Fee For All 08-10-2005, 09:46 PM ...is on Parkie.
God, he's pants. He reminds me of 70s disaster called Dan Fogelberg.
Does anyone else not get him?
Critique 09-10-2005, 12:15 AM Me Fee :bored: My friend was raving about him so I downloaded all his album and thought it was all pants too!
JakeyBoy 09-10-2005, 01:08 AM Who is this guy?
Coastie 09-10-2005, 07:09 AM I didn't know who he was from Adam until I saw an advert for the Acuostic Love album....it has his 'Beautiful' song on. I like that one but don't feel I could listen to a whole album of his voice.
He is music to top yourself to.
That said I do like Beautiful, but I think he may have peaked with that one.
I don't get him either Fee

I downloaded it too. About 3 of the songs are good but the rest are crap.
Bonsai 10-10-2005, 10:26 AM I like his song 'beautiful' and also his latest single - the name of which i cant recall
I dont think i could listen to him for long, but i like him. His voice is different, and his music (the two i like and have heard) is catchy. I wont be buying his album, but if his songs are on a compilation i would listen to them gladly.
Aondeag 10-10-2005, 11:59 AM me neither..don't get him at all..
and i dont' get people getting him.

He's not a fan of his music.
Fee For All 13-10-2005, 07:11 PM Mr H is not alone. Apparently he was known as c**ty blunty in the army
He's profiled in Q this month (not MrH, unless there's something karen is keeping quiet about) and sounds a proper tosser.

Wow... it took me a while but I've found some who don't like him! YAY!
They used to play it at work and everyone seemed to like the song, (you're beautiful), and yes, the song and lyrics are good, but his voice is horrendous in my opinion. I can just about put up with it , but I don't think I want to listen to anything else of his...

laa laa laa la la :p
Bella 17-10-2005, 07:44 PM I thought Beautiful was ok but I don't think if I was his current girlfriend I would have been too happy about him writing and singing a song about his previous girlfriend.
His recent one is just similar to Beautiful though.
Give me Freddy Mercury anyday! :w00t:
JakeyBoy 01-12-2005, 04:17 AM I finally found out who this guy is! He was right under my nose the whole time! "You're Beautiful" is on my iPod Nano and on the radio all the time. I just didn't know who he was at the time. Silly me:wallbash:
Islandman 01-12-2005, 08:29 PM I never heard of James Blunt before I came over here...but I think he's brilliant. I have loved every single song I have heard of his so far...and it's rare for me to like that much of the same artist. "You're beautiful" has to be my favorite...as well as his latest one...about my friend, my lover or something to that effect...
Aondeag 02-12-2005, 12:16 PM Probably about himself!
I bough the "Back to Bedlam" album (in fact I'm listening to it now). I quite like it!

Have to agree on the sexy part Bridge, but, as others have said, I like 'Beautiful' but don't think I could listen to a whole album of his stuff.
as well as his latest one...about my friend, my lover or something to that effect...
That will be "Goodbye my lover" - a very sad but lovely song.

Hello Fee for all,
I think his music is somewhat reminiscent of several folk artists who existed in the flower power era of the late 1960's and early 70's. There is nothing particularly wrong with it, it is relaxing to listen too. But because the mood in the background is not variable in theme you may find yourself falling asleep.
Folk music can be an acquired taste, especially that which employs atmospheric sound. For example; its not everyone who would like Enya.
The songs are obviously written from experience, and as a result of the last 20years of the charts sounding very much of dance mix, indie, hip hop, rap and with very little else, it could be that James Blunt will start some kind of modern folk revival.
Good luck to him, lets just see how he goes, will he sell records by the million and become a commercial entity or will become a non entity in a year or so's time. Time will tell.

Aondeag 14-12-2005, 02:43 PM Hi Maureen...ooh would you really class Enya as Folk?
Isn't she a bit too wishy washy and boring for that?
I quite like folk..but DECENT stuff...
Ewan McColl and Luke and all that...there are some beautiful songs out there that are folk but are loved by everyone.
I personally don't think james blunt has a style..it's just him with great lyrics and a wibbly wobbly voice, which does nothing for me.
It's like he is imating someONE..and doesn't have a style of his own.I'd quite like to hear someone else interpret his songs tho', as I quite like the lyrics....

Hello Aondeag
Mary O'hara a very dated comparative would probably have been designated as a folk artist and maybe even wishy washy. Likewise, the same goes for Enya. There's a reason for this the quality of the voice is pure and has very little in terms of real strength or power to say knock you out or break glass. There is a minimal natural vibrato or tremolo in this type of voice some would say even a bit Charlotte church like, when she was a teen. It's an admirable quality if it remains untouched by vocal abuses or excessive training.
I know this might sound weird but some voices that start pure and then have excessive training - age, and sometimes the ageing of this voice is just not sweet to the ears. With the exception of Charlotte Church the singers mentioned have maintained very young voices. (Singing on the soft or open edge its known as).
However, the wishy washy characteristic can also be created by excessive echo and high frequency settings in the recording studio for the aura that you can almost feel. The finished product being almost atmospeheric.
Not all folk music is raw or raucous. Some of it, is no less decent than that which makes you want to sing, or stamp your feet, get up and do a jig etc, and is often very beautiful. I'm thinking here of the many ballad type, Irish, Scottish and Welsh tunes I have come across over the years.
The folk music that became popular at the latter end of 60's decade and at the beginning of the early 70's, was in actual fact crossed with several other idioms of popular sounds of the day, and sadly I do think the added illegal non pharmaceutical products, may well have enhanced the sound of the era even further.
Of James Blunt given time he may develop a style of his own. I personally prefer the distinctive sounds of say Jerry Rafferty.

Gerry Rafferty is brilliant - he did some good stuff with Stealers Wheel and his "Can I Have My Money Back?" album is superb! - I've still got it on vinyl - must see if I can get it on CD!!

Fee For All 19-12-2005, 11:06 PM D'you remember when he joined Bily Connelly in The Humblebums? Before the big yin's patter took centre stage?
I wasn't that keen on Stealer's Wheel, but the beginning of Baker Street sends shivers down my spine every time I hear it!

Hello Rob and Isis,
Just gone to get my Gerry Rafferty disc out, to do some original date checking.
Baker street which Gerry wrote came out in 1978, and everything he ever did was his own material. When you consider the fact that he was a busker on the London underground, the fact that he was a brilliant guitarist and had a potential measurable in good quality music for his era, when disco was king.
This man was a genius, and you know I'm not ashamed to admit my age - I'm 43 and like many of my year appreciate good quality music. Irregardless of whether its pop, soul, jazz, blues, rock, rock ballad, anthem, folk tune -classical choral indeed anything. But the sound quality says it all.
Of James Blunt I think I'd need to hear another 2 discs of him at intervals of say 18 months apart just to see how he develops.

Northern angel 20-12-2005, 12:09 AM Hello aondeag,
Just wanted to add, not all those wonderful artists from the flower power era were on drugs and folk music at its roots is clean.
Also some of our American cousins were prolific in this period I'm thinking of Tom Paxton here who at more than one folk festival upstaged Bob Dylan much to his annoyance and contempt.
I gather it doesn't take much to upstage Bob Dylan, he probably doesn't like Newcastle for that reason.

Hello Rob,
Have you thought about trying out one of the firms that re-record your cassette or vinyl onto CD.
If you can't buy it already that may be another option.

Aondeag 20-12-2005, 12:17 PM Ah poor old BOB...I've seen him play and I have never had a complaint about him.He gets bad press for being a grumpy old fekker....himself and van morrison both. But I have enjoyed him everytime I have seen him play.Sometimes he has great rapport with the audience, especially in the smaller venues.Sometimes he just plays and off he goes.
Wasn't it the Clancy Brothers, or someone like that who he used to gig around with in the beginning.....way back when! ??
Fee For All 20-12-2005, 02:02 PM Was that at Ballydehob, Aondeag? That you saw him?
(We are talking about Dylan here aren't we? )
Aondeag 20-12-2005, 02:39 PM er...no....
it was kilkenny...and dublin ...TWICE.
But he played with the Clancy's waaaaay back when, he used to support them when they were young fellas...in the States.Apparently he does a mean sea shanty.........
(don't we all!):D
Fee For All 20-12-2005, 04:04 PM We saw him down Ballydehob way once. He was having one of his 'quiet' nights

You've hit the proverbial on the whatsit, there my lovely. Do you remember Maria doing "Beautiful" on the X Factor? I liked her version much better than his. It's definitely his voice I don't like, not his songs as such.
Well done, you clever eleven you!

Hello Aondeag,
I think he has worked with the clancy brothers but he had his own band aswell. The travelling Willberries, or a name something similar to that, in the days when he crossed to being more pop orientated. I personally think he was a very good live artist having also seen him perform, but he has obviously had a number of run ins with theatre managers and this gets reported in the press.
The major disadvantage for those in search of fame is that every sector of your private life becomes public knowledge and you become public property.
Which is a shame really, as I would have hoped that some level of respect could been attained in the years of media reporting on those in entertainment that some areas of there lives would have stayed private.
