View Full Version : The chronicles of Narnia.
secrets 29-09-2005, 12:21 AM C.S.Lewis was the writer of these much loved tales.
And christmas this year see's the release of 'The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe' by Walt Disney.
Arguably one of his most famous stories.
Some of you may not have heard of either the author or the books, and those of you that have may have children who have not.
But whether you wish to re-visit those childhood memories, or introduce your family to that magical world that is Narnia, this promises to be a good un!
You can get a taste of it from this trailer, just click on your connection speed, top right, and see for yourselves.:D

Fee For All 29-09-2005, 09:22 AM Think I'll be giving this one a miss secrets!
I loathed these books as a child - I did pick 'em up again as an adult, but failed to get past the first couple of chapters.
Those ghastly children!
Aondeag 29-09-2005, 09:47 AM OH I LOVED this as a kid.I still do.
I did'nt know there was a walt disney or anything version.
:-O
Is it a cartoon...or real?
OH I'm pretty excited about this.
yay.
secrets 29-09-2005, 09:07 PM It's not a cartoon Aondeag.
It is very similar to 'The Lord of the Rings' trilogy of films, with real characters and special effects. :D
Aondeag 30-09-2005, 02:39 PM It sounds fab.Despite never having seen or read 'Lord of the Rings', I think I will enjoy this.
Looking forward to getting my mitts on it.
:-)
Aondeag 11-10-2005, 12:57 PM 6th of December is the release date.
Brill...

I do kind of agree with Fee, although I loved the story as a child and got the tape and the book for Katie. Now, reading and hearing from an adult's side, my views have changed. The children were ghastly and spoilt and Edwin or whatever he is called got what he deserved!
karenh 11-10-2005, 06:13 PM I'm with Fee and Bella here too. I hated "The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe", even as a kid. I think its probably the only classic childrens book that I never enjoyed and I'm not sure I even finished the book.
I can't really remember the story now - only vague details of it - but I remember feeling quite strongly that it wasn't enjoyable. As a result, I've never been tempted to give it another try.
However, if the film proves to be popular I might give it a watch. I'm a sucker for hype, and if everyone raves about it I'm sure I'll go see it. The film might just change my mind.
secrets 11-10-2005, 06:21 PM The great thing about this book is the masterful way it was written.
Stirring the emotions is something that all writers of any standing aim to do.
To get involved with the characters so much that you either love or hate them draws you in and gets you involved.
I just have a feeling that this will be very very good and well worth a watch.
Not having read or got involved before will not make one iota of difference to your enjoyment.

No, I sure it wouldn't.
I'd never read The Lord of the Rings either yet I loved the films. in fact, I think the fact that I'd never read the books made me enjoy the films even more. Most people I know who had read the books seemed to focus more on the differences between the films and the books than the actual films themselves!
Coastie 11-10-2005, 07:37 PM I loved the books as a kid...still have them all in fact...I just pray that Hollywood has kept the story as true to the book as possible....the BBC series a few years back was fab but I fear that Hollywood and all the PCness of the world will push out the Christian message within the story in favour of more drama and magic...
I wait in anticipation for what could be a cracking movie....if they stay true to the book!
Now what were the seven books again?
The Silver Chair
The Horse and His Boy
The Last Battle
The Voyage of the Dawn Treader
The Lion the Witch and The Wardrobe
The Magicians Nephew
and
and
and the one I always forget!
Bella 11-10-2005, 08:16 PM No, I sure it wouldn't.

I loved The Hobbit and have read this book a dozen times. Mr B got me The Lord of The Rings trilogy and I tried really hard to get into it but just couldn't. I read most of the first book but I just got bogged down, plus it was a really heavy book, I ended up with carpal tunnel!! But like Karen, I loved the films and would watch them again and again.
And let's remember it's Disney who are remaking this, they often have the habit of chaning the facts!
Aondeag 22-11-2005, 02:50 PM Hurray..not long now to 'Narnia.'..early December.
Yay...
Hope they do a good job of it,
Patsy 22-11-2005, 03:06 PM The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe is the only book I can remember getting out of the library time and time again. I really want to see it. The trailers look amazing.
Bella 22-11-2005, 05:20 PM I agree Patsy, the trailers do look amazing. I may just take the girls to see this one instead of Harry Potter as I am getting huge amounts of grief about not taking the eldest to see this!
Might do that on the run-up to Christmas - we went last year to see Polar Express on the 23rd and it was just fab!
Aondeag 30-11-2005, 12:58 PM Yeah..preview of this next tuesday....
free for mothers n' childrens............
anyone got a small child I can borrow for a couple of hours,
am willing to pay 5 euro per hour..
Simply can't wait.
secrets 04-12-2005, 10:06 PM Just payed for the eight of us to see this on saturday - and i'm looking forward to it immensley.:)
secrets 11-12-2005, 06:38 AM Fabulous film.
In the end nine of us went.
Hazel had never read the book so had no idea of the plot, some of us were big fans, and some of us had only a vague idea, but all enjoyed the film.
It did follow the original in nearly every respect, and the animation was superb.
We went to see Polar Express last year and this was much more enjoyable.
Do give it a try if you can.
Dolores 11-12-2005, 09:33 AM The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe is the only book I can remember getting out of the library time and time again. I really want to see it. The trailers look amazing.
snap!
it became a family joke that every time I went to the library I'd get this book out.
It mesmerised me completely.
I didn't care how snotty the kids were or how there was a "christian message" in there ... I just loved the lion and the witch, the turkish delight, the snow melting, Maguire the Chief of Police ..... can't wait to see it all in action .. the trailers I've seen are EXACTLY how I would have pictured it in my head.
I'm going to see this this afternoon if we can get in.
secrets 11-12-2005, 05:06 PM Go Dol the actors in this are superb - not sure who plays the witch - but she deserves an oscar - it's really good - did i say that before?:pimp:
Dolores 11-12-2005, 06:49 PM It did follow the original in nearly every respect, and the animation was superb.
I felt it was very faithful to the book, often to the detriment of the film tbh. It was over long and very slow to start. When they finally came, the battle scenes were marvellous, but they were a tad too little a tad too late imo.
It is a fine effort, but I felt let down by it as it plodded in parts. I can't see it being in my top 50 films.
Have to say that Ray Winstone's Mr Beaver was the comic highlight!
I'd never read the book or watched the tv series as a child so I didn't really know what this was about but I went with miss PJ to see it tonight and I was impressed. I enjoyed it very much.
I think Miss PJ, being a die-hard fan of the tv series when she was little, enjoyed it on many more levels than me, though so I think it helps if you were a previous fan of this.
Nevertheless, a very good film.
Aondeag 12-12-2005, 09:33 AM I LOVED this....I LOVED it sooo much.
I think CS Lewis would like it too...even the kids were a pain in the butt...just like in the stories.
But it was lovely.........
I could not praise this enough.
ANd there was a tv series? Years ago?
:-(
I did'nt know that.
That would have been good.

Yes, in the late 80s.
As I said, I never watched it but Miss PJ did. She said the movie is 100x better though (obviously because of the special effects etc).
Aondeag 12-12-2005, 12:02 PM I did'nt like the beavers too much...
like..they were lovely and brave and fatithful...but yer man's voice did'nt suit Narnia. It was not magical enough for Narnia.
But they were terrific beavers...and in the battle scene mr beaver was wearing his chain mail battle gear. Brilliant or what!
I don't believe it was all done by animation....it was real...
ALL real...
Narnia is out there!
yay!

Btw, that was Ray Winstone and Dawn French doing the beavers' voices.
Aondeag 14-12-2005, 12:52 PM Oh right...I quite like dawn french....never heard of the other fella though.
Aslan's voice was just spot on........all wise and kind of mysterious and all knowing....
Think I will trek along to see this movie again tomorrow nite.......
msgirl 17-12-2005, 08:05 PM Msboy #1 loved the film! He went with some of his friends and girlfriend the other night. I think I may see it to say I have. I read the book(s) AGES ago but don't really have too many memories of it....I must have not been too facinated w/them??:book:
kookycat 22-12-2005, 07:17 PM special effect good? i thought they were pants!! not the lion and that but certain bits where you can see outlines and fake bits. mustve spent too much on the lion! my thoughts - its a children's film, children would love it, adults would be bored. and mr thumnuss creeps me out, hes like a dirty old man, doncha think?
JakeyBoy 29-12-2005, 04:38 PM This movie went for sooo long and it really was too much for me to handle!
Bella 29-12-2005, 10:08 PM I took Katie to see this on Friday and we loved it! She got a bit upset when Aslan got killed, so I had to tell her that he came back to life. Despite me not liking the book all that much, I really enjoyed the film and thought the special effects were good. Aon - I loved the beavers, maybe it was because of who they were (Ray Winstone & Dawn French) and thought it hilarous when we saw then decked out in their chainmail. The girl Tilda ? was great as the Snow Queen, she was really evil and played the part really well.

Tilda Swinton - I remember her from way back in "Your Cheatin' Heart" on TV
Aondeag 09-01-2006, 12:57 PM She was great as the snow queen...boo...really evil and even her movements were very creepy and ethereal.Would not fancy meeting her in her war chariot at the end of a dark alleyway!!!!!
I saw this again over Christmas...and i loved it the second time around as well.
I LOVED the books as a kid and I was just so happy to see it on screen.
I don't care about special effects or the like...I just wanted to walk through the wardrobe into Narnia and I did.
