View Full Version : Do you play?
tonee 24-09-2005, 01:24 PM Do you play an instrument? What? Music style?
Did you leave behind music/instruments when you were younger?
Are you interested in learning to play?
Me: I used to be able to read music, now I no longer remember.
I studied the cello, love to listen to the cello, can no longer play but I am thinking of taking up lessons again. Seems like a very hard task though.
Played the guitar a bit but got bored with my boring playing.
Tried the bhodrain but just made a lot of noise. I love drumming though and play around with the idea of playing - the dhol is fantastic to listen to if it is played well.
Bonsai 24-09-2005, 04:23 PM I used to be able to read music, and i learn to play the organ when i was in my teens - but now i wouldnt have a clue. I dont really have a desire to play a musical instrument .... although the drums often look kinda fun
msgirl 24-09-2005, 04:54 PM I was in Choir singing from middle school through high school and was able to read music but it's gone by the wayside. I really am dying to learn the guitar. My husband started to take lessons then flaked out but I keep telling myself I will, I will, I will. My husband took piano as a child and can play some lovely things but WON'T do it b/c I guess he hated the lessons and maybe was traumitized???? I think piano music is so beautiful!!
tonee 24-09-2005, 05:42 PM I forgot I sang in a choir and we sang backing vocals to Boney M and that group "Save your kisses for me" whoever they are!!!I think I was a pretentious git in the choir though so I dont opt to return to that!!

Brotherhood of man?? Respect. A great Eurovision song.
I'm completley tone deaf and have attempted the recorder and the piano but feel sure I was pretty awful at both.

Yep.Respect is not a word I would use. I should audition for the x factor but I seem to be very aware that I cant sing so that would stop me!!
Coastie 24-09-2005, 07:15 PM I play a bit of guitar...
Love doing a bit of percussion....
Can hold a tune but the furthest I would ever get is boot camp....if there...
I tend to write songs but am pants at writing the music/cords to go with them. I have a friend that helps me iwth that.
I will pretty much write, sing and play anything as I enjoy all kinds of music in some form or another.

Fee For All 24-09-2005, 07:34 PM My piano lessons were cut short at an early age when the local piano teacher turned out to be, well, let's just say it wasn't a conductor's baton he was sticking into our backs when we were playing
Anyway, I inherited a piano a couple of years ago and I WILL take it up again. When I have time.
It's fun to have in the house though.

Dirty Old Town
By Ewan McColl
I met my love by the gas works wall
Dreamed a dream by the old canal
Kissed a girl by the factory wall
Dirty old town
Dirty old town
Clouds a drifting across the moon
Cats a prowling on their beat
Spring's a girl in the street at night
Dirty old town
Dirty old town
Heard a siren from the docks
Saw a train set the night on fire
Smelled the spring on the smoky wind
Dirty old town
Dirty old town
I'm going to make me a good sharp axe
Shining steel tempered in the fire
Will chop you down like an old dead tree

Andrea 24-09-2005, 07:56 PM I learnt to play the piano when I was younger, but lessons stopped when my dad swapped the piano for an organ, so consequently I can only play right hand on the piano.
I then taught myself to play the organ and can play some chords, can read music and can play a mean "Roll out the barrel" :whistling
I would love to have a piano in the house and learn how to play with my left hand as well, and it would be great for the kids.
My Dad has a baby grand piano in his place and the kids love tinkling on that.

I have no recall of lyrics but after a couple of pints of guinness this song sounds great/
At school I played the clarinet and flute and was also in the choir, but then I discovered boys, fags and makeup and it all went downhill........
I would love to be able to play the guitar though!
I can play the piano.
Got to about grade 6 then left cos I was getting bored of the lessons. At that time I had enough skills to just fiddle about with the piano myself and play certain songs.
I also used to play the organ in chapel sometimes but one day my playing was abysmal and I made so many mistakes that I didn't do it again. Very embarassing.
Not touched a piano for ages though so i think i would be a little rusty now!
I would love to be able to play an instrument but I am not musical at all
Aondeag 27-09-2005, 09:45 AM I was lucky in that our national school was very musical and encouraged music.
I learnt so many songs and ballads when i was likkle..
I learnt piano for 5 years in secondary school, and our school used to enter competitions and stuff the whole time.T'was great craic, even tho' we hardly ever won.
I play the piano, the fiddle, and the bodhran.I love to sing, but never aloud in public. But I LOVE a sing song.....(not karaoke) but a proper seisiun!
Woo hoo!
'Rise up your skirts' and all that.....
JakeyBoy 27-09-2005, 05:55 PM I play the bass guitar at school. I wanted electric but nooooo they had to give it to the most boring person ever that if he was in a rock band god knows what would happen! :ranting:
I would so love to play an instrument ... I am in the local choir, but cannot hold a solo tune and take great comfort from my fellow soprano's.
I can play the 'odd' tune on the piano - but that is by rote more than playing to music - which baffles me even whilst singing.
My youngest has violin lessons and he loves it, although presently hopeless he and and the rest of the family hopes he improves. Mr F plays the bagpipes - badly and I make him play in the garden - it is really bad. And the eldest had guitar lessons a while back.
Coastie I can bear witness to your beautiful singing voice - you sang to me once in Edinburgh - I was not only touched but mightily impressed ... boot camp my lovely backside?? No my dear the final!!!

I would love to be able to play the bagpipes. In fact I give myself a new years resolution every year that I will learn to play them. 2006 will definately be the year...

Hello tonne,
Your're never to old to learn to play an instrument or to start again.
I as a teenager was very fond of playing the guitar, I wasn't to bad either a bit like Eva Cassidy/john Denver, for finger picking however, I did learn to play classical guitar . I haven't forgotten how to play and still do and I have done so for 33 years. My parents were advised when I was a child that I should be taught how to play the piano as I had a serious leaning towards writing music at the age of 7.
Unfortunately, my parents were not wealthy enough to pay for classes and I was 18 before I had any piano lessons at college. A few years ago I took up the piano again and went in the opposite direction to my classical training by completing a course in JAzz and Blues playing.
With reference to drumming I am going to record a traditional American Indian folk song with a group of traditional drummers soon.Just voice and drums with atmospheric sounds to be added at a later date.
You never forget what you've learnt musically but you can become shall we say more hesitant as a result of the lack of practice. If I were you I'd take up playing again.
Have fun.

Blink 03-10-2005, 11:18 AM God! That is alot of instruments!Yes. Unfortunately results in a rather cluttered house...
I play one of those! :smartie: I love it!They're great, aren't they? So expressive. Have you ever played with a troupe of drummers, Coastie? For a while I was going along to a group that played African rhythms, and there would typically be around 10 people playing at once: a doun-doun player or two, bells, timbales, congas, several djembes and one or two soloists. Fabulous.
tonee 03-10-2005, 07:03 PM Yes. Unfortunately results in a rather cluttered house...

I dont know what it is about drumming but it just feels so great to be around drummers and the sounds. Primal.
