View Full Version : Q.I. - Friday evenings, BBC2.
Pandora 10-10-2005, 03:26 PM Please, please, please tell me there are folks out there in forumland that watch this totally superb programme.
Its on, on a Friday evening, BBC2 about 10pm and is hosted by Stephen Fry. The name of the show is Q.I. which stands for Quite Interesting.
Its a quiz show, with Fry chairing and Alan Davis as the regular guest and another three comedians making up the rest of the teams. Its a combination of general knowledge questions and comedy but it has to be seen to be believed - mainly because of the sheer brilliance of Stephen Fry.
Its rare that you laugh out loud at TV shows these days (apart from Eastenders, obviously), but on Friday night, Mr P and I were in fits ! Forget the bloody questions, forget the teams, just give Mr Stephen Fry one of those "audience with..." shows and let him off the leash.
The man is witty, charming, screechingly funny, a brilliant raconteur, a mimic second to none (his bewildering variety of scots accents on friday night were a pleasure to behold), and an obviously incredibly knowledgeable man - all served up on a platter for our delight, without a whiff of ego or arrogance.
If I were Queen, Id make him a Knight !!
Ill shurrup now and get me coat....
Patsy 10-10-2005, 03:49 PM I've loved this programme long time, Pan. I used to watch it on a Friday night on BBC1 or 2 and then switch over to BBC3 or 4 or whatever to catch the next week's. Trouble was, I then had to wait 2 weeks to see it again. And now I watch the re-runs and everything.
mikado 10-10-2005, 03:50 PM Yep, great programme :)
Pandora 10-10-2005, 05:13 PM Oh goody goody... more fans

Dolores 11-10-2005, 05:37 PM Sorry to say but I REALLY REALLY CAN'T STAND THAT SMUG BASTERD STEPHEN FRY!!! COULD HE BE ANY SMUGGER?! NO HE COULDN'T!
phew! that felt good.
Also don't like Alan Davies who is an irritating herbert although not as smug as Stephen Fry ... cos that is IMPOSSIBLE!!! NO-ONE COULD BE SMUGGER!
Bonsai 12-10-2005, 08:39 AM Lol Dol :w00t:
I watched this last night on Sky. I was channel flicking, and came across it. It was ok - but a little too high brow for 11pm on a week day evening for me.
Eternity 12-10-2005, 10:27 AM I think SF has every reason to be smug, much more so than your average Joe. He is one very clever man http://www.mgnet.karoo.net/stars/stevefry.htm loathe him or love him, he is very talented.
He can stay forever so long as he keeps Johnathan Woss out of the prog! :w00t:

I thought you were talking about OUR SF on this forum then :w00t: Durrrr, i need a break i think :bag:
Dolores 12-10-2005, 10:33 AM i disagree Eternity. Being clever doesn't make you not allowed to be smug!
he is a smug git by anyone's standards .. that he is a clever smug git is neither here nor there as far as I'm concerned. In fact if he wasn't clever he wouldn't be smug he'd just be a complete prat!
Eternity 12-10-2005, 10:35 AM Each to their own Dol - I admit to liking the guy, and you admit to not.
That's life!

Oh Dolly Woddle Doodle. How could you. Im distraught. And he always speaks so highly of you....
PS. There actually IS someone more smug. Robbie Williams (shudder).

Yes, but Robbie doesn't really have the talent or intellegence that SF has - he is very one-dimensional. Just heard his new song on the radio, just like a few on the others he has churned out recently. Liked his early stuff but now he is getting boring and desperate...........and oh yes, smug!
With regards Stephen Fry, I think his smugness probably comes across wrongly, he is extremely shy and very insecure - a lot of actors are. In fact re the above Robbie Williams, he comes across all bolshy and a complete dim-wit most of the time but I do think there is a lot of insecurity there too, so maybe his reason for being smug too.
I haven't watched this programme, or dare I say it heard of it but I may give it a look in as Friday nights are usually crap - won't be for a few weeks though as I have a mum's night out this Friday and I will probably be in some bar in a City called Dublin the following Friday!

ah along with smugness I would also rate being shy and insecure as two of the other traits which I dislike in a person! ...and all these actors who say they are "shy" ... well it just doesn't wash with me I'm afraid!
Bella 12-10-2005, 08:06 PM I'm shy.......
Eternity 12-10-2005, 09:19 PM I'm shy.......
........and I'm Bashful with a touch of Dopey :wink2:
IsLe Of WeAtHeR 13-10-2005, 08:32 AM Its not smugness you are detecting it is insecurity on your own part masking its self as hostility. By accusing SF of smugness you make your self feel better for not being as clever.
:smartie:

OOOhhhh below the belt :ninja:
Pandora 15-10-2005, 05:14 PM This was good again last night. For once the idiotic Alan Davis was stumped for something to say and just looked on, bemused.
Rory McGrath was equal to Stephen Fry and it was so funny to see them competing.
Scary thing is though - why is Jimmy Carr starting to look more and more like a ventriloquist dummy? He frightens me !
mikado 17-10-2005, 10:20 AM It was a bit of a smugfest really, with Stephen Fry, Alan Davies, Rory McGrath and Jimmy Carr all in one room together :)
I was stunned at how clever Rory McGrath was. Had he been reading the questions beforehand???

Whilst Rory is no fool he does have a reputation for COLD BLOODED CHEATING.....Think back to They Think It's All Over....It was discovered that he regularly bribed the production staff to get the answers.
(back to the subject)
Didn't see it but do watch it
mikado 17-10-2005, 01:16 PM Yep, that was what I was thinking of ;)
karenh 17-10-2005, 03:38 PM I think this show is fabulous.
I don't always watch it because I'm not always around, but when I am you can bet its on the box.
And I don't think Stephen Fry is at all smug either! I'd agree if you said he was pompous - he's very posh and articulate, which makes him seem a bit haughty, but I wouldn't agree that he is smug.

REALLY???? :shocking:  The bearded, cheating git.
Well there was me putting it down to his Cambridge University education...
I must say his knowledge of birds was verging on anorakdom.
Loved it when Stephen Fry said, after Rory answered yet another question correctly, "you're just starting to try my patience now..."
Apart from Jimmy Carr turning into a puppet from Thunderbirds and looking scary - did anyone notice how incredibly adenoidal Rory McGrath was? He didnt have a cold but god almighty, sort your nasal passages out man !!!!
