does anyone think Locke was a bit too eager to present the case against Sawyer to Sayed?
This made me suspect that Locke might have been the one to hit Sayed - i think someone suggested it in the moth episode discussion. After all Locke doesn´t want to leave the island - he may not be able to walk if he does - and also knows something about the beast that he hasn't told anyone. Maybe the theory about him being a spy has some credence.
Dolores 22-09-2005, 07:40 AM It's gradually getting worse and worse isn't it!
I know some of you ladies have said you fancy Sawyer, but come on let's face it the guy is a TERRIBLE actor!
Last night's story was laughable, so thinly plotted and badly written.
My friend at work has told me not to watch it if all I'm gonna do is mock and criticise it!!! She has no idea how I get my kicks does she!!!

No idea at all

I'd agree with you there Dol, only I'm inclined to think that he does the best with a poor part.
His character is really one dimensional and undeveloped. He doesn't get the oppotunity to display any other "side" than brooding, smouldering anger. And he's not the only character that is one-dimensional either. The same could be said of Sayid and Jack - particuarly Jack, who is so good and noble that it makes me want to puke sometimes. I wish he'd just lose his temper or take a dump in the sea or something.
The characters who tend to be the most interesting are those that are main characters, but take a less central role. The likes of Locke, Sun and Charlie. you sense that there is much more to them than meets the eye.
That said, I do think Sawyer is darned FIT!

Not sure I saw a nice side there Bella, just a tortured soul. I think the summary was that some confidence trickster called Sawyer tricked his parents in 1976, who then killed themselves. He wrote that "I'll find you" letter to Sawyer, but ended up growing up to be just like Sawyer, so as he never found the real Sawyer, he called himself Sawyer and wanted himself tortured and punished as a proxy. So who is he? How did he get a false passport to travel, or is his passport in another (his real) name? Did he officially change his name to Sawyer? Hmm, questions questions.
I don't think he's a very nice man, but I would have given it some right welly in that kiss - especially seeing he had his hands tied....

Bonsai 28-09-2005, 09:22 AM Im a bit confused with episodes as i dont watch the E4 one, but last Wednesdays one i missed most of it. We had a guest around, and although i tried to watch, i couldnt as he was chatting and making smart alec remarks all the way through.
It was Sawyers story. I havent seen anywhere here that gives a recap - so could anyone help ?
sayangmouse 28-09-2005, 01:19 PM Best I can figure out Bon (a bit of a repeat from above, but I'll try make it clearer):
- we see Sawyer in bed with a woman. He jumps up, says he's late for a meeting, grabs a suitcase, and 100,000 dollars falls out, and he goes oops.
- she says "oi, whats going on", and he explains its a goverment oil well selling scheme where you get to triple your money in 4 days, but he's got to meet his partner as they need 200,000 and he's short (numbers not exact here)
- she says "well, hang on, my husband can do that for you..."
- cue meeting with her husband and wife (looked like he worked in a car shop with the woman and was having affair, hubby didn't know of course)
- Sawyer plays doubtful, but sucks the guy in, who gives him the money
- its all a con of course, but just as Sawyer is about to head off with the money, he sees a little 7 year old kid, then gets upset, throws the money back and says hte deal is off
- cue back on beach, where the letter Sawyer carries around is noted to be written in 1976, ie HE wrote it as a kid
- the letter, if we remember, was written TO Sawyer, along he lines of "I'll grow up and find you for killing my parents"
- so I think we now figure out that his name isn't Sawyer at all, rather he adopted the name Sawyer to go looking for the confidence trickster who killed his parents
- so I think the Sawyer we see on the program also grew up to be a confidence trickster, has now called himself Sawyer after the person who killed his parents, and now punishes himself as a proxy for the real Sawyer who he never found
(he left the money because he saw a kid like himself and realised who he had become, ie just like hte man responsible for his parents death...so he fled...maybe called himself Sawyer afterwards...maybe started hating and hurting himself then)
- we also saw him operating with some shady, violent characters who looked like they may have put up the 100,000 on Sawyer's side, so he might be fleeing from them or somethign like that, we don't know yet
- we also don't know his real name, whether he ever found the real Sawyer (maybe tracked to Australia?), why he became a con man, why he really called himself Sawyer...maybe it IS Sawyer (??) and it was an older family member (??)
- so we need a part two to figure it out
hope that helps (??) - but its complicated
Bonsai 28-09-2005, 01:22 PM Thats fantastic - thank you very much
Aondeag 29-09-2005, 09:56 AM Did'nt his father kill his mother too...
and was'nt he hiding under the bed or something?
Now I might have gotten that totally wrong, but I think little boy Sawyer saw his father kill his mother in out of despair...when the con man tricked them out of everything.
I thought it was a fantastic story...but ever so sad.
Critique 29-09-2005, 11:32 AM I've seen all of series 1, read the above and I'm still confused
Aondeag 29-09-2005, 12:30 PM oooh me too.
I have soooooooooooooooooo many questions...
it's funny tho:I find that when i discuss it with people, they always mention something that I had'nt noticed...or say something like..'do you remember when so-and-say' said this...etc'.Something harmless which later turns out to be VERY relevant.
Love this show.

I know what you mean. Although I watched them all on DVD back to back, I am still following it on Channel 4 each week and it's surprising how many things I missed or didn't seem relevant at the time. I think you need to watch it twice at least to pick up all the details.
